Through Family Tree DNA Path Finder a researcher Dorothy Margaret Elder and I show a DNA with surname Mackay.

Her oldest named McKay-- Ann McKay daughter of Ann Provost of Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty in 1766. I would say about 4 generation later than our Robert Mackay.

I told her of your web site and hope she will give us more information. I did inform her we have the Y marker of our Robert Mackay.

Now-- if one of our other known descendants of Robert MacKay would submitt a sample to their Family Path Founder, it would be VERY interesting to see if that sample also matched her.

I thought this test only went back 5 generations, but perhaps some of the DNA lines might go back farer.

You can google said town, I do not think the parish records go back as far as we shall need.

Found a message posted in Gen Form Scotland Board, he runs a DNA study for the area of Ross-Shire.

his e-mail address michaelmunro84@hotmail.com

I hope his study is on line and open to all. I can't transfer a McKay marker into his study, I hope other male McKay will.

I had a nice visit today with Mary Meritt and she said her first cousin (McKay) WILL be doing the test. I can most likely get her to tranfer this results into this DNA bank.

I do not know how much data is tranfered between British DNA banks and the ones here in US. In any case, I would like to see our Robert Mackay numbering pattern placed into this bank.

Mary Meritt is trying to join the DAR and will be placing our Robert MacKay Sr. through Moses' DNA pattern as part of their records.

I wish DAR would require all people joining their Society to registry their DNA markers.

Hey Dee Ann,

That is cool news. You have a hit with some back to Scotland. Obviously more hits are needed, but it could be a start. Did you speak to Dorothy or email her?

It is hard to understand the lineage of Ann McKay or Ann Provost? Are we to assume that Ann McKay became a McKay by marriage? I would have to assume so since the mother is Ann Provost. I am just curious if we have any additional info.

I hope you are well and thank you for sharing.

Family Tree DNA Family Finder is having a sale $99 for Autosomal and I am trying to get an another known descend of Robert MacKay Sr. to take the test to see if they match as well on the same chromosome. I do not begin to understand all the different matching on each chromosome.

Mary Meritt visited me last week and she is willing to do all she can do to help.

She and I are about 9th or 10th cousin and her sample and mine did NOT match in Ancestry. We are also a distant Denton cousin.

On the other hand, I have had 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th cousin match right up and I thought they should.

Since I do not have a McKay Y Marker I can't question the people who run the MacKay/McKay site, to see if men living in Scotland have their results in their data bank.

My line from Robert MacKay Sr.
Robert MacKay Jr.
Jacob McKay
Jacob McKay
Jacob McKay
Thomas Buck McKay
Charles E. McKay
Daisy L. McKay
Ralph E. Shipp
me

So the above woman would have to be 13 generation back in time !! I did not think the test when back that far.

Time will tell if their is something to this DNA match. According to what she said her ancestors were in Scotland and removed to Australia. Now none of my family members lived in Australia.

Just because I have this DNA sample does not "we" have found the documented birth place of Robert's family.

I still am of the opinion Robert was born in MA or north of NJ. It was his father who was the emigrate.

I would like to see some Y marker that have been send in my Scotman living in Scotland.

There are web site about this small village on the net. "Fine of Grave" I could get results just for Ross, Scotland.

The Elder family did live in this village Killearnan for a long time.

Now, if Mr. Smith would track his line back to MA, like I think he is going that would help in our research.

The Chromosome Match Section of Family Tree Family Finder I am still trying to make sence of it all. But well worth the price of $99.

My known first cousin once removed--James F. Hopgood--we share all the same DNA as given to me from grandfather Roy D. Hopgood: Hopgood, Snyder, Rudd, Taylor, Gist etc....The site stated that we share segiment 21, but on the listing of chromosome: 5,7,10,12,16,17,20.

There are three other researchers who named Rudd or Gist in their listing of surnames:

Dr. David M. Harris has segiment 16 but chromosome 10--which is shared with both James & myself--Rudd

Marion L. Minnis has segiment 9-- 16 but chromosome--which share with all four--Rudd

Vance L. Hawking has segiment 11 and he shares 20 chromosome with both me and James F. Hopgood--Gist. This researcher has only 20 not the other two. So my question is will other Gist researcher in future focus on number 20.

