I check Family Tree DNA for the spelling of MacKay/McKay as McCoy, some of the family members removed south changed the spelling of the name:

Ten researcher which match my DNA profile have McCoy as surnames: Glen Lewis Graves, Elizabeth A. Graves, James M. Elster, Michael G. Staley, Lyman L. Ritter, Ann S. Wexler, Jean S. Bergeson, Brett Arnett, Todd D. Duke & Peter McCoy Davis.

Somewhere in their trees I share with them DNA. But the question is, do we come from the same group of McCoy or Mackay/McKay.

Using the profiles of my known distant McKay cousins: Linda Franks Rogers & Brian W. Beck, as a filter-- none of the above people share DNA with either of them. So I take away from this, these people are studying a different family. Their McCoy is not relationed with my Mackay/McKay.

Through Y Marker Test we have proven as sons of Robert MacKay SR: Robert, James & Moses. Missing a sample for poor Zachariah. That I am aware !!

We have firmly established his (Robert Sr.) Y marker numbering pattern. So male Mackay/McKay researchers trying to link their line back in time just have to do a DNA test to see if this group of MacKay are their line. This is the first step in doing genealogy work. Simple test will safe you so much time and money !!

If you know you are a member of this family and can not get your male relations to do a Y marker test or you descend through female line, not to worry.

Through Autosomal tests now on file with Family Tree DNA (that I am aware) three samples one descendant of Robert Jr. (me), James Sr. (Linda Evans) & Moses Sr. (Brian W. Beck) all are showing matching DNA. These are my 7th or 8th cousins.

Mary Meritt has a sample on file through Ancestry's same program. And I also have an account with them. I will be searching this site in future for McKay cousins. Or others can help in this effort.

I hope out there in "Genealogy Land" descendants of the daughters of Robert Sr.: Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Leah & Hannah have turn in samples and I am not aware. Or if you descend from one of them doing the above test can establish your McKay line.

Just a word that you have a test on file would help others trying to sort out their own family history.

Through Family Tree DNA Path Finder a researcher Dorothy Margaret Elder and I show a DNA with surname Mackay.

Her oldest named McKay-- Ann McKay daughter of Ann Provost of Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty in 1766. I would say about 4 generation later than our Robert Mackay.

I told her of your web site and hope she will give us more information. I did inform her we have the Y marker of our Robert Mackay.

Now-- if one of our other known descendants of Robert MacKay would submitt a sample to their Family Path Founder, it would be VERY interesting to see if that sample also matched her.

I thought this test only went back 5 generations, but perhaps some of the DNA lines might go back farer.

You can google said town, I do not think the parish records go back as far as we shall need.
On page 133 of my Robert MacKay Book, list marriage between Ann McKay b. 15 May 1788 Kenton Co. KY on 25 Oct 1803 in Campbell Co. KY to Samuel Kyle.

At the time I only had names of their children from the notes of Hunter B. McKay, which means another researcher send him the information.

Children: Joseph, Frank, Sallie, Jacob, George, Polly, Perry & Ann.

The researcher Glenn J. Hill is looking for Thomas W. Kyle b. 22 Oct 1851 married 1881 in Denton Co. TX to Florence M. Owen.

Said Jacob I have been given his children as: Adeladie, Ann, Ellen, Samuel, Neillie & Susan

Missing Frank, but a Catherine age 51 on Kenton Co. KY 1860 with James E. 27 and Alfred 15.

George 46, Ellen 45, Jacob 22, Joseph 19, George 14, Elizabeth Miller 21 & Mary Kyle 24 all living in 1860 Kenton Co. KY.

Missing information on Perry Kyle.

Any one looking for these Kyle please let me known

Just finished watching Scotland Highland by John Michie.

He mentioned "The Hector" as being called The Mayflower of Nova Scotia. Arrived Canada 1773. Now this could be about 121 years after I believe our MacKay left Scotland or about 5 to 6 generations later.

I have been puzzeled by the DNA material I share with people who live in Australia, New Zealand & Canada.

I did not think it possible that Autosomal Test tracked DNA material back this far in time, but this is what these test results are saying.

Mckay on board said ship (The Hector): Colin, Roderick, Donald, Donald, (two listed), Wm., Margaret, Christopher, Catherine, Margaret (two listed), John, Mary, Wm. (two listed), Donald (two listed), Wm. (three listed, he was piper), James, John, Roderick & Wm. All above 8 years of age.

