Dr. Allen Edwin LeHew

Dr. Allen Edwin LeHew, age 97, died January 19, 2005, at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. LeHew was born on November 30, 1907, in Washington, D.C., the son of Charles Willette and Abigail Allen LeHew.

He attended elementary school and Central High School in Washington, where he lettered in track and football and was a member of the cadet corps. He attended Columbia College of George Washington University, then attended and graduated from medical school at George Washington in 1931. During medical school, he completed the full course of R.O.T.C. training, which together with two summers of C.M.T.C. duty, constituted the training needed to be commissioned First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps Reserve.

He continued his medical training at Garfield Memorial Hospital, Baltimore City Hospital, and Gallinger Municipal Hospital. At this time he passed the Maryland and District of Columbia Board Examinations.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a medical officer, serving as Camp Surgeon first at Bassett, Virginia, and then at Camp Malone at Douthat State Park near Clifton Forge, Virginia from 1934-1935.

He then began a general practice in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where he practiced until 1946 when he moved to Clifton Forge, Virginia, where he practiced Internal Medicine at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Hospital until his retirement in 1982. For several years he served as Chief of Staff of the hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rowena Radcliffe LeHew. He is survived by three children, Anne Legge of Winchester, Virginia, and her children: Helen Meola and husband Warren and daughter Rebecca; Ray Legge and his wife Mary and sons Winnie and Army; and Martha Bancroft and husband Chuck and sons Christopher and Chase; Dr. Willette LeHew of Norfolk, Virginia, and his wife Mary Louis and his four children: Allen and his children Lauren and Casey; Julie Groseclose and her three children, William, Michael, and David; William and his wife Sheri and their two children William and Erin; and Scott and his wife Jenny and their two children Charles and Lexie; Dr. Richard LeHew and his wife Betty of Richmond, Virginia and their three children; Susan and Joseph Hock and their three daughters Abigail, Elizabeth, and Marguerite; Dr. Melissa Wolfe and husband John Charles and their children Charles, Katherine, and Olivia; and Richard LeHew II.

Dr. LeHew and his wife were avid bird watchers who were in charge of the Allegheny Christmas bird count for years and naturalists who lectured throughout the area on birds, wild flowers, and mushrooms. Dr. LeHew was an avid fly fisherman and hunter as well as an enthusiast of classical music. He was a member of the Federation of Fly Fisherman, National Audubon Society, Trout Unlimited, The Medical Society of Virginia and The American Medical Society. He was also a member of The Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church. The family gratefully acknowledges the support and care given by Wilma Spangler to Dr. LeHew and his late wife, Rowena, as well as the care of the staff at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital during the past year.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 5, at 11 a.m. at Nicely's Funeral Home in Clifton Forge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rowena and Allen LeHew Scholarship Fund, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia 23943.