My Bolen, Melton & Carrington cousins show various matching chromosome as I think they should.

However-- when I look at the researchers who have stated MacKay or McKay on their surname lists they are all over the map. I will study the lists again and see if I can sort some thing out.

The researcher "we" are looking at is Dorothy M. Elder (8) segiment but match found on 22 chromosome only 7.98 cm.

I guessing the amount of shared DNA--if greater the amount could be a closer cousin or small amount points the way to a remote cousin.

I have just heard from Mrs. Linda Franks Rogers she would be my 7th cousin once removed. She from Robert Sr. to second son James to Robert B., to Enoch McKay to his daughter Sophia McKay.

The chromosome we share #6 only 9.5

Dorothy M. Elder I share #22 only 7.98

Hope more samples will turn up in future.

Brian W. Beck and share Chromosome 3 only 9.04. He included his PAF pedigree chart with his sample.

He ended his McKay line on line with Tempy Adeline McKay (1891-1928)

Through on line census it did not take me long to figure out we are 8th cousins. His line Robert Sr. to youngest son Moses Sr. to Abraham to Abraham (think his male line Y Marker on file) to Andrew Carson McKay to James Nichols McKay to Temy A. McKay to Viola M. Roberds to Hubert W. Beck to said Brian W. Beck.

So my proven distant McKay are on two different chromosome.

I am just taking people at their word that they have Mackay or McKay in their charts the remaining Pamelia M. Thompson, Roderic W. Fairweather, Margaret Macphail & G.H. H. Shaw. All their families lived in Scotland, Canada or New Zeland. Two have ancestor who lived in Glasgow.

Some people have not included surnames with their samples, so I have no idea if other of distant cousins are listed.

Three remaining MacKay who showed matches to my DNA profile

Pamela M. Thompson on #15 can'tget amount lived in Glasgow & New Zealand

Roderic W. Fairweather on #15 lived in Glasgow then New Zealand

Margaret Macphail on #21 Glasgow, England, NJ & Canada

G.T. H. Shaw on #12 lived in Glasgow & Canada

All these people families lived "across the pond" long after my families had left. Seem to have a connection with Glasgow

Mrs. Dorothy M. Elder pointed out three other researchers match me on #22 & #21

1. Molly Hanson on #22 families listed Italy, Canada & Suffolk, England

2. Iva Jo Carlson on #22 she might be a distant Hampton cousin and not member of our Mackay family

3. Becky Hughes on #21 as NC & TN, she could be related to my mother's mother family and not member of our Mackay/McKay family.

Since the DNA in two other cases pointed to a connection with our Robert MacKay Sr.: Linda Evans & Brian W. Beck and I have since proven it, there must be a connection with our Robert MacKay back in Scotland.

Time will tell.

Through Y Marker Test we have proven as sons of Robert MacKay SR: Robert, James & Moses. Missing a sample for poor Zachariah. That I am aware !!

We have firmly established his (Robert Sr.) Y marker numbering pattern. So male Mackay/McKay researchers trying to link their line back in time just have to do a DNA test to see if this group of MacKay are their line. This is the first step in doing genealogy work. Simple test will safe you so much time and money !!

If you know you are a member of this family and can not get your male relations to do a Y marker test or you descend through female line, not to worry.

Through Autosomal tests now on file with Family Tree DNA (that I am aware) three samples one descendant of Robert Jr. (me), James Sr. (Linda Evans) & Moses Sr. (Brian W. Beck) all are showing matching DNA. These are my 7th or 8th cousins.

Mary Meritt has a sample on file through Ancestry's same program. And I also have an account with them. I will be searching this site in future for McKay cousins. Or others can help in this effort.

I hope out there in "Genealogy Land" descendants of the daughters of Robert Sr.: Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Leah & Hannah have turn in samples and I am not aware. Or if you descend from one of them doing the above test can establish your McKay line.

Just a word that you have a test on file would help others trying to sort out their own family history.
