My great grandparents Charles Edward McKay and Etta Double Sowers were 4th cousins, their common ancestor being Robert Mackay Jr. & first wife Patience Jobe.

They did not know of this, of course, because "McKay Family Historians" had not traced the line of Robert Mackay Jr.'s son John McKay.

Said John's grandparents would have been: Robert Mackay Sr., Ann BROWN, Andrew JOBE & Elizabeth VERNON.

Researchers who think they are descendants of said John McKay or would like to comfirm their linkage should show matches with said surnames: Mackay or McKay, Brown (Scottish), Jobe & Vernon. I know said researchers' DNA are in the Gene Pool of Ancestry DNA & Family Tree DNA.

I do not know why this simple test is lost on researchers. This is how we try to expand and confirm the surnames in our pedigree charts.

Found on page 33 of my Robert Mackay History is what I knew about John MacKay as of 1997. With Autosomal DNA Matches I hope to confirm and find new lines.

1. John Mackay born c1750 & died by 1836 Frederick or Shenandoah Co. VA, area now Warren Co. VA. I believe his wife died before him, for I can't find unaccounted for Widow McKay woman in the area. I think she was a member of another Quaker Family of Hopewell Meeting House or Crooked Run Meeting House. I will be looking for Autosomal Matches with other Quaker Families that I know lived in the area. I want to rule out surname MALIN. I have land deeds and estate division and marriage records to bind his children together, but looking for Autosomal DNA results. His children:

A. John McKay born c1777 married 1 Aug 1798 in Frederick Co. VA to Elizabeth Sugars. He made a statement in Shenandoah Co. VA Chancery Case so we have his signature. He either removed from the area or died before 1840. We know of only one child

1. Sally McKay married 29 May 1828 to cousin Haines McKay, son of Jacob & Mary (Haines) McKay. They sold their VA lands by 1833 and removed to OH. On their marriage bond (which I have) named her father as John McKay. If they had children this is a double line of the same Mackay/Mckay

B. Hatha McKay born c1777 married 23 Dec 1799 Frederick Co. VA to Thomas Johnston, bond posted by John McCoy. I do not know if they remained in VA

C. Elizabeth McKay born 1780 VA, m-1 7 Feb 1799 in Frederick Co. VA to Wm. Jenkins, my line, m-2 after 1835 to Augustine Athey, d. c1859 Clarke Co. VA, this couple has the three Autosomal DNA samples, mine, "Oldlyne29" & "Cnicewarner", this couple had 15 children who lived to adulthood. Will place under another heading.

D. Jane McKay born c1781 married 19 Oct 1798 Shenandoah Co. VA to Joseph Cooper, bondman John McKay. A descend of this line left a posting here on Michael's site, would like to make contact. They removed to WVA.

E. Susannah McKay born c1787 m. 7 Jan 1805 Frederick Co. VA to Zebidee Kendall. Listed on 1810 Frederick Co. VA census index. Thomas Johnston was bondman for marriage record

F. Amelia McKay born c1788 married 7 Jul 1806 Frederick Co. VA to Levi Hicks. We know their children were left orphans by 1836 named as: John, Mary, Levi & Amelia Hicks. In their guardian reports stated that each entitled to a portion of the estate of John McKay.

This is what we have to work with and if you think you might have this line in your chart, just do a Autosomal DNA test and find out for sure.

I have had for years a small paper trail leading my Frederick Co. VA Jinkins/Jenkins back to PA.

I also rather thought at one time this line of Jinkins/Jenkins were members of Hopewell Friends or Crooked Run Meeting House. You will find a few entries for the surname in Hopewell Friends History.

So not a big surprize with Autosomal DNA sample I have been able to find filed by a Jenkins researcher (who is also Edwards cousins) he descends from Jonathan Jenkins who came down from PA and was at one time member of Hopewell Friends. Believe Jonathan Jenkins died in present day WVA.

I do want to find others who descend from this line who share Jenkins but not Edwards.

Logically Wm. Jenkins who married Elizabeth McKay might have been members of the same Meeting House at one time. I have not ruled out they could have been cousins. Both sets of parents and grandparents at one time members of the Society of Friends.

