Collett Origins
Received by D. Howard Doster from Hugh S. Collett, MD, on June 1, 2003.
The English family chart was furnished to Jno. D. Collett by Henry Collett, 64, Cornhill,
E.C.3. London, England, July, 1st., 1931, who stated:
"All the Collett's originated with one family of Norman Merchants, soon after the
Norman Conquest, following which, William The Conqueror became King of England,
1066-1087, a Norman from Normandy, a province of old France facing upon the English
channel which was established by the Normans about 876, A.D. by occupation of Rouen,
France."
"Up till the 16th century, the family of Collett, Normans, of Normandy, France, spelt the
name 'Colet' (a Norman diminutive meaning 'Little Nicholas'). About the beginning of
the 16th century, this branch spelt its name 'Collet' but the children of John who
established the American family appears to have added a 't' to the name. Most families
that are extant today, both in England and America, now spell it 'Collett'."
"The Arms which originally were granted to Sir Henry Colet, Lord Mayor of London,
1486-1495, were borne by this Branch. They appear on the Jacobsen Monument in
Chelsfield, Kent, to Peter Colet, died 1607, Alderman of London, one of Humphry
Collet's sons. They were also borne by Thomas Collet, Barrister, died 1675, great-grandson
of Humphry, as is shown in the Herald's Visitation of Middlesex, made in
1665. They are also to be seen on a brass in the Church of Little Gidding, Huntington,
county, where certain members of the family dwelt in the 17th century. Thomas Collet,
Barrister, was a brother of John and Richard, Collet, who went to Baltimore, Maryland,
America, in 1650."
"Only those who were freemen of one of the Ancient Guilds were permitted to trade in
the city of London. Apprenticeship required 7 years service, after which they were
admitted to the freemen of their Guild or Company, and henceforth bore honorable
designation of, Citizen and Merchant Taylor, of London, the standing of John Collett who
married Susan Ferrar."
"This pedigree of your English ancestors is verified by Wills and other Documents. I
cannot carry the descent further back with any certainty, though the name begins to
appear in England as early as the 12th century."
