William M. Robinson
CHESTER--Retired Army Col. William Matthew Robinson, 81, of Chester, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Bon Secours Retirement Community, Chesterfield County. A native of Berryville, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Mary Hardesty Robinson, and was predeceased by a brother, Austin Robinson.
Col. Robinson retired after 31 years in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II, with service in the North African and Indian Theaters. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. He was also retired from the Prudential Insurance Co., Petersburg, and was former owner of Robinson's Grocery Store. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Petersburg, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at the University of Richmond, and was past president of the Petersburg Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mercedes F. Robinson; son and daughter-in-law, William Randolph and Lynne R. Robinson, and two grandchildren, William Cameron and Sarah Randolph Robinson, all of Chesapeake; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Louise and Horace Sutton of Newport News; brother and sister-in-law, Hardesty Harold and Lila Robinson of Vero Beach, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; five stepchildren, David G. Filippi and wife, Emily, Robert H. Filippi, Linda Susan Filippi and husband, John Heckel, Patrice Sevilla Anderson and husband, Barry, and Mark A. Filippi; step-grandchildren, Lisa and Michael Filippi, Joshua and Geoffrey Filippi, Jennifer Anderson and Erich and Alison Heckel.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. The Rev. Dr. Dean Frazeur will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home.
