Michael, I'm getting into DNA and have had mine done but now I'm getting ready to nag my brother into it and had read somewhere on this site (I think) that you recommended a certain place from which to order the kit.

Could you prime my memory, Please.

Thanks,

caleurk

Now which test should I order him? Is the 12 marker good enough or should I go up?

Michael McKay
You should order the 12 Marker test to start with. From there you move up to more markers.

Hey Bibby,

Could you tell me again how you descend from Robert Mackay Sr.? I can't seem to find where I had information on that.

We descend through James McKay, son, who married Mary Chester. Then through James McKay b. 1750 d. 1787, m. Mary Cheek b.1755 d. 1830 b. Switzerland Co. IN. She and children moved there after James's death. next is Son, Robt. McKay b. 1782 Shenandoah Co. Va. d. 05-5-1832 Switzerland Co, IN m. Mary Cain b. 1784 VA d. 2 5 1847 Switzerland C. William Shaw McKay b. 27 4 1850 Switz. Co IN d. 06 09 1938 . b. Vevey Cemetary Switz. Co. IN. m. 12 09 1873 Jennie Miller b. 08 01 1855 Switz. Co. In d. 09 06 1931 Vevey Cemetary, Switz. Co. IN. My father, William Abbett McKay b. 13 12 1924 Milton ky. d. 28 01 1988 b. Ft Lauderdale FL. M. 14 06 1947 1. Mary Ann Wilson (our mother) b. 23 09 1924 Louisville, Ky. d. 03 05 1983 Decatur IL. m. 2 Ann Nash Hanlon 16 02 1925. Mary Elizabeth McKay b. 20 08 1949 Madison IN m. 06 01 1973 Gary Appleby b. 30 08 1951 Atwood Il. I think I am still alive. My brother David Wilson McKay b 10 04 1953 Shelbyville Ky who has two daughters from his first marriage. Sorry I don't know the date which is disgraceful.

I hope this makes sense to you. I'm not the greatest typist to show up on the track. I just call us the Indiana line. My Grandfather, Ray, came to a couple of reunions in the 60's and corresponded greatly with Hunter McKay.

Still working on my brother's DNA. I turned out to be an I.

Someday, I hope to make it to a reunion as our daughter just graduated from Michigan Law School and is setting up residency in Washington D.C.

Thanks for the info. on your McKay line. When you say 'I turned out to be an I', I'm assuming that you're referring to the MTDNA test since females can't take the Y-DNA test.

My MTDNA group is H and the farthest female line only ancestor I have back is Rachel E. Smith.

If your line can do the male DNA test, would really help (or hurt) the results we have from Michael's test.

Please let us known the results.

Only one problem though, if he takes the test we'll only have two to go on, so if it doesn't prove to be a match, which one would be at fault?

I think if it does match it would help cement the Robert Mackay DNA link.

We'll need participation from other male Robert Mackay descendants with the name Mackay to make the tests worthwhile. Specifically those who connect with the earlier generations.

I almost forgot I did get a 12/12 match with another McKay from the vicinity of Zanesville, Ohio but this individual did not have his lineage listed, nor have I received a reply from him.

I had guessed he would likely be descended from Robert through one of the many different branches of the family, or he could be descended from another McKay family and that would be great because it would show that there were actually relatives of Robert Mackay Sr. living in North America in addition to our own Robert Mackay family.

From all the early documents we have, there aren't any other relatives of Robert mentioned other than his three wives and his children, grandchildren etc.
