I just purchased the newest edition of the "Annals of Clarke County, Virginia" by Lorraine F. Myers and Stuart E. Brown, Jr.
It contains some bits and pieces of information dealing with our familes in that area.
A few of note I have are:
Jan. 2, 1873:
"Public sale of land of Fielding L. Sowers, adjoining Wm. E. Harris".
Jan. 9, 1873:
"The estate of Fielding L. Sowers was bought by Miss Sarah E. Sowers, and part by Mrs. Hefflebower."
Sept. 21, 2003:
"Public sale of tracts of land owned by late Fielding L. Sowers a portion assigned to Sally E. Sowers McKay, adjoining Wm. B. Harris heirs, & a plot assigned to Caroline E. Sowers.
Also, it should be noted that I found one mistake in the book. It refers to some old photographs and other things, which (the photographs) I have on this website.
These incorrectly mention Beverly Brownley McKay as Beverly Burch McKay. Burch wasn't even born when most of the pictures were taken.

I bought my copy at The Winchester Book Gallery which is located on the SW corner of Loudoun and Piccadilly right at the beginning of the Old Town Mall. Cost is around $45.00 or so but I don't remember exactly.
Stuart Brown has put out other Clarke County works which have some info. on our family. I don't know about the availability of them but they would likely be sold there as well.
Here's a link to their website:

I have discovered an error in the newspaper article that is being displayed on this link:

The picture of Uncle Bev standing outside of the store that he and Cousin Glenn Burch (his brother-in-law) operated is said to have been taken around 1900. This couldn't be true mainly because Bev was a mere lad of 13 at that time.
I am assuming that it had to be taken in 1921 at the latest but it could have been earlier. I doubt it couldn't have been any earlier than 1915 which was the year that Bev married Frances.
Another interesting piece of history about this store is that according to the Annals of Clarke County Virginia (Volume IV) that James Howard Locke bought it in 1921 and in the year 1935 there was a robbery and the building was burned and the safe was taken (but never recovered). I don't know if Locke was the owner at that time or it had been sold to the Cunningham brothers.
If you see the store today you will notice that the roof doesn't resemble the one depicted in the picture. I believe that after the fire the roof was replaced but not in the original style it once was.
Also, the porch doesn't drop off anymore. The pavement has been raised up almost to the edge of the porch making a sloping decline. It looks as though that the entire road going through Millwood has changed some. I believe that the reason for this can be summed up in Aunt Frances's statement in that story about pulling cars out of the creek. Road was probably improved upon to eliminate that problem.
Currently the building is called "The Locke Store" and sells many exotic dishes and various foods on it's shelves. They have a website in the works which I will have a look at once it is completed.

The Clarke County Historical Association has volume #4. Do not know the price. Location is main street, next to old library. I am looking for volumes #1 through #3, at a REASONABLE price.
