The Collett and McKay Picnic.
This famous festival came off last Saturday. The morning was rainy and prevented many from coming at all, and the assembling of those who did come was delayed on account of the sombre appearance of the day. There is but little change in the appearance of the picnicers from year to year. The old ones are growing grayer, and the young ones growing greater; but for all that the same warm-hearted company assemble yearly. The dinner was excellent and enjoyable; and quiet, pleasant, social enjoyment made the hours all go too rapidly away.
Rev. Mr. Bedell, of Xenia, conducted religious exercises, and in pleasant speech referred to the founders of the families in a complimentary way. Rev. Mr. Armstrong, of Harveysburg, also extolled their virtues and gave good instruction to the present generation, that they may not bring reproach on worthy ancestors. Hon. J. Q. Smith was called out, and in a pleasant and entertaining speech of ten minutes, showed that he could fill a niche on social occasions as well as harangue a Congress on questions of greater moment.
Take it all in all, we enjoyed the day and the occasion, and wish for many happy returns of a like character. We have to abridge our notice to suit our columns, but all our friends in the Collett and McKay familles may rest assured that we do not think little of them, if we do say but little of their annual picnic.
