AUGUST 11, 1923 - MARCH 31, 2016
     Philip William Barnhart of Arlington, VA went to be with the Lord on March 31, 2016 at the age of 92. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 70 years, Ellen. They have two children, P. William, Jr. (Lyda) and David (Jo Anne), three grandchildren: Jane Leckert (James), William (Janine) and Niles, and four great-grandchildren: Madelyn, Nicholas, Alana and Henry. He leaves behind a sister, Anne Lawrence, other family and many friends.
     Phil was born in Staunton, VA to Abraham Philip and Emma Virginia Barnhart (both deceased) and was raised in Winchester, VA. He was proud to serve his country during WWII as a P-51 pilot in the 354 Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force stationed in England. After the war, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee and his graduate degree at Cornell.
     Phil began his long career in electrical engineering at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory (White Oak, MD) and, after several other jobs, completed it at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He had a wide-ranging career including work with space satellites and medical devices, and he held several patents.
     A memorial service will be held on April 16, 2016 at 11 AM at the Church of the Covenant, 2666 Military Road, Arlington, VA 22207. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Church of the Covenant.
