With your Hartless Family, one researcher Donald Hunter has his tree on Ancestry Hunter/McMullin. Do you know him ? Really no more information about him that you do not know.
He has Wm. James buried in Lexington, VA.

Find a grave does not have his grave marker, listed. A lot of the surname buried at Spring Valley Baptist Cemetery of Rockbridge Co. VA.

There is a picture of a grave marker for Wm. J. Hartless New Monmouth Presbyterian Cemetery, location? think must be another man.

If you do not have people you are working with dealing with Rockbridge Co. VA families. I could send me a message to contact you. Up to you. Will not do any thing until I here from you.

Only one Y marker test as been sold to male Hartless.

There could be Mitochondrial DNA that have been done, which would shed more light on your make up, but hard to get that information.

I have two researchers who have Hartless on their listing of surname who show DNA matches with me. I do not think I have said Hartless in my tree, we have other DNA in common.

patricianna1980 descend from James Hartless born 1752 Caroline Co. VA, d. 1804 Amherst Co. VA m............? daughter Nancy Elizabeth Hartless born 1772 in Rockbridge, d. 1837 Amherest, married to Joseph Jarvis.

Gary Wood lives in Lovingston, VA. He descend from Wm. Hartless (1754-1835) married Nancy Staton, their son Lindsey Hartless (1810- ) married Mary Louisa Burch.

Both researcher seem to be in the same location as your family lived.

There is a problem dealing with the Hartless Y-DNA on my line. In two generations the Hartless name was passed through the mother rather than the father. Father in both of these generations remains unknown at this time. A Y-DNA test on the male descendants of both of these women would no doubt match other surnames. I don't think that is the case with the earlier generations of Hartless though.

I find it odd that my son shows no matches with his distant known McKay cousins: Linda F. Rogers, Brian W. Beck & Glen Jo. Hill. He does match with Michael L. McKay on #1 & #15. So he has picked up that part of my gene pool for McKay & Sowers.

Out of the five Mackay/McKay living in Canada, New Zealand or Australia he shows matches with three of them: Pamela M. Thomson, Roderic W. Fairweather & Margaret Macphail.

On my mother's side quick look he matches with James F. Hopgood, John W. Mayberry & Mona Gail Romans.

No Derryberry.

On his Population Finder, his map looks just like his father's, which I find strange.
I have two messages into Family Tree DNA. Questions about Brandan's test results.

I show 54 pages of matches
My husband as 27 pages of matches
My son Brandan has 39 page of matches

That really does not make sense to me. Why he would not match with closer distant McKay cousins, but match the ones much farer, does not make sense.

Also his Population Finder looks too much just like his father's.

Hope to hear from them today or tomorrow.

Does Irvin's ancestors come from southern VA and NC? I've been wondering where these people came from and how they ended up in North America. I thought maybe we might be related to Roma (Gypsies) because historically they've been in existence in Europe for centuries with no clear place of origin other than it isn't Europe. Plus there are stories of North African groups saling to parts of the European coast including Ireland and Great Britain.
Irvin's mother's mother side really all German. Desch & Claus. How what happened in that part of Europe before they came here-- I have no idea and have no plans to paper research his blood lines.

The Middle Eastern part of his Population Finder is from that part of his tree.

His Bunting line were once Quakers from Matlock, Derbyshire, England their parish church can be found on line. Four brothers: Samuel, John, Job & his Wm. came to NJ about c1683 the two eldest brother built the Chesterfield Meeting House in NJ. Irvin's line through Wm. Bunting removed directly down eastern shore of VA. Lived in Accomack then Norfolk, VA c1840.

I thought if we shared common ancestry it would have been with this family Bunting. But we have not been measured as cousins.

His Parker were living early Nansemond Co. VA and Gates Co. NC. I have most of the maiden names of their wives. It would appear all Western European. Irvin's Population Finder bears out he is even more British Isles than I am.

Yep, both of us are great (3x) grandchildren of Thomas Buck McKay. Our generations overlap in some areas. Daryl McKay is my 3rd cousin once removed too but I'm older than he is by 2 years.
Do you think he might do a Y marker test--are free.

Years ago I learned through another researcher that this group of people lived in "hills of North Carolina" and perhaps my Bowling/Bolen of Granville Co. NC were part of that group.

I was looking for non-white blood line because of my "family tales" and some of the pictures of H.J. Bolen family members "looked" non-white.

However, with my Autosomal testing on both Ancestry (measures to 1%) and Family Tree DNA. I do not see this kind of racial group in my tree.

Who married into H.J. Bolen's family through his female lines, I really do not care.

My one African blood line, I know where she came from because of the Mitochondrial numbers of my great-grandmother.

Now, perhaps I have another African, Indian (from India) or Native American blood line back 12 to 14 generations. That will not be found until and if I am able to collect all my Y markers and Mitochondrial markers that apply to my chart.

I am thinking about putting one of my sons Autosomal DNA under Ancestry DNA to see the break down of their racial groups.

I've heard about them when I first started looking up stuff on Indian ancestry online. I guess if they are connected to Hartless and others could explain the "Middle Eastern" blood.

It could also be a case like Irvin's in that it was present prior to immigration. Still would like to know why my Hartlesses were considered "mulatto".

We could ask Daryl to do the test. He would match closer to you in that he's the grandson of your great-uncle Hunter which makes you and he 2nd cousins.

Have you learned anything worth while upgrading your Y markers?
