Statement dated 23 Mar 1770, Barnaby Eagan gives his age as 70. He is giving a statement about being the chain carrier for Mr. Wood.

So he would have been born 1700, so a little older than Robert Sr's children and about 20 years younger than Robert.

What are the sources they are giving ?

I joined the Eagan family Yahoo! group in the hopes that someone there might have come across the passenger list for 'William & Ann'.

I am curious to learn more about the relationship between Barnabas Eagan and our Robert Mackay Sr.

I believe the practice of indentured servitude was pretty commonplace back then. It was a means for paying ones voyage to the New World.

If Robert did not come on the William & Ann then perhaps he was contacted by Barnabas Eagan prior to his arrival and he (Robert) payed for his voyage.

But then again, how would Barnabas Eagan have known Robert Mackay if he was living in Ireland and Robert was in the colonies?
What is the address for this group of researchers ? Do they have a "message board" like your web page ?

I would like to see their source material. Obviously none have read the "Fairfax Land Suit".

Here's the address to the Eagan Group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Eaganfamily/

It's not a website like this one which I edit and create pages using a blank slate but it's part of the Yahoo! group network and they are set up a little differently. In order to view it's contents you have to become a member of the group.

I created a Yahoo! group myself to display the Newsletter online. It serves no other purpose since I'd rather people just discuss things here. Only if people would like to view the Newsletter as an electronic file would they join it. Other than that no messages are sent to it.

Back to the Eagan group, I did get a reply from my initial post from a man who quoted a passage from 'Pioneers of Old Frederick County' about Robert Mackay Sr. purchasing land in Cecil County from Stephen Hollingsworth and his eventual partnership with Jost Hite. Nothing about his place of origin other than New Jersey which is what we've already confirmed.

The account of his gift of land from Robert MacKay Sr. given in the Fairfax Land Suit. You can view a copy through various public libraries.

I am very interested where Robert MacKay Sr. acquired his services. Was in it in the Nottingham Meeting House area (now MD)? or Freehold NJ ? or perhaps some where else. The last location could give us the earlier location where Robert MacKay Sr. lived.

Let us know what you find out.

Good luck with your research.
I THINK THEY CAME FROM IRELAND ON THE GEORGE AND ANN IN 1729. I FIND A LITTLE HERE AND THERE BUT NO REAL ANSWERS. I FIND THE DIARY OF CHARLES CLINTON THAT TELLS OF THE VOYAGE THE MCDOWELL FAMILY WAS ON THE VOYAGE TOO. BARNABAS MARRIED RACHEL MCDOWELL.THEY WERE HEADED FOR PENN. BUT LANDED IN CAPE COD.SOME OF THE PASSENGERS STAYED THERE OTHERS TRAVELED ON TO PENN.I WISH THERE WAS SOME WAY WE COULD FIND A LIST OF PASSENGERS ON THAT SHIP.

That would be the biggest help in determining who was on the 'George & Anne' and who was not.

The problem we have with different theories as to where our Robert Mackay Sr. came from has to do with how it ties into the known chronology of his life.

For example, if he was stated as being a land owner prior to the departure date of the 'George & Anne' then how could he have come aboard that ship?

According to the Fairfax Land Suit (which I have a copy) Barnabas Eagan gives his age as being 70 years old on 23rd March 1770 which would make him about 29 when the 'George & Anne' set sail.

1. What evidence do the Eagan researcher have that he actual came over in the ship "George & Ann" ? The year they give out 1729 Robert was already in PA/MD.

2. What evidence do they have he was indentured servant of our Robert ? The evidence from Fairfax Land Suit, said B. Eagan also worked for others ? We do not know if Robert just met him in VA.

I really think what is now going to happen "our" Robert MacKay is now going to be reported in the net coming from Northern Ireland (again) in the ship "George & Anne". In fact I see no evidence either man was on that ship.

Please give us sources.

She sent me an email with this info:

IN THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE I FIND WHERE THEY MIGHT HAVE COAME FROM IRELAND ON THE SHIP GEORGE AND ANN . I CAN NOT FIND A PASSANGER LIST. I HAVE FOUND ON TWO WEB SITES THAT HE WAS A SERVANT OF ROBERT MCKAY
I HAVE ALSO SEEN THE SAME PLACE THEY CAME TO THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT VIRGINIA

It would be good to find a passenger list for this ship. I did do some Internet searches for the 'George and Ann' and found that the ship left Ireland in 1729. Some Scottish passengers were on this ship. Seems to have come from the northern part of Ireland (now known as Northern Ireland).
The daughter of Robert MacKay, Mary MacKay was married 14 Apr 1726 in Nottingham Meeting House to George Robinson. So impossible he and B. Eagan were ship mates.

Vol 1 page 433 Banibee Eagon (sic) was nominated for constable of Augusta Co. VA 11 Apr 1749. So lets say "up standing" member of society at the age of 49 years.

Interested parties might find additional information about him in land deeds & wills.

That won't happen here. So many times of trying to debunk the Hugh Mackay connection hopefully shows people we only present the known facts on Robert Mackay Sr.

Having a copy of the Fairfax Land Suit I hadn't paid any attention to Barnabas Eagan until I received an email about him. Being unfamiliar with the name I thought maybe a clue to Robert Mackay's origins lies with this family. I guess the same thing Hunter thought when he researched some of our allied families hoping that perhaps in their history he might find a clue to Robert's origins.

So far, nothing, nada, zip.

I received this message from Wendy Dunson:

------------------------------------

I HAVE BEEN TRACING MY FAMILY TREE.

BARNABAS EAGAN IS AS FAR BACK AS I CAN GO.

IT IS SAID THAT HE CAME TO THIS COUNTRY AS AN INDENTURED SERVANT OF ROBERT MCKAY.

THAT HOW HE GOT THE MILK HOUSE WAS HE WAS GIVEN IT BY ROBERT MCKAY FOR BEING A FAITHFUL SERVANT FOR MANY YEARS.

CAN YOU GIVE ME ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

WENDY DUNSON
I might find additional information about him in Cecil Co. MD/Chester Co. PA, any indenture of a servant should be found in land deeds. He still just might have met "our Robert" in VA.

With the 1705/06 land deed of Middlesex Co. VA, I rather doubt Robert MacKay met your Eagan in MA. They met either in NJ, PA or VA.

Good luck with your research
