78th Annual Collett-McKay Picnic Is Held

* * * *

     With all its annual accessories, namely, cloudless skies, smiling sun, gentle breezes, immense baskets of epicurean, as well as more substantial delicacies, and assembled and annimated multitudes, the 78th annual Collett-McKay family picnic was held Saturday.
     An imposing entrance with memorial plates on the gateway marks the picnic grounds. The beauty of the young sugar trees, 15 in number, set out 19 years ago, and for several years so carefully tended and watered, have grown to considerable size, and the three tables, each 50 feet long, were placed under these trees which were just high enough to form a canopy with a draft of cooling air beneath.
     Interesting features are the large registers of those in attendance with 233 registering this year. The first picnic was held in 1866, and present this year was Mrs. Ella McKay Pidgeon of Columbus street, who well remembers attending the first picnic, as she was then five years old, she has not missed many of the family gatherings. In 1867, 111 persons registered, which is the smallest number recorded, with 542 in 1888 being the largest number to attend, though several years the number passed the 400 mark. Spread out on the page of one of the registers are names of those who were in service in World War I, and this year, two pages were given over to 31 names of the connection in the service of the present war.
     The picnickers lingered and talked and frolicked and relaxed in the sunflecked shade of the grove until sundown, Saturday, in accordance with the yearly custom, then they reluctantly dispersed with the enthusiastic and yearly comment that it had been "the best picnic ever."
