Hi - my name is Shaun Thomas McKay. I am a descendent of Robert Mackay Sr. through Missouri and into Chicago, IL. My genealogy is Robert MacKay Sr, Moses MacKay, Jeremiah McKay Sr, Jeremiah Mckay Jr, Jeremiah Thomas McKay, Thomas Oswell McKay, Benjamin G McKay, Thomas Glenn McKay and myself (I actually have a 2 year old son, Tristan Cole Rhys McKay, so the line continues).

First off, I want to thank everyone that has put the time in and done the research to put all this important information out there for us McKays to learn about our history.

So recently I decided to do the whole genealogy thing and found all this McKay information. Almost overwhelming. I have always been told "stories" of my family history. My aunt also has a lot of info. But from my research, and based on the questions of where Robert MacKay Sr came from, the newer information on the first wife being Ann Brown, our information is problem not accurate any longer

I have been reading as much as possible on Robert MacKay Sr and the anomly that is his early life. Is there any new information about R McKay Sr's early life? Where he might be from? Any definite information about Ann Brown? I saw a listing that says we have information of a Robert McKay in Freehold NJ, in 1705. Is that still the earliest information we have on R McKay Sr life? Can you point me in the right direction? Books to read that might help?

I was also thinking, how does R McKay Sr show up in Virginia, become a prominent land owner / seller, but we have virtually no information on his early life? Could there be more to it than that? Could Robert have changed his name (hopefully that question is not blasphemy)? Could he have been more prominent in NJ, but got into trouble and needed to move on?

I do understand the fact that information may be hard to come by from the 1600, and that Robert McKay may be a common name.

Oh, and I was recently in Scotland (May 2011) and was proud to say I was a McKay.

Anyways, any feedback would be great.

Sincerely,

Shaun

I posted earlier a longer response to your posting, but it was dumped.

We have a DNA for the profile of Robert Mackay Sr. Check out Family Tree DNA for listing of surname McKay.

That's the first I would do if researching any surname.

Some of your other questions will be answered by reading my earlier postings.

Hi - thank you. Is the website for DNA:http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Mac ... fault.aspx?

Otherwise I found nothing specific to Robert Mackay Sr.

You have to know the kit number to see the four men who have send in their samples. Michael has posted those numbers here.

I have set up "Daisy Love McKay Fund" which if you e-mail the project manager of Mackay site, state your sample goes back to Robert Mackay Sr., then you should receive your "free 12 marker test kit".

If you view the site for Bolling Family they have set up the various different families by location and oldest known ancestor. All of which is very helpful in figure out one group from the other.

Mackay site is not grouped at all. It looking like the number of samples now posted have increased since they last time I looked. Must have not been for our Robert Mackay, or Michael would have posted those results.

Ancestor.com also has a small DNA section and you do not have to be member to view the results.

How do you donate to this fund? Through you?

I really do not know why people are not jumping at the opportunity of DNA studies, particularly with a surname like Mackay/Mckay......etc

What are people afraid of not taking a DNA test?. Not being related to the surname you thought. If that were the case I would think you would want to know the truth before doing a lot of work collecting material not in your blood line.

Just e-mail the manager of the Mackay Project. They will tell you how to order a kit. I hope your branch of the family will send in a test samples. The more samples send in the more firm the profile will be for Robert Mackay Sr. There is one other kit from your line of Moses Sr.

And if in the future Mackay people "out west" want to know if they are related to our group of MacKay/Mckay etc....."we" can say just take the test!!

E-mail Michael about the project he knows more about it than I do.

Good luck with your research.

HI Dee Ann,

Thank you for your help. Also, I have seen the amount of work you have put into this. Thank you is probably not enough, but Thank you. Without your efforts (and others two), we wouldn't know what we do.

If you ever come to Chicago, let me know. I will tell you where to go.

Some of the children of my Aunt Gloria (Shipp) Bowen live in Chicago.

Check out the posting by "our" Cousin Gerard McKay-- if not for this DNA study he would never been able to prove his McKay Blood Line back to Robert Mackay Sr.

Hi - do we know anything about Robert Mackay of Maryland, 1658? This individuals is referenced as someone connected to Jonathan Prater and George Gouldsmith (in his will I believe as receiving 100 acres of land).

In looking through the internet, I saw a post that states the 1658 Robert MacKay is the emigrant. Dee Ann Buck has reference this same individual in the message board. I have also been reading that he is "related" (without any proof) to a Lyle Jane McKay (female).

Do we know much about this Robert MacKay (MacKey) that had a friendship with George Gouldsmith / Jonathan Prater (who coincidently married Lyle Jane McKay)?

The only reason I ask is because Calvert Co, MD is a place that our Robert McKay owned land in later in life, as a Quaker. I wonder if there is any relationship with the MacKay's referenced in MD in 1658 and our Robert MacKay? He could have started in that area of the USA, made his way up to NJ and then back again. It is a long shot but just curious.

Thanks,

Shaun
