Frederick Co. VA Land Deed Book 69,173 dated 19 Feb 1841, 19 Feb 1841 Samuel HEFFLEBOWER (sic) indebted to John N. Chenowith for $1000 conveyed in trust as collateral his two nine passenger stages, one six passenger stage, one coach, two buggies and horses with livery items.

Found his family living in Millwood 1860 Clarke Co. VA: Samuel Heflebower (sic) 47, as farmer, Mary B. 46, Bettie C. 18, Edward 16, Sarah 14, George 11, Mary 8 & Ella 5 years.

For the 1860 census listed as a farmer, perhaps he had earlier another line of work, given he possessed the above items.

The spelling of the surname is widely open to various spelling, I do not know how it was indexed by L.D.S. computer bank for 1850 census.

That's my great (3x) grandfather. He married Mary Elizabeth Sowers. My great (2x) grandmother Ella is listed as being 5 years old in this one and my great (2x) grandfather Edward (or Edwin) is age 16.

That name has been butchered by records constantly. In our branch we've spelled it as HEFLYBOWER but I've seen it also as HEFLEBOWER. It originally was spelled as HOEFFELBAUER with an umlaut over the 'O'.

Finally found how they have your ancestor indexed on the 1850 Clarke Co. VA census as: Samuel Hoblebour 41 born MA, Mary E. 38, Eliza 9, Edwin L., Sarah 4, George 1 month taken 20 Aug 1850.

Looking at the image I believe birth place given as MD, not MA.

Perhaps you could comment on if Samuel could have really been born in MD and not VA.

I believe from other family records should be Edwin, but you can look at the images of the 1850 & 1860 census on line, believe most compiler index the name as Edward.

Since the family came down from Pennsylvania I think he was living in Maryland before coming to Clarke County, VA. Also, he lived in Warren County. It's that same strip between the two counties that many of our Sowers family lived.

Just wanted to say that it is good to see you finding your roots and being proud of your heritage. I'm from Sanborn NY but have lived in Quebec, Canada all my life. My mother is Anishinabe and my father was Tuscarora so yeah, I'm not enrolled but I know who I am and where my heart comes from. We were never a shy people were we?

Onah geewahey!!
