Stella Ruth Settle, 85, formerly of Melbourne, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at the Villa del Sol Nursing Home in Marshalltown after a lengthy illness.|
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 7 at the First Friends Church in Marshalltown with Rev. Phil King officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Quakerdale Home in New Providence or the Marshalltown First Friends Church.
Born April 18, 1917 north of Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Elwood E. and Estella G. Reed Packer. She graduated in 1935 from Marshalltown High School. After high school, she entered the Iowa Normal School in Cedar Falls and later taught at Taylor Township No. 4 in rural Marshall County for
She married Burnell R. Settle on June 4, 1938, where they resided and farmed in the Chester, Hartland and Bangor communities for several years. In 1955, Burnell and Stella Ruth moved to the Van Cleve
area. She worked as a homemaker, mother, and helped Burnell on the family farm for 40 years before the couple retired to Melbourne.|
Stella Ruth was a member of First Friends Church and a member of the former Van Cleve United Church of Christ where she was active in the choir and many church organizations and activities. In addition, she was active in Marshall County Farm Bureau, Marshall County Rural Women's Chorus, Gideon's International, Melbourne Fifties Plus Club, Republican Party, 4-H and Marshall County Red Cross Chapter.
She is survived by her three sons, Dean and his wife Harriet from Lincoln, NE; Don and his wife Phyllis living on the family farm near Van Cleve; and Paul from Minneapolis, MN. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnell, her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
