(Not actually a newspaper write-up but information on the very first picnic gleaned from the 1939 write-up. I hope to eventually find an actual write-up for 1866 to include here.)

From the 1939 write-up:

     The first picnic was held August 3, 1866 with 111 persons present. It was held on the farm of Noah Haines in Warren county, Ohio.
