Collett-McKay Families Hold 83rd Picnic

On Saturday, August 14, fortune again smiled on the Collett-McKay family picnic, which convened for the 83rd time on the picnic grounds in Chester Township, which basked in the serene sunshine of an ideal summer day, with 230 relatives and friends, the same number as last year, registering.
"It was cool and pleasant the whole day and tradition says that it does not rain for the annual Collett-McKay picnics and the weather apparently obeys the dictate of tradition."
An imposing entrance with memorial plates on the gateway marks the grounds. Since the picnics have been held for many years, there is a table of photographs and curios, which create keen interest, on display. There are never any programs at the picnic, no election of officers, or selecting a date for meeting. The families assemble the second Saturday in August, so that relatives and friends from all over the States know when and where it will be held each year.
The time is spent in visiting and many linger on the grounds until almost dark.
Hiram Poor, a colored man, came for 30 years and made the coffee in two large iron kettles and John Simpson was there for the 18th time in the same capacity, with the same kettles as of "ye olden times." Rev. Arthur, the pastor of the Methodist Circuit of Churches at New Burlington, returned thanks and then a bountiful repast took place at the 150 feet of tables.
Many attended from Dayton, Springfield, Cincinnati, Columbus, and other places in the state as well as from greater distances.
Among those from outside were McKay Collett, Pelham, N. Y.; Miss Nelle Grace McKay, Lake Wales, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Irving Welch, Bismark, N. D.; Mayme C. Swindler, Washington, D. C.; John E. Swindler, Long Island, N. Y.
