Wallace E. Shipp
Wallace Eugene Shipp of Broadway passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
Wally was a good man born in Washington, D.C. He went directly to serve in World War II after graduating from Western High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a combat vet. As a medic aboard the USS Callaway, Wally aided the Army and Marines in six invasions, including Iwo Jima.
At the end of WWII, Wally was honorably discharged with a Bronze Star for his actions under direct sniper fire. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton Hospital during the Korean War. He led the USS Callaway Veterans Organization for 48 years.
After graduating from Georgetown University, Wally continued his government career by joining the General Services Administration, specializing in building management. His work included two tours at the Pentagon and also tours as building manager/assistant building manager at Fort Meade, the Atomic Energy Commission and Department of Agriculture. He proudly retired with 43 years of government service.
Wally had many joys in his life, especially his loving marriage to Dorothy, Dot. He and his beloved wife were members of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., for over 70 years. Everyone who knew him saw him as a faithful man.
In 2003, they moved to Broadway, Va., to live on and care for Dots family farm. With all of Wallys accomplishments and time away from his family during his government duties, nothing made him happier than mowing and trimming their farm and watching his family grow.
Wally is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ritchie Shipp. They were approaching their 72nd anniversary at the time of his death. His joy was to see his son, Gene and wife, Karen; daughter, Donna; four grandchildren, Kim and husband, Ravi, Kelly and husband, Sean, Josh and wife, Jennifer, Dorothy, and five great-grandchildren, Jatin, Jonah, Sabrina, Elliot and Emilia working and playing together.
In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wally is survived by one brother, Ralph, and over 25 nieces and nephews.
Wallys family and all who knew him recognized his loving qualities and dedication to his work, family and friends. He was a good man during his 94 years, and is greatly missed.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 8, 2018, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, Va., at 2 p.m. Family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospice at 2000 Beery Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
