I have just started to research my four German Families: Sowers, Wolf, Shipp & Snyder. Only Sowers & Snyder I assumed were German. Of course, others surnames will be added as I recover maiden names.

Palatinate as a province furnished by far largest contingent of the German emigration to PA. I have lots of information at the public library and L.D.S. library still to read through.

Wm. Penn went to this area of Germany between 1717-1773 and brought to PA over 68,872 immigrants. Then I have been told the Quaker communities started to "elbow" out the Germans to other parts of PA, MD and VA.

The public library and L.D.S. also have a sources materials for PA I have not fully examined. A number of other researchers work on German Records at my local L.D.S. library, so I can tap them for information.

My four families started out in Philadelphia and took three known paths out of the city--1. directly to Emmitsburg, MD--SHIPP, 2. The ones who removed into the counties north of the city removed western PA into OH & IN--SNYDER, 3. Third path removed down to Lancaster or York counties PA, then down into VA--SOWERS & WOLF.

SOWERS: Jacob born c1710 (or earlier) died 1781 in Winchester, VA. He was in Winchester by 1732. Lived in Lancaster Co. PA before VA. Came down with others (need to get the names) chart member of the German Reformed Church in Winchester, VA. This fact member of this church, most likely a Swiss Family who removed into Germany after the Thirty Years War. I am looking for him to have married in PA.

WOLF: Andreas born 1706 arrived in ship "Plaisance" on 27th Sep 1732 into Philadelphia, PA, list on the net. Age 26 years, Married to Regina Ziegler (information just from the net), children born in Lancaster, PA, member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, most likley a German Family. His son Valentine arrived in Rockingham Co. VA by 1782. This family would mix with the Koontz family and as it as turn out Maria Koontz Arrington who was my distant Shipp cousin we are also Wolf cousin.

SHIPP: John Frederick born 1719 died c1789 in Philadelphia, PA arrived in ship "Molly" in Oct 1741. This list is on line. His son, I belive, removed directly to Emmitsburg, MD most likely as soon as 1770. A Godfrey Shipp died in this location by 1782. I am beginning to think a Uncle of my Godfrey Shipp. My oldest known fully documented Godfrey Shipp born 1785 most likely in MD, married in Emmitsburg, Frederick Co. MD removed down to Shenandoah Co. VA by 1810. In Ralph D. Shipp of CO "The Shipp Family Genealogy", my and Maria K. Arrington's groups of Shipp included in his book as "Unassigned Branches" of the descendants of Wm. Shipp of early VA. They do not belong in his book at all. I believe she died without knowning her oldest known Shipp ancestor Wm. was a son of Godfrey Shipp Sr. who was the father of my John Shipp.

SNYDER: Sarah E. born either 1837 or 1840, died Morganfield, Union Co. KY, believe buried next to her husband with his second wife. I have five orginial documents giving me five different birth places for her. These locations could be the path her family took getting to Union Co. KY. Marriage record she was born in IN, census born in OH, last locations given on her children's death records: Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. OH, Germantown, PA & Ohio Co. KY.

This project will take a good long time. If the reader has surnames they want me to look for, that information will be only posted here. So others can "share" the information. The price of me spending my time and monies, you will have to submit a D.N.A. sample through Family Tree DNA (both male & female tests) and make the results known here so others can share that information. Genealogy is "SHARING" or so I have been told.

Any Snyder Researcher (various spelling) who has not send in a sample to them, is really wasting his time and money.

Haplogroup include the letter "R", "I", "E", "T" & "G", so various families in US same name not related.

I am interested in the groups who lived in PA and moved into OH.

I think I am interested in a man named Jacob Schneider (later Snyder) who removed with his brother Hans (Johann Schneider) who was born in Geneva Switzerland Dec 1687. The above Jacob lived to the age of 97 in Germantown, PA.

The first census, 1810 & 1820 shows about five heads of household for the above location, I am interested in a Daniel living in 1820 in Germantown, PA, but in 1830 living in Hamilton Co. OH in Symmes not listed in 1840 in that location. If the information found in various family documents are correct need to find him moving down into Ohio Co. KY. I believe my Sarah E. Snyder was an orphan or living for the 1850 in household of Rev. Wm. Allen of Henderson Co. KY. This county next to Union Co. KY where Sarah E. married G.G. Hopgood.

Time will tell, but my finding out my Shipp were in fact German has help in my Snyder research which was really at a "Brick Wall".

George G. Hopgood & Sarah E. Snyder had five children: Minni C., George Allen, Augustine G., Henry H. & Ida Kate Hopgood, looking at the census information three of her children reported mother born in PA, one IN and one KY (my H.H. Hopgood who in marriage records stated near Cincinnati, OH).

Hope the three are right, because I know where I need to look for her birth being report. I still think most likely she was born in OH.

I big part of my Snyder puzzel has been solved. I have the marriage licence of my George G. Hopgood & Sarah E. Snyder they were married by Wm. G. Allen on 2 Jul 1862.

The first census I knew in the past I found her was as a married woman on 1870 Union Co. KY. I can't find her on the 1860 census. For the 1850 Henderson Co. KY census a Sarah Snyder was living with Rev. Wm. G. Allen (Presbyterian Minister) & his wife and family.