She must have been a very strong woman, because she had 15 children who lived to adulthood. We have their names through estate settlement of Wm. Jenkins, marriage records and land deeds. Now I am trying to collect DNA samples to further confirm each blood line.

Wm. Jenkins with wife Elizabeth McKay, daughter of John McKay (his blood lines: Mackay/McKay, Brown, Jobe & Vernon) had the following children:

1. Wm. K. Jenkins b. 1800

2. Catherine Jenkins b. 1802, m. 28 Jan 1818 Frederick Co. VA to Wm. Sowers, d. c1862 "Rose Hill" Clarke Co. VA. This is my line and another from Sowers cousin.

3. Delilah Jenkins b. c1804 m. Thomas Reeves

4. Frances Jenkins b. c1808 m. Russell Becket

5. Sarah Jenkins b. c1810 m. 14 Sep 1844 Clarke Co. VA to Stephen Reed.

6. John Jenkins b. 1811 m. 27 Oct 1831 Frederick Co. VA to Sarah Grim

7. Joseph Jenkins b. c1812

8. Jane Jenkins b. c1817 m. 21 Nov 1836 Clarke Co. VA to Thomas Davis. On their marriage bond named her mother as Elizabeth Athey. Listed on her father's estate settlement, this is Autosomal DNA sample "Oldlyme29". She is not aware she has McKay ancestry.

9. Harriet Jenkins b. c1819 m. 25 Jan 1837 Clarke Co. VA to Osmin Chamberlin

10. Nancy Jenkins b. 1820 m. 10 Nov 1849 Clarke Co. VA to Benjamin Longerbeam

11. Reuben Jenkins b. 1822, listed on 1839 estate division as son.

12. Edin Jenkins m. 16 Jan 1844 Clarke Co. VA to Mary Ann Henry, listed on 1839 estate division

13. Margaret Jenkins m. Edward Allen

14. Washington Jenkins

15. Thomas Jenkins b. 1822 m. Ellen.......?

This line from Robert Mackay Sr. to son Robert Mackay Jr. to son John McKay had before I posted him in connection with my The Buck Family Tree not known to the public. So now the name is on NET !!

So if any of the above couples have descends who are looking for their surnames they most likely are not aware they are members of The Family of Robert Mackay of VA.

So if you know or think you are descendants of one of the above couples, just do a Autosomal DNA test, you should match with me, various other Jenkins, McKay, Jobe, Brown (Scottish), Jobe & Vernon. And there will other surnames linked to said couple which I have not figured out as of now.

Found on "Oldlyme29" family tree she has picked up some bad information found Doughtie's book page 94 which found its way into the net.

Wm. Jenkins did not marry Elizabeth McKee daughter of Robert McKee.

Printed on page 102 the correct entry Elizabeth McKoy married Wm. Jenkins 7 Feb 1799.

The family of Robert Mckee removed to OH.

I am looking at Alice Pugh born 10 Nov 1750 according to Hopewell Friend History, she was the known daughter of Jesse & Alice (Malin) Pugh.

I have many DNA Matches with researchers who descend from Jesse's children and family of Malin.

I have the names of Alice's siblings and I know I have matches with Ruble family and Beeson Family.

The Beeson, however, married into Ridgeway family who has connection with McKay family.

I have found members of the Jenkins family that I have a match, also married into the Pugh family.

Time will tell if I have found the wife of John McKay.

If you would like to help and are a descend of Elizabeth McKay who married Wm. Jenkins, look at your Autosomal Matches on Ancestry and see if you have matches with: McKay, Jobe, Vernon, Brown (Scottish), Pugh, Roberts, Rogers, Malin & Jones.

Family Tree DNA has a researcher who has Malin on his listing of names--Robert Dale Browning, also states his male line Charlemagne and female line to Robert Bruce (1274-1329). I do not know if I believe him. Will e-mail him.

I am interested in Malin, we share DNA material #5 9.82

Either of my two sons showing a match with him.

Also have researcher on his site showing Pugh & Beeson matches.
