DNA as turn another one of my family history on its head.

My grandfather Roy D. Hopgood's family it appears lived for a time in Bucks Co. PA (assuming they originally came from England), spend time in Berkeley Co. VA, then Bucks Co. PA and went down the Ohio River to Union Co. KY by 1820 census.

You can go to Y Search and my cousin James F. Hopgood's DNA pattern on file and another sample can be found from HOBGOOD. They are not even a close match. My uncle Earl H. Hopgood also has a sample, but he has not shared that information with me.

The founding father of HOBGOOD-- Thomas Hobgood of early Norfolk Co. VA his will on file. One of his grandson removed down to Granville Co. NC. One of these men named Thomas married a Cozart woman (also found in my mother mother family) they removed to Hopkins Co. KY. Always using the surname Hobgood. There is a small town in Granville Co. NC called Hobgood. One of my Hopgood cousin took his picture, thinking he being a cousin.

These are two different families and modern researchers just thought clerks are mixing together a "b" with "p".

I also think that the parentage of my Daniel Hopgood born 1788 VA will be found in Bucks Co. PA. I think the Wm. Hopgood who died in Union Co. KY most likely elder brother of said Daniel. Time will tell.
At least 11 researchers kits show common DNA material. A number of researcher's results were private so their could be more. I know a few on found on Family Tree DNA.

At least one reseacher takes the family back into England three more generations. Since no documentation is found I will start with my known ancestor:

1. John Rudd b. c1678 some say Yorkshire, England, d. 1749 Chestfield Co. VA. Wife Avis Whitaker. Some have listed her parentage, again no documentation given?

2. Joseph Rudd b. c1712 Henrico Co. VA, d. 1779 Mecklinburg Co. VA, Wife Wilmouth..........?

3. Wm. Rudd b. c1751 Mecklenburg Co. VA, d. c1779 same location, wife name unknown to me.

4. Wm. Henry Rudd b. 1772 Mecklenburg Co. VA, d. 1853 Warren Co. NC, Wife Sarah.........? name from land deed, another wife mentioned in his will to be buried by his wife Emily Thomas.

5. John D./Elijah D. Rudd b. 1805 Granville Co. NC, d. c1868 Morganfield, Union Co.KY m-2 Nancy Rogers. I believe to escape his creditors in NC he removed to KY and changed his first name from John to Elijah. All three of his marriage records found in NC as John D. For the 1850 census who will find his children were living in different household than with him. Guess a matter of money.

6. Samuel Alexander Rudd b. 14 Feb 1837, d. 8 Jul 1882 Morganfield, Union Co. KY, Wife Mary Ann Taylor, their graves on "Fine a Grave". I have a picture of her

7. Alice/Allie Rudd b. 29 Sep 1867 Morganfield, Union Co.KY, d. 24 Jul 1947 East Prairie, Mississippi Co. MO, Husband Henry H. Hopgood.

These were my gr-grandparents. Line back 10 generations.

Researcher on Ancestry DNA site "chsyles20" ancestors were Joshua Howard & Joanna O'Carroll of early Baltimore, MD. This cousinship goes back 10 generations.

I have had several matches with Gist surname, so that line is solid all the way down to me. I have found one Murray researcher who also matches with me and now another family marrying into the Gist family this Howard. I have confirmed two blood lines coming into that branch of the family.

People have placed on line that Christopher Gist was a member of The Washington Family of VA, back in England. I have really found no evidence that is true. The odds of finding a researcher who decends from that family in England, I do not think possible.

His wife Edith Cromwell, people have linked her to Oliver Cromwell. I do not think the evidence is presented with their pedigree charts.

This proven line:

1. Joshua Howard b. 1665 Manchester, England, d. 1738 Baltimore, MD m. 1686 Baltimore, MD to Joanna O'Carroll born c1668 Ireland, d. 1763 Baltimore, MD. The other researcher through their son Henry Howard

2. Mary Howard b. 1712 Baltimore, MD, d. 1755 NC m. Nathaniel Gist. There is a Y study dealing with this family on Family Tree DNA. Many people have joined DAR with this family.

3. Joshua Gist b. Baltimore, MD, d. c1811 Henderson Co. KY married Elizabeth Kellam, have sheets on this surname to do.
He was at "The Battle of Kings's Mountain". With a couple of cousins and uncle.

