I am looking for the maiden name of Jacob Sowers Sr.'s wife. His wife was named in his will as only Mary. It is thought that he was the emigrate, coming down into present day Winchester, VA in the 1740's. He could have been married in PA or in VA.

We family historians have been looking for evidence of Mary's family name for many years.

Their children we know from his will were:

1. Jacob Sowers Jr. born c1742 m. Isabella Hampton, died 1822 Frederick Co. VA.

2. John Sowers born c1744, m. Jane Knight, died 1813 in Frederick Co. VA.

3. Daniel Sowers born c1748 m. Catherine.........?(believe CRUM), d. 1815 Frederick Co. VA, she is named in her father's will as Katy Sowers. I have a double line from his couple.

4. Elizabeth Sowers b. c1750 m. John Campbell he died in 1809. This is the line that I have new information.

5. Susanna Sowres b. c1752 m. .......Williams.

Elizabeth Sowers & John Campbell's son John Campbell dated his will 28 Mar 1819, probated 6 Apr 1819 Frederick Co. VA. His wife is not mentioned in his will, but we know he married Dolitha CATLETT on 10 Mar 1803 in Frederick Co. VA. Her mother was named Nancy.

Second person mentioned in his will--stated as being HIS COUSIN--Lucy Stephenson (wife of Wm.). Their marriage listed in Frederick Co. VA marriage bond as Wm. Stephenson & Lucy CATLETT on 26 Feb 1816. From other records I know that her parents were Harry/Henry Catlett & Miram CALMES.

So if John & Lucy were cousins, then I am looking for the maiden name of Mary (wife of Jacob Sowers) as being either Catlett or Calmes.

The Calmes found father was Marquis Calmes came from France.

If you can limitate one of these surnames, I would appreciate a posting. Both surnames can be found in early Frederick Co. VA as was said Jacob Sowers Sr.

As a side note, Daniel & Catherine Sowers named one of their children as Fielding L. Sowers. He was born 20 Nov 1788. There was a member of the Calmes family named Fielding Gibbs Calmes born 30 Jan 1766.

After viewing the work by Carol Hauk "John Catlett of England & VA" containing 255 of text. I do not see a place in this family for our Mary wife of Jacob Sowers.

I have found out that the wife of John Campbell--Dolitha/Dorothy Catlett was the first cousin of Lucy Stephenson.

The Calmes researchers that have contacted me, give no hope Mary was a member of the Calmes nor Neavill families.

The last person I need to find out more about would be Mary Ann Floyd born 1725 VA & died 1816 wife of Robert Catlett. Need to find out if another family member of her Floyd family--Mary who married a Jacob Sowers.
