It seems to me there have been some incorrect conclusions published over the years about the families of Moses McKay and Behethalin Gaines and Chaney McKay who married Margaret Bray. I seem to remember some accounts that Chaney was the only son of Moses and Behthelin. This clearly is not the case.
With the availability of Indiana death certificates on Ancestry, additional information now helps us nail down Moses and Behethaline's family more securely. Others may have already reported this, so I apologize if that's the case.
Death certificates are available for three of their children, shown Moses and Bethaline as their parents, with the usually variety of spellings of her name.
These are
Mary McKay (4 Dec. 1812-24 Sept. 1906) who married James Sammons
Elizabeth McKay (10 Nov. 1825-2 Jan. 1917) who married Jackson Stewart
Moses McKay Jr. (4 Dec. 1829-28 Nov. 1912) who married Catherine Elizabeth Dillon
I am still looking to see if any other certificates pop up, although the easy searches have been done, it's possible someone have been filed under not quite right names that will take some additional working with keywords.
I note the following names that support other children of Moses and Bethelin
William Prior and Susannah McKay had a daughter Behethalin
John Prior and Adeline McKay had a daughter Bethalin They also had a son Moses
William Parks and Isabelle McKay had a son Moses
Frank Straud McKay had a son Moses
It is clear Chaney McKay was not their son. Others have pointed out his death certificate has different parents. This has been reported several times as showing Moses Floyd McKay was his father.
The image of the death certificate clearly shows his parents as Floyd McKay and Milla Grimes. I think tacking Moses onto Floyd was one of those typical moves some genealogists make in trying to reconcile conflicting material.
I do not believe the certificate is correct. I believe Floyd was a brother to Chaney, Morris, Enos McKay, among others. Enos' death certificate has his parents as Asa McKay and Millie Lanham. I have always seen the fact that Chaney, Morris and Enos married Brays (two sisters and a cousin) supports their relationship because the Brays lived in Craig Township Switzerland County. Moses McKay had already moved on to Decatur County by the time Chaney married Margaret Bray in Switzerland County in 18430. Additionally, Asa and Millie's presumed children Lydia and H enry McKay both married Lanhams who also lived in the same area.
Floyd and Enos are buried in the same row in the Mount Zion Church cemetery in Craig Township.
I believe the incorrect information on the death record is simply the work of someone being asked to recall long ago facts when Chaney died and not getting it right. While that is not common, that kind of mistake is also not rare.
I also think the Milla Grimes is simply a mistake and it should be Milla/Millie Lanham

Chaney G. McKay named as descend of Wm. Gaines in law suit. Living children of Behethalin Gaines wife of Moses McKay were named as well.
All these records posted on my tree on Ancestry.
There has never been a legal record as Moses Floyd McKay linked to the descend of Robert Mackay of Shenandoah Co. VA.
"Helpful" people have added information to grave stones on Find a Grave which is just wrong.
Two different MacKay Families mine from Robert Mackay of Shenandoah Co.VA/Frederick Co.VA. And the family of Floyd McKay from Frederick Co. MARYLAND briefly in Shenandoah Co. VA AFTER descend of James MacKay/McKay had left for IN.
Mine line of Mackay/McKay remained in Warren Co. VA. Which line do you come ?

Ancestry has all the various death records on line, the trick is to apply the right document to the correct person.
Chenie G. McKay (sic) born 1 Dec 1818 VA d. 6 Dec 1912 IN. Wife Mary, parents Floyd McKay and Millie Grimes. He is not a member of the descends of Robert Mackay through second son James Sr. Remember my distant McKay cousins left VA before said Chenie G. McKay was born in VA in 1818. Check the tax list for Shenandoah Co. VA, not on line you will have to spend money to view them on film.
The Floyd McKay & Millie Grimes would have been born c1790, he COULD be the brother of Asia/Asa McKay who married in Frederick Co. MD to Amelia Lanham. This couple also removed to same area and people have mixed him up with my group of McKay. And researchers have mixed up Amelia Lanham with the family of Henry Lanham.
The Floyd McKay (1814-1882) was not a member of my group of McKay he did marry a descend Lucinda Vaughan.
People are mixing up these two different McKay, lots of mistakes found on Find a Grave. People should stop adding additional information to these grave markers. Let other if they wish to add additional information to their own charts.
All people have to do is to take a simple Y marker test though Family Tree DNA. The male descends of Robert Mackay of VA have established our numbering pattern.
I am positive the McKay coming down from Frederick Co. MD into Shenandoah Co. VA then on to Switzerland Co. IN are entirely different group than my of Shenandoah Co. VA into Switzerland Co. IN.

