A Pirtle researcher e-mail me the following message about the death of Lile Pirtle:

"Mar. 9 1905, Thurs. Sullivan Democrat

Killed While Hunting: Lile Pirtle Accidentally Shot By Brother While Hunting Ducks:

Wednesday Gill township Farmer Dies From Gun Shot--Lile Pirtle, a Gill township farmer was killed Wednesday afternoon by the accidential discharge of a gun in the hands of his brother, Dan, while the two were duck hunting on John Noble's farm in the south part of Gill township.

Lile Pirtle was walking behind his brother, Dan, in passing under a limb, caught the trigger of his gun upon a limb, and the discharge from the gun was emptied into his brother's breast, entering about two inches below the left nipple and making a hole as big as a silver dollar, the load lodging in his back. He was only about two feet from the gun and the shot was not scattered at all. He lived for about two hours. He remained conscious for a time and realized that he must die. He knew it was an accident and said he did not blame his brother. He begged to be allowed to throw himself into the water to hasten the end and stop his suffering. When the accident occurred Dan sounded the alarm and several men came, but could do little for the injured man. The place was surrounded by water so a boat had to be brought to take the remains to the residence of the deceased, three miles south of New Lebanon, where Coroner M.F. Maxwell and his clerk, Abe Curtis, held an inquest last night and will return a verdict in accordance with the facts stated above.

Lile Pirtle was about 37 years of age and leaves a wife and four children."
