"On March 5, 2003, 144 acres of the Phillips Farm of Waterford, Virginia--all of which is inside the boundaries of the Waterford National Historic Landmark--were sold to Historic Fields, LLC for $2,208,000. The Phillips Farm forms Waterford’s most prominent and cherished viewshed—an unspoiled agricultural setting on the north and west framed against the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. The Waterford Foundation, Inc. had been in continuous active negotiations with the previous owners since late 2001, and had offered an amount higher than the purchase price. Immediately after the sale, the Foundation initiated negotiations with Historic Fields, LLC. In its pursuit of the property, the Waterford Foundation has begun fundraising efforts. We will need all the help we can get from friends old and new to raise approximately $3 million to preserve this farm."