Floyd McKay (son of Asia & Amelia McKay) married into our McKay Family through his wife Lucinda Vaughan. Some day I hope a male descend will to and share a simple Y Marker Test. His male descend are NOT related to our Robert Mackay as far as surname McKay. Their DNA link to us through Lucinda Vaughan.
Through Ancestry's search engine I have compiled various original records linked to the above couple Floyd McKay & Lucinda Vaughan. Most of their lines I have down to 1940 census.
If additional information about Asia McKay of Frederick Co. MD comes my way I will post his parentage as well has his wife Amelia Lanham on Ancestry. I have posted his entries from Shenandoah Co. VA Tax List. Frederick Co. MD does not have these records. Their marriage record in Frederick Co. MD does not give their parents names. Frederick Co. MD Land Deeds as of 7/30/16 are not on line, so a researcher would have to order the film through local L.D.S. library and read them on Film Reader.
A Professional Genealogy as offered for a price to work on this couple. Since, not my direct line I will not be hiring him. His address found here if others wish to pay him $$$$$
I am placing the blood lines of our Robert Mackay Sr. on Ancestry. I am more interested in the family lines of Robert, James and Moses Mackay/McKay. They have intermarriages between the three of them.
Most intermarry with Lehew, Branson, DuBois, Shinn, Haines, Garwood, Buck (of Warren Co. VA) etc....
Hannah McKay who married George Hollingsworth, I do have an interested in his family because it is the same family found on my mtDNA line. I have place a lot of them on Ancestry. I wish Family Tree DNA made public all their results, for they have stated they have six different groups who arrived to DE, PA or MD and later left for parts of NC, SC, etc...and it is hard to separate the groups. This is the same Hollingsworth who married/affair with my Morris Family and I have found link with them and my Taylor Family of SC.

Asia McKay married 12 May 1812 in Middletown, Frederick Co. MARYLAND to Amelia Lanham (daughter of L. Lanham as listed 1810 census). I do not know if she was related to the family of Lanham in Prince George Co. VA or not, who also removed to IN.
Floyd McKay born 3 Mar 1814 (date according to his grave marker) stated born in VA BUT
Asia McKay removed down from MD into Shenandoah Co. VA listed first time on tax list 9 Apr 1814, said Floyd born in MD.
Said Asia would remain in Shenandoah Co. VA for the 1819 tax list, gone by 1820. So his children born during that time period Apr 1814 to 1819 could have been born in VA, others after 1819 Jefferson Co. TN. It might be that Floyd thought he had been born in VA and that is what he told his family members.
It has mislead modern researchers thinking that Asia McKay was linked to our group of Mackay/McKay of this location in VA--Shenandoah. A simple Y marker test would settle this point. I see no way we and they share a common male ancestor. They are a MARYLAND McKay Family. To confuse matters said Floyd McKay's wife was a member of our group of McKay.
What people record on "Find A Grave" may or not be true. What people are recording on census, marriage or death record might be true or not.
We have to check all the original records surrounding are ancestors' events to see what can be supported by other records.
Some false information has been sent into State of IN library, remember their staff does not verify if the information is correct they are just recording it. My late great-uncle would do the same, he just "believed" what others told him.
I have Asia McKay and his family members posted on my tree on Ancestry in the hope original records will pop up. Lots of false information posted on people's tree.
Some people have used Gerard McKay's line from Asa McKay of Frederick Co. VA as the same man as this Asia McKay. We know that is wrong from his Y marker test and the paper documents showing his line from VA to MO. The only male descends of this line from Asa McKay are African-American.
