To prove that the two sons of John & Rebecca McKay married into the Garrison Family.

Joseph McKay m-1 22 Nov 1825 in Frederick Co. VA to Sally/Sarah Garrison, m-2 10 Aug 1835 in Shenandoah Co. VA to Dolly Ann Massie, last wife and husband buried in Nineveh Cemtery, Warren Co. VA. Said Joseph McKay in right of his wife received slave Peter from said Sally/Sarah's father Nehemiah Garrison estate.

John Wesley McKay m-1 24 May 1832 to Frances E. Garrison, m-2 5 Mar 1835 Shenandoah Co. VA to Mary E. Hupp, widow & daughter of Thomas Massie, m-3 by Jan 1855 to Mary Elenore Massie, all three buried in Nineveh Cemetery, Warren Co. VA. Said Frances as a single woman received Edmond.

Both men are listed on 1850 Slave Schedule possessing slaves. Need to find another record of said Joseph having a slave named Peter and connected to one of the other known children of John & Rebecca McKay, to be sure he was married twice.

Record from Frederick Co. VA Land Deed Book 56,479, dated 24 Feb 1830, 1 Jun 1830 probated. Division of slaves of Nehemiah Garrison, his widow Rebecca and their children: Sarah L. McKay, Wm. Garrison, Evelina Elgin, Thomas Garrison, Charles Garrison & Frances Garrison.

Warren Co. VA Land Deeds Book G 24 dated 23 May 1857, probated 2 Jun 1857, John W. McKay used his slaves: George, Sarah, Ellen, Israel & Elias to secure his debts.

Then it would appear all were sold out of the McKay family 26th Jun 1858 into Cooper, Morris & Jones families. I do not see the above people living in Warren Co. VA for 1870 census.

I want to find out where & when my ancestor T.B. McKay came to possess his slaves listed on the 1860 Slave Schedule.

Ben could be the older male devised to him by his father Jacob. He received no female slaves from his father's estate.

As we know the issue of female slaves become the property of the owner. So where did Thomas B. McKay get his other slaves?. Did he purchase them ?
If that is the case their names should be found in Warren Co. VA land deed books. Or did he get them through his marriage with Ann Elizabeth on 20 Dec 1852 she could have been devised slaves from her father.
Eli Lehew's children: Jonathan Branson, Ann Elizabeth (would marry T.B. McKay), Charles Edwin & Francis Wesley guardian report found in Warren Co. VA Will Book B, his slaves: Newton, Sarah & child (not named) & Maria & child (not named) hired out and monies used to support the above orphans.

Their step-mother Ann Van Nort lived in Front Royal on Chester Street, where said Ann E. Lehew married Thomas Buck McKay. According to the 1850 slave schedule she owned two slaves: female 23 years of age & a male two years of age. I would assume these were her dower slaves and not included in the two sets of mother & child slaves.

I do not know if any of these slaves became part of the McKay slaves or not. If researchers are interested in slaves owned by the Lehew family. Some of the above slaves could have lived in Hampshire, Shenandoah/Page & Warren counties of VA.

The will of Joshua Antram dated 7 Sep 1844 beside lands given to his niece Elizabeth McKay (wife of Jacob) devised one slave girl. Unfortunately I could find a record which named his slaves. Also Nancy McKay (wife of Robert S. McKay) to receive a female slave, also Sarah Buck (wife of Charles Buck) to have one female slaves, also Eliza Buck (wife of John G. Buck) to have one of his female slaves.

So there could have been Antrim slaves who became part of two different McKay household. The above Buck related to McKay by marriage.

I am assuming people know the relationship between above Antrim with McKay family members.

Found Land Deed Book 36,301, dated 4 Jul 1814, probated 3 Aug 1814, John Humston of Frederick Co. VA sells his slave named Harry for $500 to Jacob MCKAY JR.

I will be watching later land deed in the hope I can tie this slave Harry with our known Jacob McKay Jr. (who married Elizabeth Antrim) or was this Jacob McKay (son of Jacob McKay Sr. who removed to OH).

I do not remember when Quakers were told to free their slaves or leave the Society of Friends.
Warren Co. VA Will Book A 313 Slaves in John McKay's inventory: Frances (girl)$400, Malinda & two children $500, Levina $50 and Caroline & child $500 dated Jul 1845 probated 19 Jan 1846.

He had three sons: Joseph, John W. & Jesse (don't know where he died) I really do not see the above slaves in their households. Could have been sold out of the McKay households.

Warren Co. VA Land Deed Book D 190, it would appear that Jacob & Elizabeth (Antrim) McKay son Wm. Buck McKay married a woman named Elizabeth and at the date of the deed 4 Aug 1847 living in Wabash Co. IN. Also he was not their youngest child, most likely born @1826 after his brother Francis McKay. The deed also named Thomas Buck & Oscar C. McKay as their minor children at the time of the deed.

I can not seem to find Wm. Buck McKay & his wife Elizabeth on the L.D.S. census for 1850, nor Heritage Quest for 1860.

Could be another male line living in IN not traced.

The Frances slave of Jane R. (Wells) McKay could be the same woman listed on Birth Registry being the slave of said Robert S. McKay.

My question is after freedom did she use the surname Wells or McKay.

Found on 1870 Dinwiddie Co. VA Frances Wells age 41 years living with Henderson Wells 42. If I have extra time of my hands, will order the death registry for that location to see if said Frances Wells' death is listed.

Frederick Co. VA Book 53,440, dated 1 Jan 1828,4 Feb 1828, James Sowers indebted to John Kerfoot Sr. for $2124.26 used his slaves as collateral

Lucy & her 8 children: Moriah, George Hiram, Joe, Mary, Mahaly, Elias & Tom

Milly & her 5 children: Polly Harriet, Ann, Jane & Wm.

Two other men: John & Jim.

This James Sowers was one of my ancestors, son of Daniel & Catherine Sowers, born 11 Jul 1775 married 31 Dec 1798 in Frederick Co. VA to Elizabeth Kerfoot, died 24 Dec 1849 "Greenway" Clarke Co. VA, buried Old Bethel Church, Clarke Co. VA.

Since he died before the 1850 & 1860 Slave Schedules finding the number & names of his slaves will have to come from other records.

Clarke Co. VA Land Deed Book F 2 Feb 1859, James Sowers used as collateral his rights to a slave Maria & her children (not named).

Said slaves were part of a law suit said James Sowers filed against Joseph P. Hollingsworth & his son James H. Hollingsworth.

The court filed that said Maria & her one child 6 months of age as of 6th May 1842 would be held in trust for the benefit of Louisa Hollingsworth wife of said Jopseh P. Hollingsworth. Said Louisa is now deceased.

And the said slaves Maria & other children (not named) now divided among the heirs of said Joseph P. Hollingsworth given as:

1. James H. Hollingsworth
2. Elizabeth or Betsy Hollingsworth (also dec'd after her mother)
3. Harriet L. Hollingsworth m. said James Sowers.
