A while back you mentioned about doing DNA tests for the cousins who attend the Collett-McKay Picnic. The Picnic is on Saturday 9 Aug 2014. Are these kits going to be mailed to me? If so, how many will I get. I think I would have to do a diverse sampling of different cousins, that is not too many together who are nearer relations but more or less a descendant of each of Moses McKay's children who moved to Ohio.

Check with the web master of Mackay Family Tree. I believe I have enough funds to do two Y marker test. If there is more interest I could just add more to Daisy Love McKay Fund

The test kits would be mailed to you (I believe) you would be the administrator of each kit. E-mail Mary Merritt she has done two kits. She would know how it is done.

If there is interest after the Y marker test is done, it is easy to update to "Family Finder".

Right before we moved to here in Loudoun Co. VA a member of Burch Mckay line call me and I told her about the free kits. Perhaps that line could be done.

Now that "we" have established the Y marker for Robert Mackay Sr. all Mckay males who do the test must match those number, if not then they are not members of this line of Mackay.

According to Mackay Site there are $600 in the fund for free kits. So you can order as many as you might want.

Just spread the word among our distant Mckay cousin that the "free" kits are available and they could order the test for themselves and they would be delivered to their homes.

It is all done on line and the process is rather simple. You and I have done it !!!

Documented male descends of Robert Mackay Sr. have established his number pattern. You can view it on Family Tree DNA Mackay Project.

Any male taking the DNA test MUST be RL21 or R-M269 posted both ways your first 12 numbers

14, 24, 15, 11, 11, 13, 12, 14,12,14, 13, 31

Some of males have extended their test results to 37 marker one to 118 markers.

If you have been told you are descend of Robert Mackay, but you have different numbers. Then you will have to check you personal family history.

If your blood line (like Kent Smith) show the same numbers, but you have not done the library work to link by documents your line back Robert Mackay. You can not assume you are a descend of Robert Sr. but share some distant male ancestor.

It is a very simple test and after the results are in you will know for sure if you belong to this group of Mackay. Why would you not make use of this tool.

Thanks to "Family Finder" offered by Ancestry DNA and Family Tree DNA I have documented my personal DNA ties to Thomas Buck Mckay. I must have "special DNA" because I have DNA links with researchers who descend from the other children of Robert Mackay Sr. They would be 9th or 10th cousin. I have had little fed back from them.

I think the easiest way for me to get samples is to get a list of those willing to participate at the picnic and then get the kits mailed. I want to encourage them to get the test samples returned quickly so we can get the testing under way.

I know some like Cousin Howard Doster wouldn't be able to do the Y-DNA test for Robert Mackay but just use Family Finder. He is related to me through both Steer and Mackay but he also shares Haines and other names with us.

all watch Family Tree DNA for sales. They have in the past offer the 12 Y marker test for $17 !!! We could do a lot of male McKay for that. Family Finder has been $79. This test is more money but I have received a lot more information about me and links with various other surnames in my tree.

I got a reply from Greg Roberts and I sent a response back asking about getting a list and sending samples to the test subjects.

Because of the informality of the picnic I think it would be very difficult to try and line people up for samples. This would be done much easier in the privacy of their own homes. I will stress that the tests need to be sent back asap though.

Let's us not overlook females who have McKay ancestry. Their ordering Family Finder can also be helpful. Ancestry Program should also be mentioned. Robert Mackay Sr. descends have more results filed with this site.
