The Last Will & Testament of George McKay

See George's line of descent which begins in the Mackay Family Record

xxxxxIn the name of God Amen, on the twenty third day of December in the year of our Lord 1797, I George McKay in the county of Shenandoah & State of Virginia being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say that principally I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian and decent manner, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in manner and form following viz: And first my will and desire is, that my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied. In the 2d I give and bequeath to Mary McKay, my well beloved wife, one Negro man called Joe to be in her service during her natural life & to be disposed of according to her will and pleasure at any time in her life or at her death.

xxxxxItem. I give and bequeath to my beloved son William, one bay mare colt. My will and desire is that all my movable estate and everything that I own or possess of any kind whatsoever that is not bequeathed as aforesaid, be and remain in the hands of my beloved wife during her natural life to dispose of in all respects and at all time as her wisdom and discretion thinks most proper, that she may thereby be the better able to rais her little family, as if we were both living together, and at her decease what is left or found in her hands, to be equally divided amongst all my children and no difference made but male and female alike---

xxxxxThe above will or the greater part thereof being entered down from the testator's own mouth in his presence a few hours before his death by us the subscribers who were called upon by the testator to write the same but was not signed by him.

Witnesses:
