Because of the sharing of researcher Mrs. Goodwin I can check the sites of Donald Derryberry & Guy Derryberry.

Donald Derryberry (was to be my closer distant cousin) his line from Thomas Derryberry of Henderson Co. TN. He shares only on #2 10.32 with Terry Derryberry is line from Jacob Derryberry of Henderson Co. TN. He showing no match with Guy or Bob Derryberry. From what I have seen this amount shows little DNA share between Donald & Terry Derryberry.

Guy Derryberry shares with Bob Derryberry from the line of Adam Derryberry of Maury Co. TN. His line stayed in that county and did not live where my line lived in Henderson Co. TN. They share on #3 53.7 which is a good amount. But the question is it Derryberry DNA that they are sharing?

Guy has a strange entry of Walter Hopgood who I do not know who he is and he does not show up on my site. Connie B. Holmes small bit of DNA on #5 and Lavonna R. Holmes #20 bit more. None of these Holmes woman show up on my site.
Hi,

I'm trying to get in touch with Dee Ann Buck.

I'll try to brief. I'm trying to get past my most distant known paternal ancestor, William Macklin Fortune (1824?-1869) of Richmond, VA, married to Margaret Bowen(Bowman) (1826-1866). I've confirmed through paper trail and DNA Matching that my existing 3rd cousins trace back to both of them.

My FTDNA Kit is # 636960. It is can be seen on the Fortune Surname Project at FTDNA, and the Walden Surname Project.

My GEDMatch ID: T441560

ysearch: 7QK27

I saw that you had a connection to Fortune, Derryberry, Stith, and Melton. I have a distant match to Guy Derryberry. Historically, my dad's always knew there was a connection to the Melton Family because his middle name was Milton (used to be Melton - became Milton thanks to vital records). His dad also had the middle name of Milton(Melton). I also seen distant matches to families that trace back to Burke and Rutherford, NC.

I have no paper trail of these ggg grandparents beyond 1847. I know Margaret's mother was Nancy Bowen/Bowman(1803-1880).
None of the cousins I know from Richmond, VA have any solid paper trail either. My dad said family lore was that his line had lived in Virginia since colonial period, and there was a rumor of a male adoption. My dad is deceased. The trail stops in 1847.

I was wondering if you could compare dna results at GEDMatch and ysearch for the male in your family descended from Nicholas.

Thanks!

Bottom line you want to know the ancestry of your Wm. Macklin Fortune married to Margaret. You must find out if her maiden name was Bowen or Bowman different families. I do not have a direct answer for you, but I really do not think your line is the same as my Fortune Family.

I am glad to see your posting, for it has years since I check over my Fortune Family information. I have been collecting documents for 37 years. In the 1990's I had exchanged information about my Fortune and Melton Families with about 20 different people. All this BEFORE DNA. All the people I worked with we knew we were from the same line started by John Fortune who died in Albermarle Co. VA. My line removed from this location to Rutherford Co. NC then to Henderson Co. TN.

I believe Nicholas Fortune ( I do not see if it is listed with Family Tree DNA) was not from my direct line. Thomas Fortune was my 8th gr-grandfather. My Amanda E. Melton (I have supplied her mtDNA) was my 2nd gr-grandmother she had the Fortune and triple line of Melton.

Since, you are a member of Family Tree DNA you will have to write the web master and see if descends of Thomas Fortune of Caroline Co. VA have supplied a sample. I know of none of the family of Amanda E. Melton have done so linked with her Melton or Fortune have supplied a sample. I do have a Y marker linked with her Morris Family.

LOCATION, LOCATION AND LOCATION: since your family were living in Richmond, VA, I really do not see a link between my Fortune nor Melton Families. Check the Family Tree DNA for Melton and there are lots and lots of different families using the same name. You should look for a group living in Richmond, VA area. As far as I know my group did not live in that location.

My DNA sample found on Ancestry Finder, Family Tree DNA (as well as my 2 sons and husband) and 23 & Me.

As far as Guy Faye Derryberry he shows match with you #18 10.12. Since he is a very willing researcher he gave me his kit # and password. I update his kit to include his mtDNA which goes back to Quaker MM in Northern Ireland. I can tell you a lot about his various families on his chart (posted to my tree on Ancestry) and I do not see links with any Melton Family. Only one couple I have not found pass 1825 Joe Reed and his wife Deltha Fuller. If I could really find where you link up with him I could post your couple on my tree and wait for Ancestry "Green Leafs" to pop up.

In closing, I started doing genealogy after the birth of my first son Travis in 1980. At that time, we did not have on line records, we went to the library and read film on readers and exchange by US Post letters with others to further our mutual quest to find our ancestors.

