I have had some success in find information on Taverner/Tavner McKay, born ca. 1799 in Virginia, although I cannot place him and would appreciate any information.
I continue to believe he may have been a son of James McKay (1772-1849) son of James McKay and Mary Cheek by a yet undiscovered first marriage. James m. Patsy Johnston in 1804 when he was about 32, so he had time to have an earlier family. Also, the Taverner name runs in the Cheek family. Mrs. Barbara Cheek, who was 102 when a sketch was written in 1858, refers to Taverner as a brother of Nicholas Cheek, who lived in Dearborn Co., Ind.
Taverner married Sarah Higgins on 13 Jan. 1820 in Switzerland Co. He is shown 1830 in the Jefferson County, Ind., census. The folowing are listed in succession in that census: Mary Vaughn (daughter of James McKay and Mary Cheek), George McKay, David McKay (sons of Robert McKay and Lydia Leith), and Tavner, who lived in close proximity to the descendents of James McKay and Mary Chester all the time he was in either Jefferson or Switzerland Counties.
Tavner was taxed in Milton Twp., Jefferson Co., in 1827 and 1831. He purchased a lot in Greensburg on 23 Sept. 1836 from Joseph Monfort. He and wife Sarah sold the lot on 26 Jan. 1839 to Abner Stewart A number of the sons of Robert McKay and Lydia Leith purchased land in Decatur Co. in the 1830s, including John who m. Isabelle Gaines, David, Robert, and William. Taverner's path seems to follow that of Allen who also owned land in Greensburg. I believe Taverner and Allen may have been full brothers.
I have not found Tavener in the 1850 census. But he is listed in 1860 in the Fourth Ward of Sacramento, Calif. His occupation was given as a watchman. His age was given as 60 and he was born in Virginia. There was a student Charles McKay, age 21, living with him. An S.D. Hunter, born in New York, and a female whose name was given only as E. Hunter, lived with him. In 1870, Tavener is listed in Marysville, Yuba Co., Calif. He was age 71, living in the house of Hugh McKay, age 44. Hugh was born in Indiana.
On June 30, 1820, Allen served on a jury in Switzerland County as did a James McKay, which means he was at least 21 and born before 1799. Allen McKay m. 17 Apr. 1822 in Ohio County, Ky., Malinda Davis.
On 31 Aug. 1830 Allen and wife, Malinda, sold land he had purchased in 1829 in Decatur Co. tract to Richard Braden. Allen was living in McLean Co., Ill, in 1832 when he advertised back in Madison, Ind., seeking the whereabouts of a daughter, age 7, he had left with the family of Isaac Clark. He returned to Indiana by 1834 when he married Sarah Netherland in Switzerland Co. In 1845, he advertised, seeking a son Daniel then about age 16 who had had also left with another family.
Allen is also in close proximity to the descendents of James and Mary Chester McKay. On September 26, 1836, he purchased 36.6 acres from Moses McKay (son of James McKay and Patsy Johnston) and his wife Margaret Lancaster McKay. If my theory is correct, Allen was Moses' half brother.
On 16 April 1841. Allen and his wife, then living in Switzerland Co., sold land to William Vaughn, son of Mary McKay Vaughn. On 16 May 1849, Allen and Sarah McKay, living in Switzerland County, sold a lot in Carrollton, Ky. This is the last record I have found.
Allen apparently died by 1850 as Sarah McKay, age 58, headed a houshold in Craig Twp. In that household were Thurston J. Netherland, 23, Nancy, 21, probably Thurston's wife. Ophelia McKay, 15, probably Allen and Sarah's daughter, and a George Wood 14. Sarah is listed within Within two nad a portion census pages and 16 households, Sarah is listed as are the following: Ephraim
and Merritt McKay (sons or Robert McKay and his wife Mary Cain. Robert was the son James McKay and Mary Cheek); Moses McKay's widow Margaret and her children, Theressa McKay, the widow and second wife of Zachariah McKay, another son of James McKay and Mary Cheek. So, if Allen wasn't part of the James McKay (1772-1849) family, he certainly hung around with them a lot.
In 1860, Sarah lived in a household in Switzerland County
headed by Joseph Netherland. This is the last record I find of her.
