Found in abtracted book of marriages for Rockbridge Co. VA: "John W. West 23, single, white, born in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Isaac A. & M.A. West married 11 Jun 1874 to Rachel SMITH 19, single, white, born in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Alexander & Polly Smith."

His parents Isaac W. West & believe Ellen Gaylor, daughter of John. I have found Isaac W. West's parents John & Polly (Tresham) West. But I can't seem to find John W. & Rachel (Smith) West on the census.

Now perhaps the John W. West removed from VA leaving Rachel. Why she would use her maiden name I don't known ????

The film I have ordered 1855-1896 & 1897-1935 the above marriage should be included.

Your ancestor Celia Agnes used the surname SMITH and not West, I do not know what is going on with this family group.

Rachel's first son now Brownie Smith born c1885 died at three years in 17 May 1885.
Michael, I have not forgotten about your Rachel E. Smith. I order additional marriage records to shed light on the 1874 marriage of Rachel E. Smith to John West.

Hope to finish my "Smith Project" by May.

I'm looking forward to seeing the info. I want to get back on that part of my family history soon. Once I finish the Quaker Meeting section of the website (after the Newsletter is done), I'll get back on that.

I have put in the mail today my son DNA test to Family Tree DNA Project

His oldest male blood line Charles Bock of Baltimore, MD, born in Friedrichrickshafen, Wurttemberg, Germany.

His female blood line should match my test results, which is due in 19th May.
E-mail from Family Tree DNA, my son DNA kit received, his female line should be the same as mine--way of testing the tab results.

His male line goes back to Germany.

"John W. West 23 years of age (23), single, born & living in Rockbridge, parents Isaac A. & Mary Ellen West, married in Lexington, VA at his parents house on 11 Jun 1874 to Rachel Smith 18 years of age (19), parents Alexander & Polly Smith"

So Rachel Smith, daughter of Alexander & Polly Smith married to a John W. West as of 1874. Like I have stated I can't seem to find him or her as a couple on the census. Did he died before the birth of her first child in 1882 ? Why would she take back her maiden name as stated on her children marriage, death & birth records ?

You might try looking for local newspaper death notices.

Even more interesting what does his "M" stand for.

I have noticed the surname Mackey in the records for Rockbridge, not a lot of entries.

I wrote down one interesting entry from death registry book--Public Library--

"Harry Hunter Mackey died 18 Apr 1912 of Dropy, born Nov 1869, 48 years, son of John W. Mackey & F.A. Hinkle, born in Augusta Co. VA"

He would have been of the same age group as your Rachel Elizabeth Smith.

Hope by the end of the week the rest of marriage records will arrive.
Reel 79 "George M. Smith age of 20 years, single, born & living in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Alexander & Polly Smith m. 9 Aug 1883 in Lexington, VA to Nancy Jane Armentrout 18 years of age, single, born & living in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Cornelius & Margaret Armentrout"

Reel 75 "James T. Hall 27 years of age, single, born & living in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Wm. & Fannie Hall married on Thursday 24th Apr 1873 at Alexander Smith's house to Ann Eliza SMITH 25 years & 11 months of age, born & living in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Alexander & Polly (alias Mary) Smith"

Reel 75 "Andrew Smith 21 years of age, single, born & living in Rockbridge Co. VA, parents Alexander & Polly Smith m. 3 Dec 1872 to Polly Ann Moore, mother Esther Jane Moore"

I could not find in the wills books of Rockbridge estate papers for Alexander or Polly Smith, but I think from other records they had the following children:

1. Mary J. Smith m. James Chittum
2. Ann Eliza Smith m. James T. Hall
3. Jacob Smith
4. Andrew Smith m. Polly A. Moore
5. John Smith
6. Esteline Smith listed on birth registry Oct 1857
7. Rachel Elizabeth Smith m. John W. West
8. George M. Smith m. Nancy Jane Armentrout
9. Hugh W. Smith b. 16 Apr 1866, d. 16 Dec 1866

I would see if death notices for the above can be found in local newspapers.

If that is indeed my Rachel then it would confirm that Celia and Ashby were indeed cousins. I am pretty sure they were related to each other simply because of who others in his immediate family intermarried with. They lived in a pretty remote area (Collierstown).

Some of my other surnames in the family are Hayslett, Conner & Martin (although by marriage).
Reel 79 "Robert Taylor Hayslett 23 years of age, single, born & living in Rockbridge, parents Andrew & Eliza m. 17 Jan 1884 Rockbridge Co. VA to Elizabeth Caroline Gaylor 25 years of age, single, born & living in Rockbridge, parents James M. & Dolly A. Gaylor"

I believe he is a closer cousin on your Hayslett line than your Gaylor line.

