THEY ARE KINSMEN.

Judge Pollard and Councilman McCune
Had the Same Ancestry.

----------

     W. C. McCune, councilman from the Fifth ward, is in Clinton county, Ohio, where his wife is a guest of his relatives. This is the first time in several years that Mr. McCune has missed the annual reunion of the Collett-McKay families, which have been held for thirty-five years and are attended by over five hundred descendants. They occur the second week in August. Mr. McCune and Judge C. N. Pollard, of this city, are descendants of Moses Collett, who came to the site of Baltimore before that city was there. Mr. McCune's great-grandfather and Judge Pollard's grandmother were brothers and sisters. The Colletts intermarried with the McKay and Ashby families, the latter being Virginians and producing the commander of the noted "black cavalry" in the civil war. Most of those who had been living in Kentucky, migrated to Ohio prior to that war because of their opposition to slavery. Mr. McCune is one of the very few Democrats among the descendants and numerically the Colletts and McKays could easily dictate the Republican party's affairs in their county. But as it is they have only asked tor two offices, they being that of county commissioners. They are large land owners, some of the number owning 1,500 acres. Samuel Collett, who recently died, owned 2,000 acres. Josephus Collett, the wealthy railroad man who died at Terre Haute, was a descendant of Moses Collett. Judge Pollard was named after one of the Ohio descendants, Clark Nickerson, a large land owner in his day. The Colletts are of French extraction.