4. Nathaniel Gist b. c1785 Greene Co. NC, d. 1843 Morganfield, Union Co. KY. Married Patsy Brooks

5. Nancy Gist b. 24 Sep 1818 Morganfield, Union Co. KY, d. 29 Jul 1879 same location, married Aaron Taylor

6. Mary Ann Taylor b. 11 Nov 1838, d. 25 Nov 1926 Morganfield, Union Co. VA, married Samuel A. Rudd

7. Alice/Allie Rudd b. 29 Sep 1867 Morganfield, Union Co. KY, d. 24 Jul 1947 Mississipppi Co. MO married Henry H. Hopgood

8. Roy D. Hopgood m. Olive O. King

9. Patsy D. Hopgood m. R.E. Shipp

10. Dee Ann Shipp (me) m. Irvin P. Buck Jr.
It has been a fond held belief by many Gist researchers that Christopher Gist's mother was Ann Washington and related to the family of the first president.

And that his wife Edith was a decend of Oliver Cromwell. I have no idea why someone would want to be his descend !! But not a problem. She was a member of entirely different family.

1. John Crumwell b. c1580 Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England m. 21 Nov 1619 St. Mary's Church of Wiltshire, England to Edith Gamboll, d. 1639 Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England. His death recorded on parish registry. His will named family members. Some removed to MA and my line to MD.

2. Richard Cromwell b. 1618 (twin to brother Thomas) Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England, d. Baltimore, MD, m. Elizabeth. You will find on "Fine a Grave" records of these two brothers.

3. Edith Cromwell b. c1660 still looking for the location, m. c1679 still looking for location to Christopher Gist, imgrated to MD 1679, d. 1694 Balitmore, MD.

I have several Autosomal Matches with others who descend from Gist & Cromwell couples.

My grandmother King has the same Rust ancestry that some of our Rust/McKay cousin have back to Wm. Rust of early Westmoreland Co. VA.

The book by the late Elwood Rust has some incorrect information in it which I picked up. I thought I had a doubt line of Rust which I now know is not true.

Another researcher "straighten me out" which I am glad he did for Sarah Cox of early Westmoreland Co. VA has some interesting blood lines. Vincent Cox of early Westmoreland Co. VA came from Kempston, Bedforshire, England. Peter Presly & Elizabeth Thompson of early Northampton Co. VA. Thomas Lamkin of Kemptson, Bedford, England & his wife Eleanor........? died Westmoreland Co. VA. Jane Ashton of early Westmoreland Co. VA daughter of Charles Ashton & Margaret Hart. I believe her grandfather Abraham Field had his plantation on Pope Creek near the Washington Plantation.

All lived in early Westmoreland Co. VA which means I only have to read records in that one location for about six different families. I hope my Morris family lived in the same area, but I have not found the necessary records filed in Orange Co. NC.
Just logged into today on Ancestry DNA a researcher dskrams950 is granddaughter (I believe) of Nolie E. King who was the sister of my great-grandfather Joseph H. King. They being the children of Hansford D. King.

She would be my 2nd cousin one removed. She would be the closest distant cousin, so far, except for James F. Hopgood.

With all these 1000's of matches I have received through Ancestry DNA & Family Tree DNA I really do not understand people saying they have taken the test and received no matches or little information.

Dee Ann,
I am continuing my search to connect John James Morris to James G. Morris to Elizabeth and Isaac Morris but have not made any headway. I believe Robert Reed Morris is following the same line. I am trying to contact him but I don't have a current email. If you have a current email could you share it with me or you could just send him an email with my email address.
thank you for your help,
cathey
My DNA profile on both Ancestry DNA and Family Tree DNA. I am descend of said Isaac Morris & Elizabeth Brown, she is my Mitochondrial blood line.

I have found one researcher who posted the wrong Morris to our group. There has never been Isaac F. Morris linked to this group of Morris in NC or TN.

The information given to me by Reed Morris, is that James G. Morris & Mahala Benson: Wiley, Eliza A., John James, Thomas, Jasper, Almidia, Sarah & Chaney.

Found on 1850 & 1860 Henderson Co. TN census. All you have to do is turn in DNA Autosomal test and you will receive your answer if you are related to Isaac Morris & Elizabeth Brown.

Very simple task.

Part of my research is to find all Haplogroup found on my pedigree charts, not a easy task.

Thanks to the effort of a distant cousin Guy Derryberry, he found my distant cousin Donald Derryberry who also descends from Thomas Derryberry of Henderson Co. TN who took the DNA test.

You can find the same pattern of numbers on Y-Search under Andy Lynn Derryberry's (line of Adam) numbers the same as Guy Derryberry (line of Michael-- his not public) & Donald Derryberry (line of Thomas his not public).

R1b1a2 13,22,15,10,11,14,12,12,11,13,13,28

You can find the rest of the number on Y-Search

The emigrate ancestor was Hans Michael Torenberger arrived 1738 in the boat "Robert & Oliver" (another source said "Robert & Alice").

One place in PA given as his residence Lehigh Co. PA (formed from Northampton Co. PA in 1812).

I have already viewed tax list for Northampton and I have not found said Hans Michael. I will be ordering film dealing with Philadelphia Co. PA for my Schipp/Ships will see if I can find him in that location.

