Anything relating to families on my mom's side which you'll likely find in Shenandoah County, Mumaw, Jenkins & Ritenour etc.
Maumaw I have found in Frederick Co. MD and I might run into them researching my Shipp family later this month or next month.

It might turn out they came from the same location as the Shipp in Germany.

I have also found Balsar Sower/Saucer in Frederick Co. Maryland, the later shows up in Shenandoah Co. VA.

Ridenour I thought was connected with my Shipp family in some matter.

What particular couple and marriage are you looking?

Glad to see you have updated your Smith page.

I'm still working on updating the Smith side. Still have more records to add.

Looking at the info. it still doesn't appear to me that John West was the father of Rachel's children simply because of Brownie's record. The other kids weren't born yet but he is listed as 'Brownie Smith' and his death was reported by his mother Rachel Smith. So, the question is what happened to John West between the years 1874 when they got married and 1882-1885, the lifetime of Brownie Smith?

If John West, just died before the birth of Brownie, then I would think Rachel would be using his name. Than to take back her maiden name. I thought the record was signed by the minister, so the marriage did take place.

I looked for divorce records from Rockbridge, but they are listed through State of VA film list. I do not know if you could find those records elsewhere.

If you could find Rachel's grave and get her death year, then you could write to State of VA for her death record. That records should state the names of her parents and martial status.

I guess it would be a very long shot to see the D.N.A. profiles of her two sons. But perhaps you will get lucky.

This item is from the Borden's Marriage Book for Shenandoah Co. VA. I just happen to copy the marriage entry because it was on the same page as Bridges family.

"Samuel Arthur Ryan to Rebecca Ellen Mumaw, on 29 May 1904, by Charles Nesselrodt. Page 78, line 48. Married in Shenandoah Co. VA. The groom was 23, single, a farmer, born in and residing in Shenandoah Co. Va and the son of Ephraim and Sarah Ryan. The bride was 26, divorced, born in and residing in Shenandoah Co. VA, and the daughter of J.J. and Louisa V. Mumaw. (Samuel A. Rayn 31 Jan 1881-10 May 1956 and his wife Rebecca E. Ryan 29 Aug 1876-20 Apr 1958. Both are buried in St. Paul's Luthern Church Cemetery at Jerome, Shenandoah Co. VA at the juncture of roads 701 and 717)"

What interested me was that she was divorced and it would appear took back her maiden name. So happens your Rachel Smith did the same thing.

I do not known when the State of VA allowed divorce.

Index to the actual records on one group of film and then you can order the records on film through your local library and get copies of the death record.

So it looks like I will have lots of new records to view.

I can only order five films at a time and I have five in the pipe line already. Then I want to order Shenandoah Co. VA Marriage Records.

I might put this project first.

1. Priscilla Ann (Bridges) Shipp died about c1920, so I want to see her name on the index. She is not buried next to her husband, but I think she was buried next to her husband and the family did not pay to mark her name on the grave stone already in place.

2. George H. Sowers died 1919

3. Bushrod P. Edwards died 1919

4. My grandfather W.E. Shipp had four siblings who died as infants, might to to late to have their names included.

I will place a posting when I order this new film.

I know it's probably too late to look up anything on the marriage records you posted about on this thread but I was wondering if you could find info. on my Ritenour family. I have several Ritenour obituaries that at present I cannot place and would like to transcribe them to the website with their genealogy connections.

No that film has not come in, so if you have a particular person or family group (like I found in connection with Rachel E. Smith) I can keep an eye out for them.

Jeanette Conner Ritenour work with Duane L. Borden with his various books dealing with Shenandoah & Rockingham etc....area. Is she or was she part of your family group? The two volumes by Borden for Shenandoah Co. VA Marriages down to 1916 ( or 1913) are at the public library. I think I will be going there Thursday afternoon.

The later Page Co. VA Marriages I will be getting off the film, which I need to know of while the film is in.

I will not be ordering the index to VA Death Certificate most likely at the end of the month. Those films, Michael, you should be able to order through Handley Library. Does the Handley Library have a link to Heritage Quest?. From Fairfax Public Library Site they have a link to the HQ and I have pull off a wealth of information from the census and taking that information and matching it with other vital records: birth, marriages & deaths.

I will try to see if I can find Rachel E. Smith death certificate, should be on that film. Death after 1939 just indexed no certificate on film. So I do not think will be helpful for her children.
