Dee Ann,
I read one of your post on the pilcher message board on ancestry. I love that you were unwilling to take what others seem to have thrown together as the Final Word....I hate that people put stuff on ancestry that seems to have no basis and cannot be proven.
Ok enough of the tangent. You were looking for info on the pilchers in VA and I was wondering if you had any luck. I am searching for ancestors of Lewis Pilcher b.ca 1789 in VA...he was married in KY in 1815 to Susannah Cobb Moon. I know he had a brother Beverly....I have found their marriage info in records and military records of Beverly and Lewis....but I cannot find anything definitive on their parentage...though if I was willing to accept it they are descended from Lewis Fielding Pilcher....oh well, if you have any info I would appreciate it. Off hand I do not have Lewis Pilcher nor Beverly Pilcher on my computer file in connection with my group of Pilcher. And I do not think all these various Pilcher families were related. We have the added problem--another family by the name of Pitcher lived in the same locations, so those records could be mixed together.
I might have additional information in my binder down stairs, but before I starting pulling a bunch of information I have some questions for you.
1. What county in KY did your ancestor die ?
2. Have you already check the L.D.S. computer file. Someone has put the death year for your ancestor as 15 Mar 1854 no location. Is this information true? There could be a county registry for the county in which he died. Your ancestor listed as Lewis W. Pilcher.
3. If you have military records for him & his brother, which county in VA did he serve ?
4. Have you seen the book by Lucille Jackson Vernon "Pilcher Family History". I really question a lot of the material in her book, but knowning what she put in print, you will know what others have collected for themselves and what they have just pick from her book.
5. DNA studies, I do not know if people of the surname are taking part in a study or not. Michael is envolved with Mackay group, check with him.
I will wait to see if you response before putting out further effort.
Good luck with your researcher.

Fayette Co. Kentucky is where I believe the father of Lewis and Beverly Pilcher would have died.....I am still looking there for a real connection.
Lewis W. Pilcher shows in the 1850 census in Sullivan Co. Missouri to have been born in Va. (unable to find anything on that yet).
He was in Fayette co. ky in 1820, Howard Co. MO in 1830. He is with his brother Beverly in the 1830 census. I have marriage records for them marrying on the same day....Lewis to Susan C. Moon and Beverly to Nancy Moon in the book "Record of Marriages in Fayette Co. KY 1803-1851."
I do believe that Lewis died between 1850 and 1860 because his wife susan is living with eldest son Lewis in the 1860 census. He would have died in Sullivan Co. Missouri, but I have yet to prove that.
My biggest headache now is last night while researching on the missouri death certificate database I found a death certificate for the son Lewis....and it list his father as John L. Pilcher......the mother is Susan Moon so I know it is the same family....but everything I have researched he went by the name Lewis.
In the book History of Lexington Ky Lewis Pilcher and Beverly Pilcher are listed as privates under McGowans Co. (this, the marriages and 1830 census led me to the conclusion that they are brothers)
I have not seen the book you refer to but I have read Margaret Campbell Pilchers book on the Pilchers.
I have been unable to find good links for Howard Co. Missouri or Fayette Co. Ky. Sullivan Co. has a decent website and I intend to go there this summer as most of the pilcher/posey connection ended up there.
If any of this rings a bell please let me know.
Lewis (or John L.) and Beverly would have been born in Va around 1788-1790, I am looking for their parents.
As far as DNA I have not seen reference anywhere to this family name having a project.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will check back. Tracy McKee Posey

I live in Fairfax, VA on 10814 Payne Church Drive, south of the county seat-Fairfax Court House. Our public library is great source of information.
I have to take my morning hour walk and then off to the library. Will examine your problem tonight.
You might want to check the nearest L.D.S. library. On line sites are easy to get at home, but I do not think they will have the information you might need, like LAND DEEDS.
Like I stated in a earlier posting, someone posted your ancestors' death date--day, month & year to L.D.S. computer bank. The problem is finding where they found the information.
Did your family have slaves? If yes then that fact can be a tool establishing your blood line.

"Pilcher Family History" copyright 1980
page 133 called Chapter Four Miscellaneous Pilcher Accounts
"Lewis Pilcher"
"Lewis Pilcher was reared in Virginia and lived most of his life around Fairfax and Culpeper counties. Little is known about his early life, except that he married Mary Rogers, a native of Wales and she born him eighteen children--twelve girls and six boys. The names of these children are not known other than Winslow, who settle in Otego Township, Illinois in 1829. There is also a James Pilcher who settled in Otego in 1830 and Alexander Pilcher settled there in 1836. James and Alexander could also have been the sons of Lewis, but we have no further records on them.
The name of Lewis' father is not known, but it is believed that he may be the son of Robert Pilcher and a brother to James, who settled in North Carolina prior to the Revoluntionary War. Both James and his father (Robert, one of the immigrant brothers from Wales) lived in Culpeper, Virginia before coming to North Carolina and we know that Lewis Lived in Culpeper, as this is where it is recorded that his son Winslow was born in 1794.
Lewis although he had eighteen children of his own, adopted a boy named Robert Sage, who fought in the Battle of Germantown. This also ties Lewis in with the Pilcher brothers, as James Pilcher (son of James and Nancy Murphy Pilcher) married a girl named Nancy Sage.
Lewis moved his family to Frankfort, Kentucky. The year of this move is unknown and no further information is available"
The book has further information about said Winslow.
She has the line of James E. Pilcher and his wife Phoebe Fielding who lived in Culpeper Co. VA and settled in Fayette Co. KY, but no place for your Lewis Pilcher or Beverly Pilcher.
Hope all of the above is new to you.

I would not get a headache about the information you found on the death certificate. Most likely the person giving the information gave the wrong information to the clerk.

You can check for the locations of the nearest L.D.S. to you in KS. Go to familysearch.org.
I do not see on their research lab site records for Fayette Co. KY nor Howard Co. MO. But they do have film to rent for both locations.
You need to find records in Fayette Co. KY as to when and where your Lewis Pilcher entered that location. It might be he was taken into that area by his father, but still you need to know where in VA your family lived.
I could not assume that Lewis & Beverly Pilcher were brother just because they were in the army together. I had an ancestor Joshua Gist at the Battle of Kings' Mountain and he served with his cousins and an uncle. None were his brothers.
Have you been able to find a death record for Beverly Pilcher ?
I would check L.D.S. library for the films they have dealing with Howard Co. MO, there might be an actual death death for Lewis Pilcher.
I will keep your letter in my Pilcher book, perhaps someday I will find out more about my Daniel Pilcher. He did name a son Peter Lewis Pilcher. Another researcher thought that Daniel was related to Peter Pilcher of Culpeper Co. VA, but to date I have not found evidence of that relationship.
Good luck with your research.

I am pretty sure the Pilcher line had slaves. I am going to go to the LDS Library....there is one in Emporia which is close. I also go to Independence MO to the Mid continent library.....they have a great genealogy library. Thx for your help. I will keep up with my search and will let you know if I find anything definitive.
