My name is Barry Collett and I am currently researching my Collett family and representing a group of Collett cousins who can trace their lineages back to various Colonial America Collett groups (as well as England and Italy). We are currently doing a Collett DNA project, in order to link various lineages where earlier written records may be absent, or have yet to be linked. At this time, we have participants for the following lineages and are currently attempting to locate direct male line Collett descendants for Moses Collett b. 1718 Baltimore Co., MD...of which many of his descendants ended up in the Clinton Co., OH area. Doesn't this project have people who arrived to US from France ?

This was sent to me via email. I didn't know a Collett DNA project was going on, but I figured for the benefit of those cousins of ours who have that surname I thought I'd pass it along here.

I imagine it deals with anyone whose surname is Collett or a variant like the other surname projects do. Some may show connections to a French ancestor. Others may not.

The first posting about the Collett DNA project stated they are trying to find a link from a Moses Collett born in 1718 Baltimore Co. MD as ancestor of the surname in Clinton Co. OH.

The book by Robert W. Barnes seems to point to the idea that the above Moses Collett was the descendant of a John Collett born 1578 died 1650 married to Susanna Ferrar. His will names his children. I am sure by reading land deeds ect.... for Baltimore Co. MD researchers would find the needed link.

If members of the family spoke another language but English that generally can be seen by examining the records.

I think it has always been alluded that there was a French connection but whether or not the Collett ancestors came to England prior to North America is the question.

One story has them has coming from France and settling in England and then later coming to North America.

The statement given as "Stephen Collett came from France".

I do not think they can prove the statement and I rather doubt Stephen was the emigrate.

I think it's one of a handful of family tales about Collett origins that have been passed down. If you've seen some of the Collett information I have you'll see at least two versions of where the Collett family came from.

I don't know who is actually researching the Colletts prior to their intermarriage into our McKay family but it's probably one of them who started the DNA project.

I do know that Colletts intermarried with members of our Haines family and also Hackneys prior to intermarrying with our McKays so at least those particular Colletts end up in Quaker records. Still doesn't really tell us where the Colletts originally came from.