Hans Michael would have arrived about the same time and perhaps the same location as my John Frederick Schipp.

Bob Derryberry's book is free on line, through L.D.S. library. I did not know he was going to print various theories I and others thought as to the beginnings of the family in US.

Others have taken his theories and spun them into fact.

In the olden days of Genealogy when you exchange paper information with another researcher, if you found out something was wrong, you knew where to send the corrections.

But now with information on line, there is no chance to correct or delete wrong information. People would rather hold on to bad information than to have nothing at all. They do not know how to use their delete key.

All of these opinions, theories, believes, thoughts were BEFORE DNA and only one piece of information I found and passed to Audria Massey was correct. The family was German and came into NC from NJ. Ancestry has a number of the early tax list on line for various counties of NJ.

The Y markers for four Derryberry men show the family came from a German family. The results are public on Family Tree DNA. And their and mine Autosomal samples filed Family Tree DNA. Which I might add I do not match.

However, you will find spread over the Ancestry and Personal Web Page all these wrong theories as fact.

The Derryberry were not French or English, but German. I love it when people state they have done their research and what they say is true. Then I know what they are saying was just mine and Audria old unproven opinions. I have been at this for 30 years!!

Since, DNA I have to deal with the fact my E.H. Derryberry does not share DNA material with four known Derryberry men.
Should I keep silence or tell others?. I have decided the honest thing to do is to go public on the issue. Now, others want to continue to research the Derryberry of Henderson Co. TN and beyond, go right head. But when you find out what I am saying is true and you have wasted your time, remember my caution about his parentage.

Found L.D.S. #306947 Orange Co. NC deed & minute books only date given 1817 for the above case. I do not think the Isaac Morris is my direct ancestor.

Jury finding Issac Morris guilty in "the bill of instrument" The record does not say what he was charged with "taken to the public whipping post 39 lashes on his bare back and cost of 100 pounds fee & cost".

This film is full of others in Orange Co. NC also whipped & fined for having "unlawful relations" resulting in children born "out of wedlock". I do not know if this is the case with Isaac Morris, or he did something else.

My Isaac Morris it is said was in TN in by this time, however the dates are not applied to each case file, just what was done each year.

There was a Isaac Morris who married in Orange Co. NC on 8th Jan 1812 to Nancy CHEEK. And I do not know if or how he is related to my group of Morris/Brown of Orange Co. NC.

Members of our McKay family married into the Cheek family, perhaps others know who this Isaac Morris was who was whipped.

With so much new information I am finding with Shipp & Snyder I have not found the time to post information in connection with my Morris & Brown families which I have found months ago.

I have not run Isaac Morris & Elizabeth Brown through Ancestory.com to see whats others have posted.
I do not know how researchers could so mess up my group of Morris living in Orange Co. NC with the surname found in other places in NC like Burke & McDowell.

Henry Morris who died in ORANGE CO. NC by 1801, had wife Frances and three sons

1. Henry Morris died before father, my line John & Isaac (no middle name)

2. Thomas Morris only had one son Thomas and daughters.

3. Richard Morris died before 1820 had the son Isaac who got in trouble with the law. He had three sons and three daughters.

Ancestry as 10 Autosomal DNA samples on file with all confirming their line back to and we descend from different children of said couple Peter & Elizabeth (Fielding) Rucker. I do not believe I have other lines in common with them.

1. Peter Rucker (c1669 Bavaria, Germany-1743 Orange Co. VA) married Elizabeth Fielding.

2. Ann Rucker born c1712 Orange Co. VA m. Shem Cooke

3. Isham Cooke married Ann.........?

4. Nancy Cooke born 1780 NC, d. c1859 Carroll Co. TN married Lemuel Rust. Same Rust family that intermarried with "our" McKay. I have Autosomal matche with a researcher from the VA branch of the family.

5. Dawsey Rust born 1805 Orange Co. NC d. c1850 Carroll Co. TN marired Noah Hampton. His family as several Autosomal Matches on file with Ancestry DNA and Family Tree DNA.

6. Winnie Ridley Hampton b. Apr 1830, d. 19 Jan 1901 Yuma, Carroll Co. TN married first Wm. Presley King. Believe her grave marker can be found on "Fine a Grave".

7. Hansford Duncan King b. 23 Mar 1857, d. 5 May 1927 Yuma, Carroll Co. TN married Fredonia Jane Derryberry. I have Autosomal match with another descend of his grandfather Thomas King. I have several Autosomal matches for Fredonia J. Derryberry's Shipman cousin, but none with Derryberry.

