The Collett Family

DIFFERENT branches of the Collett family have worked on their line, and they do not all agree, therefore I will give first the record given me by the descendants of Sarah [Collett] Ashby.

"Three Collett brothers, Huguenots, were driven from France, one fled to the mountains of France, one to England, and one embarked with his wife to America. A son was born on the voyage, but the wife died. The son's name was Stephen, and the record says he married Elizabeth Wiley. They settled near Baltimore, Mdd. Moses Collett, son of Stephen, married Elizabeth Armstrong. They settled in Jefferson County, Virginia."

  1. Moses Collett b Nov. 17, 1718; d June 6, 1783; m Elizabeth Armstrong b Aug. 18, 1725.
    1. Stephen b May 9, 1746; went to Kentucky, killed by Indians 1820.
    2. Rachel b Dec. 15, 1748; d 1813; m Sparks in Maryland.
    3. Daniel b Feb. 10, 1752; d June 28, 1835; m Mary Haines.
    4. Elizabeth b Dec. 18, 1754; d Feb. 27, 1816; m Byers or Benk. Wiley. Some of her family lived in Indiana.
    5. John b Nov. 8, 1757; died in New York; m Elizabeth Wiley
    6. Isaac b June 14, 1760.
    7. Aaron b May 11, 1763; d Aug. 16, 1785, by Indians.
    8. Sarah b Sept. 30, 1766; d July 24, 1824; m Silas Ashby April 21, 1789. Their children and descendants given in the records of the Ashby family.

Daniel Collett, brother of Sarah [Collett] Ashby, served as a county magistrate in Jefferson County, Virginia, also as a High Sheriff. He came to Clinton County, Ohio, in 1812, where he purchased 3,000 acres of land. His descendants were prominent people in Ohio and many of their large brick houses still remain. The Colletts and McKays also intermarried and we visited in the old McKay homestead, where Sarah [McKay] Smith now resides.
