I have purchased a letter through Ebay that was written by Jacob McKay (which one?) to Moses McKay in Waynesville, Ohio. This letter was dated 1827. Once it arrives I will transcribe it and put it on the website. I will also provide pictures of the letter as well.

Do you know the history of the letter ?

Does not the content of the letter point to which Jacob ?
Does this Jacob mention other family members?

Robert Jr.'s son Jacob would have been dead by that time. He died by 1817.

A Jacob McKay posting a letter in 1827, could be Jacob Sr.'s son Jacob or his grandson also Jacob.

Andrew McKay's son Jacob died by 1815.

Looking forward to the new information.

Well, now we've eliminated two of the ones I was thinking of.

Here's the description:

This folded lettersheet / stampless letter has a circular date stamp for WINCHESTER VA, a 25 cent rate, and is addressed to Joshua Yoe, Esquire, Wainesville [Waynesville], Ohio, Warren cty, to the care of Moses McKay, and is a three page letter written by Jacob McKay. The headline is Crooked Run, Decr 2nd, 1827.

Some abstracts:

"We recv'd your Letter informing us of the death of our much esteemed relation Levi which was indeed a shock, he was indeed a relation I very much respected and a young man of as good (in many respects) morals and nice sense of honour as was comon ...."

"I wish you if you please to attend the payment of the tax on the Land that Brother Jesse conveyed to me adjoining George McKays part of which is in Green county and some in Clinton ..."

"I will send the money out by Bernard as he expects to be out shortly & also Joseph McKay or some other person, we have been making arrangments for some time to come out ..."

"... if Jesse Wood should succeed Levi in the administration ..."

"We have had a good deal of sickness in our neighbourhood this season ..."

"James Antram & wife has ague every third day Washington McKay and his family is some of them sick yet, they have had a sick family."

And more writing. Condition of the letter rates good. There's an old paper mend over the seal tear. As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed. Please note that most stampless letters have faults such file folds, tears at and opposite the sealing wax area, and some stains / wear / tear here and there. I hope the scan gives you a general idea of the condition.

If you could tell by the hand writing if said Jacob was an old man about 59 years, then I would say most likely Jacob son of Jacob Sr., son of Robert Jr.

But for other reasons I think the writer was "our" Jacob McKay (husband of Elizabeth Antrim).

On page 87 of my McKay book with the chart of the different Jacob & Jesse McKay family grouping, all three Jacobs: Sr., Jr. & III had brothers named Jesse. So no big deal the writer mentioning a brother Jesse.

I did include with my McKay book the marriage record of Jacob McKay & Elizabeth Antrim. I do not know if the letter was signed or not. You might try comparing the two records.

The Washington McKay listed on page 58 of my McKay book the son of Jacob & Mary (Haines) McKay.

The James Antrim and wife mentioned were: James Antrim who married Ann Pratt on 8th Mar 1820 in Frederick Co. VA. Their minister Thomas Buck, John McKay posted their bond. James' family line can be found in my Antrim Book pages 26 & 139. He was the son of John & Ann (Hackney) Antrim. His father was the brother of the father of "our" Elizabeth Antrim.

Another researcher, informed me that The Handley Library in Winchester, has on file all the Chancery Causes for Frederick Co. VA. Michael you will find these films a "gold mine" of information. We might find in these files samples of McKay hand writing. Each roll takes about hour & half to read.

I have found in Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds Book 25, 551 a Jacob McKay witness the deed filed by Thomas B. Martin of Greenway Court dated 21 Apr 1790. He took an oath on the document. I think this Jacob was the son of Jacob Sr. (removed to OH) As far as I know Jacob Sr. (son of Robert Jr.) remained a Quaker through out his life time, as did Jacob II McKay (son of Andrew McKay), so this just leaves Jacob Jr. (son of Jacob Sr., son of Robert Jr.)

I hope to turn up more information as I go through Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds & Chancery Causes.

You know from the dates, Moses and Abigail both died about a month after this letter was written. I wonder if they ever got to read it.

I've transcribed the letter to the best of my ability onto the website. I'll add some pictures of it shortly.

Here's a direct link if you want to see it.

I've finished uploading the scans of the letter so you can see the actual writing.

I believe by what is written in it that there is no doubt that the author is Jacob McKay III. Among the items he mentions is to inform Moses McKay that certain relatives are well and among them is Robert. This is likely Moses's son Robert S. McKay who is married to Nancy Antrim McKay, the daughter of Jacob McKay III and Elizabeth Antrim.

Other relatives mentioned are Jesse Wood and I'm assuming Levi is Levi Wood. This helps confirm the connection between him and Jacob McKay I, his grandfather. It helps to show that in addition to Moses's branch of the family, other McKay descendants had an interest in Ohio as well.

A couple of interesting coincidences though. First being that the letter is dated 2 Dec 1827 and I received it on 2 Dec 2006. The second being that my birthdate is 1 Sep 1966. Jacob McKay III's birthdate is 1 Sep 1785. Pretty strange coincidences I think.

Found on page 88 marriage record of our Jacob (one buried in Nineveh Cemetery) married Elizabeth Antrim. He signed the bond as Jacob McKay Jr. Dated 19 Dec 1807 so we can assume his father Jacob McKay was still alive.

The way in which the Jacob McKay signed the letter of 2 Dec 1827 to me looks like the same Jacob minus the JR. We know his father dead by 1830 Shenandoah Co. VA census. I think the year of 1827 gives us a better death date for his father Jacob Mckay.

As I thought earlier the Jacob Mckay who received the letter was our Jacob McKay buried in Quaker Cemetery, Warren Co. VA. I have been going through Frederick Co. VA tax list. That Jacob's father Jacob McKay 2nd appears for the last time on the tax list 1814 taxed for Mill. Andrew Mckay's son Jacob died by 1815 his estate on that list.

These tax list appear to show Jacob McKay (who removed to OH) his son Jacob McKay would appear to have had more than just Jacob and his brother Jesse. I do not know what happened to them. They did not stay in VA.

Found on 1809 tax list our Jacob Mckay 1st
Jacob Mckay 2nd
Jacob Mckay 3rd this is way they were listed.

Jacob Mckay 1st has we know removed to OH and I believe his will on line and he gifted his lands to his sons in VA before he left.

Son Jacob Mckay 2nd stayed in Robert Mackay Jr. "Old Place" must have gifted it to his son

Jacob Mckay 3rd. He is the one who married Elizabeth Antrim and buried in Nineveh Cemetery, Warren Co. VA.

I hope this tax list will clear up close ends as to the McKay in Frederick Co. VA and Warren Co. VA.

The branches who lived in Shenandoah Co. VA I will get to them next month.

The purpose of these tax lists were to raise monies for the government. So I trust the information I am gathering from these records are correct.

Uncle Hunter back in 1970's collected information from others about the affairs of Moses McKay who left VA for OH. He was told that Moses McKay left VA with his "many slaves" who help him set up his house, barn etc and then set them free. Since slaves were the plantation owner MOST valuable asset, setting them free meant a great lost of money.

The number of Moses McKay's slaves were given as "22 slaves". Well the tax list for Frederick Co. VA 1818 the last list he was on-- he was taxed for the grand total of TWO SLAVES.

With these tax list I can figured out the actual year my Quaker Mckay in Frederick, Shenandoah etc....left the Society of Friends for the Baptist. My McKay Family rather be Baptist and keep their slaves than to be Quaker and be without their slaves.
