Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds 45, 245 dated 22 Jan 1822, probated 1822, said Asa McKay named as his daughter Edith McKay he gave her a tract containing 211a in Frederick Co. VA which had been given to him by his late father Jacob McKay. He also gave her slaves: Jane (woman), George (boy), Eliza (girl) & Caroline (child).

In other land deeds named two sons: James McKay & John Green McKay. Census report seem to show additional children, perhaps they died without coming of age.

I hope additional information will surface about Asa McKay, like the name of his wife.

While searching Frederick County historical sources, I found a link to your site. I wish to document the relationship of James McKay to Asa McKay and I am also looking for a will or probate file for Asa McKay. I have researched James McKay in Missouri and now want to document his origins. Thanks for any guidance.

There were two different Asa McKay, one living in Frederick Co. VA and the other in Shenandoah Co. VA.

The one who lived in Frederick Co. VA his line Robert Mackay Sr. (Michael has his will on line) to his eldest son Robert McKay Jr. (died without a will) to his son Jacob McKay Sr. (his will on line and several land deed on film) his son Asa McKay (died without a will as far as I know)

His children that lived to adulthood: Edith, James & John Green McKay

That Asa's blood line is documented by wills, land deeds and I sure you might find other civil records. I do not think you will find his children in the Quaker Records.

I have no further information about them. Remember in my remark that this branch of the McKay possessed slaves. So if your McKay family were also slave owners who will want to pay attention as how and when you family came to possess slaves. You will find slaves named in land deeds and wills and other court records.

State of VA has chancery files index on line for Frederick Co. VA. I think only a matter of time that the actual files will be on line. Fauquier Co. VA case files can be viewed on line.

My Frederick Co. VA land deeds & wills are still available for sale to the public. The above blood line left records in Frederick Co. VA. I hope to sort out the Asa McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA when I start my Shenandoah Co. VA Wills & Land Deed project. I do not know if those Mckay are decendants of Robert Mackay Sr. or not.

I would check in MO records for marriage & death record for your James McKay and if Edith & John Green also show up in MO any record linking them to your known James McKay to them would seem to document your line back to Robert Mackay Sr.

At this point in time if you just have your oldest known McKay as a James McKay born in VA ? There are many James McKay of VA.

I would check with Michael about his DNA test. I am sure he would love to have another branch of McKay entered into his DNA bank.

It is interesting to me to find locations in other parts of US where my DISTANT cousin lived. My grandmother was born in Warren Co. VA, so I have no direct interest in McKay in other locations. I have enough to keep me busy in VA records.

I believe a branch of Moses McKay Sr. (youngest son of Robert Sr.) removed to MO. His son Moses Jr. also had a son named JAMES as well as: Jacob, Mary, Barsheba, Robert & Lydia. So you will want to carefully collect documents on your James McKay to make sure you have the right James. It COULD be these two branchs of Robert Sr. decendants might be mixed into together by earlier researchers.

Keep us posted about your quest.

I have not seen the original marriage record-- recorded in Margaret E. Myers "Frederick County Maryland Marriage 1811-1840" Records found in the court house of Frederick, MD (as stated in her introduction)

list Asia (sic) McKay & Amelia Lanham 12 May 1812

I do not know if the compiler should have recorded the first name as Asa, or this is entire different man.

I have no evidence that the Asa McKay of Frederick Co. VA or Asa McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA one of them went up to MARYLAND to take a bride. I need to find a real record as to the names of their wives.

Robert Barnes list a marriage in Frederick Co. MARYLAND a Benjamin McKay & Rebecca Briscoe on 17 Jan 1797

I have no idea if said Benj. & Asia are related. These first name not used by my MacKay family (in early records).

I have not seen records of the decendants of Robert Mackay Sr. who settled in Frederick & Shenandoah Co. VA remove to parts of MARYLAND.

Good luck with your research.

I have land purchase documents for James M. McKay and Edith McKay as well as the probate files for James M. McKay and John Green McKay. I also have marriage and census records for James and Edith.

James M. McKay and Edith McKay each bought adjacent public land from the government in 1831 in St. Charles County, Missouri. James M. McKay made an additional land purchase in 1836. Edith McKay Married Archibald Caruthers in 1833 and James M. McKay married Rosina Pfarr in 1841. I have a probate document submitted to the court by Rosina McKay which states "Edy Caruthers, John Green McKay sister & brother and myself, widow of the said deceased James McKay are all his heirs..."

So I definitely want to purchase your Frederick County, Virginia Land and Deed book as well as your Tabulated Genealogy of the Family of Robert and Ann MacKay Sr. as well. Ironically, during recent research in a LDS Family History Center, I saw the listing for the 'Tabulated Genealogy' book, but the center does not keep it in its collection. So it is an honor and a pleasant surprise to be able to communicate with you and request your books. Thank you very much for your assistance and please advise me how to make the purchases.

You will want to order through the L.D.S. on film Hunter B. McKay "Fairfax Land Suit" a must have for Robert Mackay Sr. decendants.

I still think you should ask Michael about how to enter the DNA testing.

Good luck with your research.

Thank you for the book listings and purchase information and how do I go about communicating with Michael about DNA testing?

By the way, you're information about the other McKays in Missouri helps explain the Government Land Office record I found for a "James McKay" without a middle initial in Clay County, Missouri made a few years before "James M. McKay" purchased land in St. Charles County.

Hey Gerrard,

What you will first have to do is go to Family Tree DNA and purchase a test kit.

http://www.familytreedna.com/

You will then have to follow the instructions for submitting a sample to them. After a few weeks you should receive your test results and most likely I'll get some kind of notice that there's a genetic match (based on the info. you've told us about your being descended from Robert Mackay Sr.).

After you receive your results I'll ask that you create a Y-search account and upload them there. Then I can add them to our comparison table with the other Robert Mackay descendants and close matches from the Key (Kee) test subjects.

Here's our comparison page I set up:

http://www.geocities.com/mckyrbnsn/line ... tches.html

Good luck with this.

Around 1830 to 1831 I should find in Frederick Co. VA land deed your branch selling their lands once possessed by Asa McKay. Those deed should be found in Book 57 or 58. It will be interesting to me to see what happens to their slaves.

What I find I will post on Michael's site.
