Ann Gardner
BETTENDORF - Ann Lindsay Gardner, 75, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, August 26, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, following a stroke on July 26.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 121 W. 12th Street, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport.
Ann was born in 1934 in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Ellen (Voorhies) Lindsay. She attended high school at the Madeira School in Fairfax, Va., and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
While at Northwestern, she met and married fellow NU student, John C. Gardner. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in March of this year.
Ann was an avid reader and liked to garden, sew, play tennis and follow the activities of her much loved family. She and her husband traveled extensively overseas. Ann was a talented cook and found special enjoyment in preparing dishes from foods found in village markets in the South of France, a favorite travel destination.
She was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Ann felt it a high honor to serve on the Altar Guild, and took great pride in maintaining clergy vestments and the altars. She was a faithful member of Hildegards, a church prayer group, and served a term on Trinity's vestry.
Ann was co-founder and active promoter of Positive Parenting at Trinity (PPAT), an independent pre-school day care center. PPAT is housed in space provided free by the cathedral in its Parish Hall. She served continuously in various capacities on the PPAT governing board and was fiercely supportive of its staff and programming. She was pleased at PPAT's statewide recognition for excellence in fostering early childhood development and loved visiting with the children.
Ann was a member of PEO Chapter IR. She served on the former board of the Visiting Nurses Association and was part of the negotiations with Genesis Medical Systems when VNA provided significant funding for construction of the Clarissa C. Cook hospice facility.
In addition to her husband, she leaves five children: daughters, Ellen Ingold, of Alto Pass, Ill., and Elizabeth Guyon, of Ogden, Utah; sons, Paul (Thea), of Davenport, John V., of Carbondale, Ill., and Matthew (Shallen), of Nashville, Tenn. She has nine grandchildren and six great-grandsons. Also surviving is her sister, Ellen Dern, of Ft. Collins, Colo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Positive Parenting at Trinity, 121 W. 12th St., Davenport, IA 52803 or to another preferred charity.
