On the back of Moses and Abigails marriage certificate is the births of all their children and the death of their son James at age 4. They gave his name as Robert Aaron Shinn but then marked through the Aaron. He always signed his legal documents in Virginia as 'Robert S. McKay'.

His parents and brothers and sister were members of the pioneer movement into the State of Ohio, he alone remained at Cedarville, Va on the banks of the Crooked Run his home being located about three quarters of a mile above the village, on the Winchester-Front Royal Pike and on the east bank of the run. This was a substantial gray stone house which for several generations was the homes- stead of the McKays, and was the home of his grandfather, Andrew McKay. This house, unfortunately, burned in 1928, the chimneys and parts of the walls alone remaining. Robert S. McKay was one of the most prosperous farmers of the county, his estate being valued at $60,000 in 1860, and was held in high esteem for his integrity and industry. His death occurred just two week after the engagement between Jackson's forces and those of Gen. Banke during the retreat of the latter from Front Royal to Winchester between the 23rd and 25th of May 1862. During this engagement at Cedar- ville his house as well as that of Thomas Buck McKay was used as a first aid station for wounded soldiers. Robert S. McKay was first buried in the private family burying ground, that was formerly located across the Pike and almost directly opposite the house, but when this plot was abandoned, he was reinterred in the Nineveh Cemetery, there is no marker at his grave. His will was probated 20 Oct 1862, Front Royal, Warren Co. Va.