So Rachel Smith, daughter of Alexander & Polly Smith married to a John W. West as of 1874. Like I have stated I can't seem to find him or her as a couple on the census. John W. West & Rachel E. Smith would have been cousins.

His parents: Isaac A. West & Ellen Gaylor

His mothers' parents: John Gaylor & Nancy Irwine,

His parents: John Gaylor & Eleanor Conner (daughter of Dennis)

His parents Edward Gaylor & Barbara............?

Believe the Conner name in your family tree as well.

I would check with West researcher if they have recorded additional information about John W. West.

When I was talking about your Rachel E. Smith with another researcher, he thought she might have divorced her husband and then told people she was "widowed". That would not explain, however, why she went back to her maiden name.

Afraid I am out of ideas !!!

You can view the address of Robert W. Tedder 320 Greenway Ave Satelite, FL 32937. I have never had any luck with contacting L.D.S. researchers, but perhaps he might return your requests for information.

In any case you will want to check out the cemetery "House Mountain Cemetery of Rockbridge Co. VA, burials of

Polly Forehand b. c1795, burial 10 Mar 1880, she the wife of Wm. Smith and they married 27 May 1814. You can order their marriage record through inter-library loan system.

Samuel B. Smith widower died 23 Dec 1914, born 7 Jul 1838, 76 years 16 days, farmer, son of Wm. Smith & Polly Forehand.

Found on the 1880 Rockbridge Census: Samuel Smith 42, wife Margaret J. 40, Eliza J. 14, Charles A. 12, Wm. H. 10, Jamees &.

Found on the 1900 said Samuel living with his son Charles A. (said C.A. Smith has a niece Margaret A. Smith living with him)

Found on the 1910 said Samuel living with his son Charles A. Smith

I do not know why your Rachel E. Smith is not listed on the census, perhaps the above researcher can shed some light on this group of Smith.

I am ASSUMING the P. Smith stands for Polly Smith and it would appear about three Polly living in Rockbridge Co. VA.

Listed on Rockbridge Co. VA birth registry

1. unnamed Smith infant born Oct 1857 parents given as Alexander & Polly Smith

2. Tina Smith born 10 Apr 1874 parents Andrew & Polly Smith

3. Nancy Smith born 30 Nov 1865 parents Robert & Polly Smith

4. John A. Smith born 4 Feb 1860 parents Henry D. & Mary Smith

5. Listed on Rockbridge Co. VA Death Registry: Alexander Smith b. 1822, died 18 Jan 1892 in Col. Town of peneumonia 70 years of age, wife Polly

6. Listed on Rockbridge Co. VA Death Registry: Margaret Smith widow died 30 Apr 1913 of old age, buried in Colliertown, reported by A.J. Smith., Margaret can sometime be Peggy Smith

Only Marriages before your Rachel born year

1. John M. Smith age 43 years born in Augusta Co. VA parents James & S. Smith married 21 Jul 1867 to Margaret Black, again Margaret can be Peggy

2. Joseph Cephas Smith age 23 years Rockbridge, mother Nancy, married 7 Feb 1861 to Mary Ashley MOORE 18 years of age, single, born in Rockbridge, parents Peter & Mary Moore

3. Samuel Smith 26 years of age, father John married 27 Nov 1856 to Nancy Jane Newcomer.
Michael, I have still not received from Richmond, VA those two marriage films for Rockbridge Co., VA. Instead of holding the information that I now have waiting for them, I am sending you what I have collected about the descendants of said Wm. & Polly (Forehand) Smith.

Your second Smith line, which contains your most female line, I have not been able to document John Smith & Wm. Smith were related or not.

I would check land deeds for the various Smith families that lived in Rockbridge Co. VA. Also I did not view the earlier wills of Rockbridge Co. VA. The early marriage records may or may not help in linking together your families.

I believe I saw that either L.D.S. library system has a Higgins Family History to rent or State of VA has a copy. In either case, it might be worth trying to see.

You will be receiving:

1. Tabulated Genealogy of the decendants of Wm. Smith
2. Bits & pieces of Smith information
3. Listing of Rowsey family group
4. Listing of Gaylor family group
5. Two pedigree charts: R.E. Smith & J. West

Since there was so much inter-marrying between your various families I do have some of the families listed in my PAF group, if you want further information let me know.

I will post here any important information I gather from the two marriage registries.

Good luck.
