(Obituary from The Westerly Sun http://www.thewesterlysun.com dated May 29, 2005.)
John H. Miller, born Aug. 8, 1908, died April 1, 2005, at Watch Hill Nursing Home, Westerly.
John is survived by nephews: John Miller of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Edward Miller of Littleton, Colo.; nieces Dorothy Mechaley of Madison, Conn., and Maryann Miller Brown of Framingham, Mass.
Born in Stamford, Conn., he was a graduate of Stamford High School. His undergraduate degree was from Marshall College and his master's degree from Columbia University. John was a World War II veteran.
John married Melissa McKay in 1943. The couple lived in Stamford until he retired from Pitney Bowes in 1964. Moving to their vacation retreat farm in West Stockbridge, Mass., they then pursued rebuilding the house, farming, gardening, and participated in local civic activities.
Recalling how much they had enjoyed their earlier visits to the Westerly-Watch Hill region, they relocated to the area in 1983 and took great pleasure in the Westerly beaches, the diverse community and the opportunity to garden extensively. Throughout their years together, John and Melissa always enjoyed visits by family and friends as well as their visits to favorite places in Spain and Europe.
John was a prolific reader, theater partaker, appreciated classical music and was a sports enthusiast.
John will be remembered for his independence, intellectual curiosity and his ability to engage people in stimulating conversation on virtually any subject.
Finally, John was a gracious man with a passion for life. His legacy to all who knew him is significant, and life long afternoon naps, legendary.
A private interment service for family will be scheduled later. Notes to be shared with family may be sent to: Edward Miller, 5743 Prince Street, PMB 8145, Littleton, CO 80120.
