I am helping a friend who is related to the McCoy and Job line. She wants to do a submission to the DAR. In some of the genealogy trees there is a reference to Revolutionary War service by Moses McCoy from Virginia.

Here is what I found.

12th Regiment, 1777-78 (folders 302-307); 13th Regiment, 1777-78 (folders 308-315) [NARA roll 111]
U.S. Revolutionary War Rolls, 1775-1783 about Moses MacKay
Name: Moses MacKay
Rank - Induction: Sergeant
Roll Box: 111
Roll State: VA

Has anyone been able to document this?

Her lineage is as follows:

Moses McKay
Richard McCoy
George H McCoy
George W McCoy
Laura Lavina McCoy
Lydia Belle Willard
Grace L. Curtis
Col Reginald Theodore Weber

Any help on known documentation and sources would be wonderful..

I am making a road trip to DC, the DAR and the National Archives in a few weeks and want to make sure I have as much documentation available as possible ahead of time as it is very time consuming at best.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Robert Mackay Sr. youngest son Moses Mackay (husband to Mary Job/Jobe) was in Frederick Co. VA Militia, drowned Sep 1777 while in Army.

We have documented he had six children: Isaac, Abraham, Jeremiah, Moses, Wm. & Rachel. Through land deeds, wills etc....

No Richard. There could be two different Moses, or your friend has not documented Richard as a son of Moses.

There were many different Mackay/McKay/McCoy families living in the area of Frederick/Shenandoah counties. When you look at the rest of State VA many more different Mackay families. Modern researcher may think the same family, but they are not.

If your friend would submit a DNA sample through Ancestry--Beta, I have a sample on file. Or through Family DNA Family Path Finder, I have a seceond sample on file.

If you friend is a descendant of Robert MacKay Sr., "we" should show a match to mine. If you have a male McKay/McCoy we have several of "our" male McKay found in Ancestry DNA study and through Family Tree DNA.

DNA is the way to go. The test will save you time and monies. Good luck with your research.

I found your family tree on line and printed out the the line on Moses and saw there was no Richard. So much for the information on Ancestry.com. I will talk to her about having a dna done. I was the one doing the research, so any mistakes are mine. I am trying to document.

Will go back though the records to see if I can find the problem.

"Possible Ancestry of Moses McCoy of Montgomery Co. VA" by Kaye McCoy, now found on Ancestry.

Same source Kevin McCoy has pick up and now trying to prove a false blood line. It can't be done.

We have posting about Moses Mackay Sr. military record here on Michael's site. Mary Meritt is trying to join DAR through his time in army. E-mail her to see what she has found on Moses. She know Moses did not have a son named Richard.

Hey Dee Ann,

Do you have documentation that Moses Sr fought in the revolutionary war? I am going to apply to be a Son of the Revolutionary War. Moses Sr is my line up to Robert MacKay Sr. I see you noted his fighting / death. Just curious if you have the muster roll?

E-mail her she is working on "our" Moses Mackay, not the same on earlier posting. Moses who had son named Richard.

I hope someday to find mtDNA samples from female descends of Hannah Mackay and Leah Mackay. I believe your Moses was not son of Ann Brown. I am sure earlier D.A.R. records will have Moses Mackay Sr. as son of Robert Mackay Sr. and Ann Brown.

We must all look at copyright date of all sources we are using. Information before DNA we should all be aware might not be correct.
