Josiah's will
was dated 4 12mo 1793 and was proved in 4th mo. 1794. In it he mentions his wife
and a land deed from Lord Fairfax in 1779. It mentions children but does
not name them. Exrs: wife and Isaac Steer. Wit: Hugh Scott, Edward
Mercer, Joseph Steer. According to Hopewell Friends History & Hinshaw's
Quaker records "Josiah and wife and small chn., Samuel & Grace, were
recieved into Hopewell MM on a certificate from Sadsbury MM, Pa." on
6 6mo 1768. Josiah was also listed as "co" at Back Creek Meeting in place of
Evan Rodgers on 4 5mo 1772 and again as "co" at Center Meeting on 3 2mo 1777
and again as "co" at Back Creek in place of John Brock who requested to be
released on 3 9mo 1792. *note, sometimes two or more people with the same
name are listed in the "dealings" (disownments, etc.) section of Hinshaw's
records concerning the Jackson family. I have endeavored to match them
with the correct people listed in this record. Even so, it has been difficult
to do so. Josiah Jackson was listed as an Overseer for Back Creek Mtg. &
also for Center Mtg. & Hopewell MM within the period 1759-1851. He was
listed as a Committee Member for Hopewell MM within the period 1777-1791.
From Shenandoah valley pioneers and their descendants: A history of Frederick County, Virginia (illustrated) from its formation in 1738 to 1908, by Thomas Kemp Cartmell (pub. 1909) (page 473):
The Jackson Family
This once numerous family in Back Creek section, has gone with other changes. Mr. Jonathan Jackson and his son now living near the Gainsboro village, are holding on as landmarks of their busy ancestors of that name. The pioneer of the family was Josiah Jackson, the same who married into the family of Joseph Steer, already mentioned as one of the first settlers. There were six sons and four daughters born of this union. The descendants became numerous; and several of the name found along the Opecquon and vicinity of Winchester, trace their lines from Josiah.
Samuel Jackson, oldest son of Josiah, born on Back Creek in 1760 and died 1845, spent nearly his entire life in the same section. He married Miss McVeigh of Loudoun County, Va.
Issue of this union: Benjamin F., Margaret A., Jonathan and Ruth G. Jonathan married Janie S., dau. of Archibald and Lydia Robinson, in 1873. One child by this marriage is the well-known Llewellyn Jackson, farmer, merchant and telephone operator. To his enterprise is largely due the good service their line gives to the Back Creek and other sections. Jonathan Jackson was born June 27, 1832; consequently he may be regarded as an old man, but he is still hale and hearty, and has his second wife. Mr. Jackson has always taken an interest in politics, being a Democrat. His parents were Friends, and enjoyed the esteem of the community.