Children under two years of age

Colin McKay child of Colin
John McKay child of Ann
Colin McKay child of Alex
Roderick McKay child of Ann
Wm. McKay child of Flora

Passengers from 2 to 8 years of age

Alex McKay
George McKay

When Michael's Autosomal Test hits the gene pool, I should be able to see if his sample has some of the same DNA sharing with the same researchers.

If Mary Meritt does the test as well, that would be very helpful.

I do have two more Scottish men I do not know if their material is what is showing up.

1. John Hampton b. c1640 Elphinstone, East Lothian, Scotland, he was a Quaker and they had records in his location, Aberdeen & Glasgow.

2. John MacNeil b c1700 VA?, I believe his father or grandfather was the emigrate. His line could be another prisoner send to colony after defeat of Charles I.

Mentioned in this program that Highlanders removed down to Glasgow looking for work early 1800. Two of the researcher I matched with had families that lived in this location.

Perhaps our Mackay Family really were Highlanders.

Since we're matching with other known descendants of Robert Mackay Sr. could it be possible that the matches are the result of other Quaker families we share common ancestry with like Antrim, Job or Ridgeway?

Our Antrim family came over in ship "James". I do not remember the names of the other ships.

Family Tree DNA has a group that studys various Quaker Family. But you can see their evidence unless you have a Y marker to place into the group.

I consider this a real draw back doing DNA research. This group is not freely open to the public who have an interest in their gene pool because you have a blood line included, but do not have the all important Y marker.

I have send e-mail to an Antrim researcher who has his test results posted on Y searcher, but have not heard back from him. There might be a web page dealing with the Antrim Family. As more people turn in their test, we might be able to see particular marker for Antrim. Its Y marker is another "R".

Personally I do not know of a 2nd or 3rd Antrim cousin, who would do the test? Do you ?

I could think Job/Jobe family has a study going on with Job/Jobe DNA, but I do not believe I have seen one show up in my results. I have just started to study the results. I have a marker for this family as Rlb from Y Search.
I believe you have links to various Job Web Page, ask if any of them have done the Autosomal test.

Ridgeway might have a web page and study going on, but it is not public.

From my own Autosomal test when I see mutal families results I will post them here.

At the moment I am trying to figure out about a dozen Scottish & Irish families who left Scotland about 100 years after our Robert's family, but are showing a small amount of DNA material with me.

I have other researcher having ancestry in England or Wales, could be from one of our English Quakers or other of my other English families. At the moment I have no idea.

Michael, assuming you can still get into my Autosomal account.

Look at researcher Michael Glenn Staley we share chromosome #11 and he states his oldest known male Conrad Staley Sr. born 1736 Germany died 1816 NC and his oldest known female Margaret Madison STROTHER born 1726, died 1786. From Ancestry stated she was married to John Robbins.

Do you know of this couple from your research.

I have not figure out his personal chart as now, but he stated in this listing of surname Borden.

I do not know if our shared DNA material came through his male line or female line. So my shared DNA material might be this Borden

It will be interesting to see if you share DNA material with as well.

I have researcher listing Branson (e-mail came back) and DuBois. Tons of material of this family if you have time.

Yep. We assume the connection we have with the other McKay cousins is from shared McKay ancestry but could easily be from one of the other families. Who is to say with some of them like Jobe and Ridgeway that there is a Scottish connection prior to the immigrant. I know Ridgeway goes back a few generations in England.

Since I know that Stanley H. Heiskell & I share the same Hampton ancestry, I used his DNA as profile to see if the other researcher showing Scottish ancestry had same markers. Stanley H. Heiskell has #3 & #11. Since marker #3 smaller than #11, assuming #3 is his Hampton.

The only researcher showing #3 was Phyllis B. Fox and her section of #3 is rather close, but not the same.

I found her pedigree chart on line and with census information, it would appear any exchange of DNA material between the three families must haven in Britain.

She has her grandfather Charles J. Watson Jr. born 1852 in Scotland but the 1900 census stated he was born in Washington, DC, father in England and mother in Scotland.

His wife Annie M. Bolton born in Phil. PA, father in England and mother in in NY. Found her with her parents in 1880 Phil. Co. PA and her father was born in England and both of his parents. His wife Maria born in NY, but her parents in England.

The remaining researchers showing Scottish roots still the running to be the ancestry of Robert Mackay or John MacNeil and of course surnames I do not know about as of how.

So this might be a mystery I will not been able to solve.
