The book by Wm. Allen Way (copyright 1987) of the family history of Harry Coy was interesting but not helpful in our search for Robert MacKay.

Stated in the introduction of the book "Eva Jane Pryor of Woodstock CT who was the first to suggest that the "Coy" family we were trying to trace in the early 18th CT were not the Coys of English descent, but more likely the Maccoys of Scottish descent."

This book traces the beginning of the family from Daniel Mackay/Maccoy the Scottish Prisoner who died in MA and his children removed to CT then to NH, VT, to NJ into Canada and finally to Michigan. The surname was changed from Mackay/Maccoy in MA to Coy by the third generation.

Michael, you might look to see if people of Coy surname have submitted a D.N.A sample.

Their book did not give the birth place of their Daniel, nor did they say there was any relationship among the other Mackay. They claim that their Daniel Maccoy was the oldest Maccoy in the present day US.

I will be getting additional film in the next weeks dealing with "town books" for two places in CT.
In their book, they questioned (various "Professional Genealogist" and Librarians) if Alexander Mackay (various spelling) was the son of Daniel MacKay who died in MA by 1711. His will does not name said Alexander as his son and the church records do not record his birth as belonging to Daniel. His other children are so recorded and the ones "alive" at the time of his death recorded in his will.

Why, then they did not look at the other Mackay men as being the father of Alexander I do not know. There was that captured soldier named Alexander.

I will be abtracting all material I can find dealing with the early MacKay of 1651.

They did not try to follow the other children of Daniel. It could be some of the other sons of Daniel had descendants and used the surname MacKay etc. According to their book the descendants of Alexander used the surname Coy.

I recorded the wrong first name they are looking for, Archibald not Alexander MacKay

The book which speaks of the family & ancestry of Harry Coy, just traces his direct line. The statement their Mackay were the only first Mackay who arrived in the ship "John and Sarah" is false.

The John Mackay who died in CT on 13 Nov 1712 at the age of 72 years, could have been the John listed arriving in 1651.

I will in the future abtracting information about the other prisoners.
It will be in January that my next batch of film will arrive. I have order a film dealing with Suffolk Co. MA. In a court case between John Hambleton vs George Newby, one of the witness James Mackey/Mackay date of 8 Jan 1695.

Also have order films dealing with births, marriages & deaths for Boston.

I e-mail a document from L.D.S. 0909886 Suffolk Co. MA court case in which a James MacKay was a witness, if any one wants a copy I will try to forward it by e-mail.

He did sign his name. Date of the record 8 Jan 1695.

I think three researchers: Marlyn R. Lewis, Oren Thomas & Jo Ann P. Deady have submitted to the L.D.S. computer bank the same Daniel McCoy, they have him born c1633 Larg, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. This location adjoining the Irish Sea at Salway Firth & Dumfries it at the border with Northern England.

If this is the same Daniel Mackay (Scottish Prisoner) arrived 1651, they have submitted his first son Archibald as being born in "Argyleshire, Scotland", this has to be incorrect. They also have additional children applied to his family group which I have not found original records. I do not see him having a daughter Sarah (b. 19 Jan 1663 in Cambridge, MA), Wm. (born Templemore, Londonderry, Derry, No. Ireland), George (same location as Wm.), Daniel (born Cambridge, MA)& Mary in twice. Needless to say all his children would have been born in MA.

Daniel's children are about the same age group as "our Robert" and I see no Robert connected to him.

I have additional micofiche to read at the L.D.S. center and have order additional film for Suffolk Co. MA, therefore I see no good to write to the above researchers.
My direct question was where did the information come from for the birth place of Daniel MacKay/McCoy of MA being Larg Kirkcubright given by the three researchers.

From her letter dated 2nd Jul 2007:

Her answer: "the name does not ring a bell". "I did very little research on individuals who were not in my dirct line". "My material mostly came from L.D.S. records in the library in Salt Lake City". "I did not use others computer files". "I have original records for only my direct line". "I'am sorry to have been of so little help as I know first hand how frustuating that research can be!"

In short, a lot of nothing. Certainly no answer if there exist real records as to the birth places of the MacKay brought from Scotland to MA.

The letter I send to Oren Thomas & Velda McKee who I wanted to learn the source for the information as to Daniel MacKay/McKee' birth place--"return to Sender unable to Forward"

So we will not learn the sources of those researchers.

Received an e-mail from her this morning (17 Aug 2007), she said "this research was done by someone else." And of course, the person who gave her the information is dead--Gary Zimmerman. All his records were "tossed" by his heirs.

So in short, she doesn't have any documentation for the birth place of Daniel MacKay in Scotland.

Once again information appears in the L.D.S. computer bank and nobody seems to have documentation.

I realize that your post is a bit old, but I wanted to pass on the information that Tom and Velda are both deceased. They are my grandparents, and passed away several years ago.

I've recently started to try to explore my geneology a bit. Unfortunately I was too young when they were alive to think much about it. I'm not sure what has happened to all of their research. They were living with my father (their son) at the end of their lives, but I am currently not in contact with him. I have a feeling though that he didnt keep any of it, which is quite unfortunate.

If you have any information that leads back to them, I would love to hear from you. I have some information on Velda to start searching with, but as for Oren I don't even have his parents names. I'm new to this as well, so I really dont know where to go with it as far as searching for information.

A great deal of the address posted on L.D.S. library site, letters are returned.

What is your connection with Daniel MacKay of early MA ?

Two other location for the birth place of "our" Robert MacKay Sr. I want to check out:

Stonington, New London, CT a John McKay & Mary Thorpe married 7 May 1691

Wethersfield, Hartford, CT a Daniel McKay & Dorothy Billings married in 1695

These men would be about the same generation as "our" Robert MacKay guessing he married about 1700.

A note in "Handy Book For Genealogists" stated that "The settlement of Connecticut began in 1635 by former Massachusetts colonists. Some of them left Massachusetts on order of narrow religious leaders, and others because they had become weary of the intolerant attitude displayed by those leaders."

In the books by David Dodson he made the same kind of statement.

The MacKay that arrived by 1651/2 would have paid out their passage monies by about 1660 and perhaps some left MA around that time.

The above John McKay researchers have placed his name into the L.D.S computer bank as being born in CT about 1640, of course I do not believe that could be true place of his birth. They also have his father as being Hugh Mackay born about 1639 ?

I will be looking for documentation in the future.
Hi Dee Ann,

Has anything new been found oun R Mckay Sr. lineage in NJ and CT? I am looking at the individuals that Robert Witnessed in 1705.

Just Curious

Sincerely,

Shaun McKay
