Michael, do you know what the animal is that appears three times on the McKay crest? I figure the one in the center is a stag, but I can't figure out what the other three are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dee Ann gave the same answer I thought of about them. They are bears.

The "McKay Crest" that is being referred to is Lord Reay's Coat of Arms.

Lord Reay is the title given to the Chiefs of Mackay and they are the ones to whom this crest is given to.

All members of Clan Mackay are granted the privilage of displaying the Clan Badge which is seen on the front of this website.

Since usually a Clan isn't limited to people who have actual blood ties to the Chief's line it can apply to anyone who displays allegiance to the Clan Mackay.

I say this because we have yet to prove whether or not our Robert Mackay Sr. is connected by blood to the Chiefs of Mackay.

My DNA test results have yet to show a connection but given time I'm sure there will be a few connections with other families. Interestingly, of all of the Mackay Y-DNA test results there appears to be no close connection with any of the test subjects so far.

If you watched the piece on the History of the Vikings, there should be a little bit of Scandinavian blood in most of us. Certainly they visited the counties where my blood lines began: England, Wales, Scotland, France & Germany.

I am glad you are honest about the results of your DNA test, most people I have been contacted about the DNA test cover up the results. All would have me believe the are 100 per cent connected to all people of the same surname names. I have been contacted by my Bumpass cousins who want to believe the VA Bumpass are descendants of a man of New England.

The Blair Family Web Site has a rather good piece on what the "Y" maker can and can NOT tell you. I would buy African-American, Italians, Greeks etc...might have a different "Y" marker, but to be able to say a particular "Y" means MacKay, Smith, Jones, etc...that I do not buy.