I thought she was an orphan and this was my Sarah E. Snyder now I know for sure.

Wm. G. Allen was born in KY and now I need to figure out when and why she came to live in his household. Said Sarah lived with them most likley for 12 years. Were the related in some matter or just as a minister took in orphans.

She did name one of her sons: George Allen Hopgoood.

Sarah Snyder was living with the household of Rev. Wm. G. Allen, her age given as 12 years born in IA.

Personally I think the location is undreadable, but Ancestry.com, L.D.S. labs and compiled book for Henderson Co. KY has the location as IA.

I really do not think this sixth location of the birth place of Sarah Snyder is correct, but until I learn her father's name will I be able to learn where the Snyder Family was living about c1836 to 1841.

Since the above Rev. Wm. G. Allen was married in 1844 to Ann Green, most likely Sarah came to live with them after 1844 and her parents died before 1850 census. There are no Snyder/Snider living in the area in 1850, except for said Sarah Snyder.

I have found under Ancestry.com they have posted the Y marker results by surname under the name of the person supplying the sample. My 1st cousin once removed James F. HOPGOOD as tested out as I 1 a.

He has recently published a book called "The Descendants of William Hopgood of Union Co. KY". In his book he has the Hopgood Family coming into that location by way of Berkeley Co. VA (now WV) original PA. In short, a Northern Family.

Berkeley Co. VA (now WV) was formed from Frederick Co. VA. I have compiled into book form land deeds & wills and have not found surname Hopgood in that area of VA. I will be looking into the same counties in MD & PA as I am going through looking for Snider & Shipp.

My theory still stands that they were the same group of Hobgood who removed west from Norfolk Co. VA into Granville Co. NC, then some removed to Hopkins Co. KY my group into Union Co. KY by c1820. One of the members of Hobgood/Hopgood married into the Cozart family of Granville Co. NC. That family appears in the charts of O.O. (King) Hopgood.

DNA can solve this problem to see if other Hopgood who have documented they family living in Norfolk Co. VA or parts of NC match the Y marker of the ones living in Union Co. KY.

Time will well.

Since George G. Hopgood & Sarah E. Snyder were married in the house of Gabe Green in Morganfield, Union Co. KY, I want to see if I would find a connection with the couple.

Gabriel Green was living in Henderson Co. KY for the 1850 census, which peaked my interest. He moved to Union Co. KY for later census. His wife Frances L. on the census born 1830 said IA (like Sarah Snyder) but later census stated she was born in IN. I wanted her maiden name to be Snyder, but her name was Frances Price Stinson born in IN.

Above couple were married in Vanderburgh Co. IN on 22 Apr 1851, right across the river from Henderson Co. KY.

So I think Ancestory, com. & L.D.S. labs has it wrong on the 1850 census should read Sarah was born in IN not IA.

If we can believe the information found in Ancestory.com computer bank, the above Gabriel Green was a descendant of Robert Mackay's partner Robert Green (nephew of Wm. Duff) of VA. Small World !!

This book by Strassburge & Hinkle could now be on line, gives information about Germans coming into the colonies after 1717. Each ship as three lists: List A passengers on the ship, List B passengers who arrived at the port, List C male passengers over 16 years of age required to take an oath at court house in Philadelphia, PA.

Our Sowers the surname given as Sauer, Saur, Sour, Souer or Sower, no Jacob given. He could have been arrived before 1717 or his father was the emigrate coming over with him.

There were many Haas, no Ridenour listed.

Found on ship "Patience" Cap. John Brown 16 Sep 1748

Yerick Baltus Heifelbower age 24 and Philip Heifelbower 30 years of age.

Most likely a listing of all the passenger on this particular ship can be found on line.

Rev. Wm. G. Allen's wife Sarah Ann was the daughter of Gabriel Green who had a number of children. The house of Gabe Green that my ancestors George G. Hopgood & Sarah E. Snyder were married was the brother of said Sarah Ann (Green) Allen.

Still I have failed to figure out if the Snyder & Green families were related.

I am interested in the Green Family of Henderson Co. KY, because Rev. Wm. G. Allen & his wife Sarah Ann (was a member of Green Family) and they took in as an orphan my ancestress Sarah E. Snyder. And in 1862 she was married by said Rev. to George G. Hopgood in the house of Gabriel Green. He and said Sarah E. were siblings.

I have no idea if the above Fanny Green is related to this family or not. I found this item rather interesting. L.D.S. 0572577 "Henderson Co. KY Land Deeds" Book K, page 77. Dated 24th Jul 1843, proven 24th Jul 1843

"Know all men by these present that I Daniel McBride of the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky have manumitted, emancipated, and set free and do by these present forever Emancipate, manumit and set free my negro girl slave named Fanny Green who was born the 3rd day of December 1832, daughter of my negro woman slave named Milly and Fanny Green is very white with blue eyes, yellow hair a little tinged with red of slender form and from her personal appearance a stranger could not discover any trace or marks of negro blood about her. And the said Fanny Green is henceforth released from all manner of involuntary servitude or obligations to render labour to me or any other person as a slave and is to be entitled to all the rights, privileges and immunities of a free person of color--In testimony where of I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 24th day of July 1843
D. McBride "

It was recorded by Wm. D. Allison CC on 24th Jul 1843
