Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to exchange information directly with the late Harold Jean Bolen of GA. And I would have asked some direct & hard questions.
Our common ancestors were Reeves Bolen & Durainey Carrington. He descended from his eldest son John W. Bolen and my great-grandmother Dessie G. Bolen from his youngest son Sion M. Bolen.
When I first started to collect information about my great-grandmother Dessie Green Bolen I ran into his material:that the Bolen of Henderson Co. TN were descendants of the Bolling of VA (descendants of Pocahontas). As another researcher told me "he so wanted to be related Pocahontas that he just made up material about the family in North Carolina down from VA." The "Professional Genealogist" who he had hired stopped supplying him material when he saw him twisting, changing, deleting etc....material which did not fit with what he wanted to believe.
There are a lot of other researches (mostly living in the South) who have also supplied materials to others trying to connect their Bowling, Bolen etc...to the Bolling family of VA. The Collection of Papers called "Phelps Works" you can order all on film through L.D.S. library.
Well we now have D.N.A test and the Bolling family of VA has a rather large project collecting samples. I do not know if any of my male Bolen have been tested, but I am sure they are not related to the group that H.J. Bolen has spread information. Most likely they came down from MD into Granville Co. NC.
His materials show up in local newspapers and into others personal libraries. He was going to publish his works, but died before it could be completed, called "A Family History 1476-1976"
I realize it is not good to "speak ill of the dead", but he wasted a lot of my time and money collecting information about the Bolling of VA. Why should I sit by and let others waste their time & money as well.
My cousin from TN send me some picture of the Bolen of Henderson Co. TN that belong to the descendants of John W. Bolen and some could have had "non-white" blood lines, but they would not have been from Pocahontas !!! Perhaps in the future Mitochondrial DNA test might shed light on this mytery.
My great-grandmother Dessie Green Bolen belongs to Group 3 Bolling DNA Site. The number patten set: R1b1: 13,24,14,11,11,12,12,12,13,13,13,29. Her emigrate ancestor found on Todd Bolen "The Bolling, Bowling,Bolen Family" page 243 Fh 751.
I will in the future be seeking out paper documents and DNA matches with families that once lived in Somerset Co. MD. Here is what I have now on the first six generations:
1. William Bowland--THE EMIGRATE--b. c1645 BG (do not know location) d. after 1711 Somerset Co. MD. Wife first name Elizabeth. Her arrival to Maryland 1666 listed as Elizabeth Bowland. Therefore I am assumed married somewhere in England. Wm. Bowland named in the will of Wm. Hill dated 1715 filed in Somerset Co. MD "Elizabeth daughter of Wm. Bouland and Margaret daughter of Thomas Pollet. I believe this Wm. Hill was the brother of said Elizabeth who married Wm. Bowland. Need to find DNA matches with Pollet researchers. Children: Elizabeth and Wm.
2. William Bowland b. c1680 Manokin Hundred, Somerset Co. MD, d. 1735 his will on file, m. Eleanor Olandman who died 1741. She daughter of Denum. Their children: Wm., James , Elizabeth and Sarah. Will seek out future matches.
3. William Bowland b. c1718 (called eldest minor child in father's will), d. 1765 Somerset Co. MD or Granville Co. NC, m. Elizabeth..........? have DNA matches with BAXTER researchers. Children: John, Eliabeth, James, BAXTER and Benj. I have DNA matches with lines of John, Baxter and Benj. Last group of researchers gave so many Y marker test Group 3 is also called Benjamin Bolen Group.
4. John Bowling b. c1738 Somerset Co. MD, d. 1814 Granville Co. NC m. Elizabeth........? made her mark with "E" seeking our surnames Manning and Britton (have DNA matches with both). They removed down to Granville Co. NC, hope to find their marks in that location, found in Granville Co. NC they removed to York Co. SC where they settled their younger children, he removed back to Granville Co. NC where he died. Children: John, Wm. Thomas, Orderly, Benj., Manning, Mary Viana, Thomas, Elizabeth and Britton. I have DNA matches with: John, Wm. Thomas, Benj., Manning and Thomas.
5. John Bowling b.1755 MD, d. c1839 Granville Co. NC m. Aug 1790 Granville Co. NC Martha Mangum. Burial Bowling Mountain in Durham Co. NC. Children: Willis, Elvey, Polly, Riley, Yancy, Joseph, Josephine, Sarah, Martha, John and Reeves. I have DNA matches with Willis, Yancy, Joseph and Reeves. I think I will find in the pedigree charts of Reeves: Willis, Riley, Yancy and Reeves (double line on Martha's side).
6. Reeves Bolen b. 1 Dec 1818 Granville Co. NC d. 1864 Henderson Co. TN, burial Carrington Family Cemetery, Pleasant Exchange, Henderson Co. TN. Had a paper statement that Reeves Bolen took trips back to NC from TN to visit "cousin" Lucy Clark. I have DNA matches with her descends. Children: John Wiley (supplied Y marker), Lareny, Aeriadna Josephine, Martha Jemima and Sion Monroe. I have DNA matches with John W., A.J. and S.M. Bolen.
My family Kellum found on different branch of my family lived in Somerset Co. MD and also removed down to Granville Co. NC. One thing I have seen with this branch of my family if they named a child with first name that looks like a surname, I can find that surname somewhere on my chart. With DNA matches now I can rule in or out a certain name.
