The Daily Grist
Ground Out By "Dusty' Miller

THIS 'N THAT---Briefed for 18 minutes on foreign affairs and policy by the state department, Candidate Stevenson is now sufficiently intelligent on that matter to stump the country, and maybe write a book on it. . . . Dubious folks in and around Greenfield are whispering that those fellows who say they saw flying saucers were in their cups. . . . Patrolmen are halting over-weight vehicles on the road. But I got home from the Collett-McKay picnic without being stopped. . . . The five-column illustration of the N&W railway's ad has the cutline: "The man in the pinstripe suit used to wear overalls." My next step is a pinstripe suit. . . . The George Deweys, according to the Leesburg Citizen, have moved to London. That creek on the golf course George, crosses the fairways exactly where a golf ball insists on lighting---maybe not yours, but definitely mine. . . . Cleo Bean, Highlander, who has had more than four-score birthdays, has attended Wilmington Yearly Meeting of Friends since its origin in the early 90's. She writes about the buggies and carriages that in the early days completely filled the campus and all the adjacent streets. "I wonder how many horse-drawn vehicles were there this year?" she muses. If there were as many as one, Mrs. Bean, it would have been more of a feature attraction than anything on the program. . . . We called it "the loft"---the floored attic portion of the building across the porch from the weatherboarded log house in which I was born. Crowded into a corner where wasps and mud-daubers sting, stang and stung, everything, thang and thung, as scars testify to this late day, were the relics of my grandmother's earlier days. There were two spinning wheels, one with a big, flat wheel, the other with a smaller, grooved wheel. There was a wool-comber and a flax-beater. We boys played with these things on rainy days. They were left in the attic when the farm was sold---useless, worthless, outmoded carryovers from the days when grandma was young and carded wool and spun it into clothing---we thought!

Collett-McKay Families Meet For 87th Picnic

Members of the present generation of the Collett-McKay families were united once again when they gathered in large numbers at the picnic grounds near New Burlington, designed for the annual reunions and kept for that purpose by the families, for their 87th annual picnic Saturday.
Marking this historical setting where pioneers of the family settled, is a rail fence along the north side of the grounds, along a side road, which is in splendid repair, the walnut rails being more than 100 years old. The gateposts on the main road bear handsome bronze plates on which the history of the picnic and the families are sketched. A grove of magnificent young and stately old sugar maple trees shelter the green of this site, which has become a beautiful park, kept mowed by Mr. Howard Magee, and giving way on two sides to the forest primeval.
One of the regular attendants at the picnic, Mr. Howard Collett of Wilmington, said "This year more than ever before, we thought of those lines of Longfellow's 'Hiawatha,': 'We who love the haunts of nature, Love the shadow of the forest, Love the wind among the branches,'"
In this setting, it has become tradition for three 50-foot tables to be set up, on the second Saturday of August, on which the many delicious dishes taken from well-filled baskets can be arranged; and for a negro to arrive early to tend the fire and make the coffee in two large kettles. First, Hiram Poor attended 34 consecutive times in this capacity, and was followed by John Simpson, who assisted at the coffee making for the first time in 1888, and was present for the 72nd consecutive time this year.
Soon after the bountiful dinner was served, a rain storm interrupted the reunion many assembling in family groups at homes in the vicinity, including that of Mrs. Abbie Haydock. The registry of names was not completed when the storm interrupted the picnic and it is not known how many were present, although there were several from a distance.