Now with genealogy done on line, people just copy records which could be right or wrong. I have found most people rather have the wrong information on their tree than to have nothing. Now we have DNA I want to personally confirm my paper documentation with DNA. But getting people to exchange this important information they rather not go to the expense or trouble. It is easier for them just to copy information from other trees. Or perhaps they might find out they are really not who they think they are.

See,

That's exactly what I'm trying to find out. The parentage of William Macklin Fortune and his wife Margaret. Her name appears as Bowen and sometimes Bowman. Her mother outlived her and I need to track down the fortune grandchildren she lived with from 1869 to about 1880. Maybe they have information that isn't public.

I agree with you about the copying of information without any second thought. I've seen lots of misleading information and some things sourced incorrectly that are just not true.

I have a good picture of my maternal grand fathers line. I'm behind on my maternal grandmother's and can only trace back about 4 generations. My paternal grandmothers line is fairly well known. I can trace everyone on my fathers side about 5-6 generations or to a point of entry to the USA. But it stops cold with Wm Macklin Fortune.

There are other Fortune lines I've eliminated from my list like the ones from SC in 1700s. The ones that enter through Pennsylvania, etc.

My big challenge is a lack of documentation. I can't even begin to guess my connection to Guy Derryberry. Do you know a Heather Buck?

Through DNA matching I see connections to families in the same county as fortunes in the right years but I don't have a paper trail to understand why. It could be an entirely different connection than I'm imagining. And imagination isn't proof. So we keep going back to look at Richmond area to see what clue we missed. I also know where the present Thomas Fortune line resides in Virginia. That's been common knowledge in the family for years but no contact. I'm also looking for ydna testers for William Fortune sr and his son William bill Fortune jr, who married a Melton , but was executed in 1822.

Thank you so much for your reply and your suggestions. I see I have much more RESEARCH to do.

I'll let you know what I find out. I'll pop in from time to time. As I get more info I'd like to maintain email contact.

Wm. Fortune Sr. received pension for his military service, his son Wm. Jr. hanged for murdering his second wife, I descend from his first wife. This is my Melton and Fortune line.

Heather Buck alive or dead?

Lots and lots of different Buck Families. My husband was German originally Bock. The Buck Family of Warren Co. VA that intermarried with my McKay, Branson and Lehew English from Matthew Co. VA early into the Valley.

Many different Buck settled in PA no relation with above Buck Families.

Other question, post them here. Will see what I can do for you.

William Fortune Jr. was hanged for shooting his wife (Clarissey Smelly) in the back has she was working in the kitchen. I have seen expenses for his cost for his jail time. People in those days paid the county for all cost in connection with jail time.

I descend from his first wife Sarah Melton.

Thanks for that information. Finding a documentation trail for Wm Macklin Fortune has been difficult using the available online sources. I'm using the DNA results to try to find other cousins that might have information or not. So far , I feel I've been rather successful at eliminating false leads and bad research. The next step is for my brother and I ito start looking into local records in the Richmond, Va area and local counties (Henrico, Chesterfield, Caroline, etc)..

I'm more confident that his Wm Macklin Fortune's wife's name went from Bowman to Bowen based on scant records I've found. It's probably time to investigate what Chesterfield county and old Manchester of Richmond has lurking in their courthouses.

It's incredibly helpful having someone with tons of experience to brainstorm with.

I would say check personal tax list for the areas you might think your family lived. L.D.S. catalog has Chesterfield and Henrico Co. VA tax and land deeds, but they are not on line you would have to order the film and read it at one of their Family History Centers.

Sometime Ancestry might offer these tax list through them.

If you live in the State of VA or your local library might have an agreement with Richmond, VA you can order these same films through them.

Only a fraction of the really good material are on line and indexed for researchers.

State of VA does have Chancery Suit on line I do not know if Chesterfield and Henrico Co. VA are offered.

Good luck with your research.

So no one in my immediate family has DNA tested yet. I'm going to have my mother test and my dad's brother who is still alive so I can get that extra generation back for testing.

My two closest matches so far at ftdna and gedmatch are a paternal 3rd cousin descendant of the Wm Fortune and his wife Margaret and then a set of cousins on my mothers side who are predicted as 2&3rd cousins but are actually 7 generations back. We share the same two ancestors from two lines. We then have two different sets of grandparents with descent from the same lines so the same DNA segments got carried forward. So it makes look like we are more rrecently related then we really are. What's really neat is the DNA test confirms the research done by members of that side of the family.

Do you if there is are Virginia registry or county registries of lawyers from them mid 1800s?

Look at the entry "Encyclopedia VA" www.encyclopeidavirginia.org Has listing of colonial lawyer in VA. When I need to find things like this I just "Google It"

Later census will have as occupation "Lawyers" I do not know if occupations are indexed.

I do not see entries for occupation among films offered by State of VA or L.D.S. films.