8. Joseph Hulon King b. 21 Jul 1883 Yuma, Carroll Co. TN, d. 23 Jan 1963 Alton, Madison Co. Il married Dessie Green Bolen. I have found many Autosomal Matches for her Bolen, Mangum, Carrington, Cozart (double line), Melton, Fortune, Duke & Reeves. Morris a Y marker and my DNA marker for her Brown ancestry.

Joseph --my great-grandfather down three more generations. I am 11 generation from said Peter Rucker.

Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to exchange information directly with the late Harold Jean Bolen of GA. And I would have asked some direct & hard questions.

Our common ancestors were Reeves Bolen & Durainey Carrington. He descended from his eldest son John W. Bolen and my great-grandmother Dessie G. Bolen from his youngest son Sion M. Bolen.

When I first started to collect information about my great-grandmother Dessie Green Bolen I ran into his material:that the Bolen of Henderson Co. TN were descendants of the Bolling of VA (descendants of Pocahontas). As another researcher told me "he so wanted to be related Pocahontas that he just made up material about the family in North Carolina down from VA." The "Professional Genealogist" who he had hired stopped supplying him material when he saw him twisting, changing, deleting etc....material which did not fit with what he wanted to believe.

There are a lot of other researches (mostly living in the South) who have also supplied materials to others trying to connect their Bowling, Bolen etc...to the Bolling family of VA. The Collection of Papers called "Phelps Works" you can order all on film through L.D.S. library.

Well we now have D.N.A test and the Bolling family of VA has a rather large project collecting samples. I do not know if any of my male Bolen have been tested, but I am sure they are not related to the group that H.J. Bolen has spread information. Most likely they came down from MD into Granville Co. NC.

His materials show up in local newspapers and into others personal libraries. He was going to publish his works, but died before it could be completed, called "A Family History 1476-1976"

I realize it is not good to "speak ill of the dead", but he wasted a lot of my time and money collecting information about the Bolling of VA. Why should I sit by and let others waste their time & money as well.

My cousin from TN send me some picture of the Bolen of Henderson Co. TN that belong to the descendants of John W. Bolen and some could have had "non-white" blood lines, but they would not have been from Pocahontas !!! Perhaps in the future Mitochondrial DNA test might shed light on this mytery.

By third great grandmother Durainey Carrington was 1/4 Reeves. Her grandmother was Sallie Reeves who married on 7 Oct 1786 to Benj. Cozart.

The good news I have many Autosomal matches with Reeves from NC & VA. The bad news I do not know if they have really documented her blood line.

I have found the family living in Amelia Co. VA, while researching the Brown Family of that location. My Bumpass Family also left records in that location.

Found in compiled book dealing with land deed tranfer, dated 23 May 1768 David Neal gives to his two grandchildren Wm. Reeves & Joannah Reeves, son and daughter of Thomas Reeves four slaves: Phillis, Drusillah, Doll & Murrea to have after the death of himself and wife (not named).

Found in Ancestry Tree information Thomas Reeves (1740-1807) married to Eleanor Neal (1739-1768) married 28 Aug 1764 in Amelia Co. VA. David's wife name given as Joanne White Hernstein born 1705 in Ireland died 1775 Amelia Co. VA.

If you think you might be a descend of Jacques Cossart Jr. the emigrate from Holland, died in NY. He had 7 children and two of his sons: David & Anthony (my two lines) have 16 samples on file through Ancestry DNA.

I am more interested in grandson Anthony Jr. and 10 of the samples filed by his descends. They lived in NC & or TN.

6. Mary Ann Taylor b. 11 Nov 1838, d. 25 Nov 1926 Morganfield, Union Co. VA, married Samuel A. Rudd

7. Alice/Allie Rudd b. 29 Sep 1867 Morganfield, Union Co. KY, d. 24 Jul 1947 Mississipppi Co. MO married Henry H. Hopgood

8. Roy D. Hopgood m. Olive O. King

9. Patsy D. Hopgood m. R.E. Shipp

10. Dee Ann Shipp (me) m. Irvin P. Buck Jr.
The book by W.F. Horn "The Horn Papers" is where the myth of Christopher Gist's parentage was started. This is the only source that his father was Christopher Gist who married Anne Washington (died without issue). We have found NO original records to support the material found in this work. In fact, he made up "the English historians, York and Lockhaven". They never existed !!

His false information was further published by Patricia Ann Guest "Our Guest is your Guess". I love the title of her work. Since, in fact, she was just guessing as to the ancestry of "our" Christopher Gist.

I and Mark Hughes starting in late 1990's tried to find the orginally records clearly showing the parentage of our Christopher Gist. He proved that Anne Washington died without issue. We really could not confirm the above two "authors" even had the right family.

There is no evidence that the family was originally nobles from Italy.

Furthermore, the information Horn published about the Murray family is also false. All made up.

And all the above information now found in various Ancestry Family Trees.
