On page 52 of my MacKay Book, list the marriage of George McKay with Mary Ferguson.

Her parents Samuel Ferguson & Sarah MILDRED Garrison, filed a land deed in Book 18, page 737 dated 18 Aug 1813. Said Samuel Ferguson conveyed over in trust to Ephraim Garrison of Frederick Co. VA, certain named properties for the benefit of his wife named as Mildred Ferguson and their children (not named).

As I go back in time in the land deeds perhaps I will find a link with your Ferguson and this group of Ferguson.
This couple is part of the Moses McKay/Abigail Shinn branch of our family and lived in Ohio. I looked through Cousin Kate Luby's book on "Twelve Tribes of Moses" (her name for Moses & his offspring) to study these branches a little. I saw where these Fergusons had Fauquier Co. origins so I suspect part of the same family as mine. It would be interesting too to make such a connection and determine what the relationship their descendants are to myself on both McKay and Ferguson sides. I already know their progeny down to my generation are my eighth cousins. Not sure if there is a closer kinship through the Fergusons or not.

Interesting how everything connects. I figured also there had to be some interactions between my Fergusons and our Sowers family due to the proximity of where both families lived. I already am familar with the Strother (Carr)/Sowers (Kerfoot) marriage. Didn't really know about the other one you pointed out.

If you have not checked out the book of Frederick Co. VA Wills etc...1795-1816 by Kangas & Payne, there are entries for a John D. Ferguson, just as a witness.

But there was another John Ferguson who died in that location by 4 Feb 1811 his inventory & appraisal of his estate is listed. His administers were Martha Ferguson & Collin Carroll. Appraisers: James Bruce, Wm. Jolliffe & John Campbell.

If you are lucky this estate division might have been in Book 10. Their book just goes to Book 9.

In any case I will know more about this location after I abtract & compile Frederick Co. VA Wills and Land Deeds for myself.

It would appear that there were two John D. Ferguson living at the same time in Fauquier Co. VA and nearby counies.

The one John D. Ferguson (listed in some of the records as "of Josias") born 1805 VA died 3 May 1881 buried Delaplane, Fauquier Co. VA. Married to Edna A. Kercheval. I just have his parents as Josias & Elizabeth Ferguson. Just have his siblings listed as: Josias Jr. & Eliza (married to James Ferguson, have the names of three of their children)

The John D. Ferguson (of Dekin/Dikin) you are interested in I just have him born c1800 married to a Nancy. In my land deed book collection 1823-1839, list him as "of Frederick Co. VA". The earlier grouping of deed I am now working on 1809-1824, he rented town lot in Paris, VA from Peter Glascock. So you might have to look at the records in three different locations: Fauquier, Frederick/Clarke.

If I find out more about your John D. Ferguson will post on your site.
There are in fact three different John D. Ferguson's. John Diskin Ferguson, Sr. (born abt. 1765 in Prince William Co.) married Nancy Marshall, their son John D. born about 1812 married Emily Ann Green in 1834 and Rebecca O. Ferguson in 1845. Rebecca O. is the daughter of Josiah Ferguson.

There is also John D. Ferguson, son of Josiah Ferguson (brother of John Diskin) born about 1805 who married Edna A. Kercheval in 1834.

Josiah Ferguson, Sr. and his sons John D. and Josiah lived in Fauquier Co. John Diskin Ferguson and his sons John D., Josiah, James, Washington and William lived in Frederick/Clarke Co. James married Eliza Ferguson (daughter of Josiah)in 1832.

Children of John Diskin Ferguson:
Lucinda married Michael Dearmont (my direct line)
Washington
Sarah married George Strother
Elizabeth married Enoch Strother
John D. married 1)Emily Green 2) Rebecca O. Ferguson
James married 1) Eliza Ferguson 2) Helen M. Edmonds
Mary Ann married Richard Nelson Green
Josiah married Susan Catherine Peyton
William M. married Susan Elizabeth Strother

Known children of Josiah Ferguson:
Harriet
John D. married Edna A. Kercheval
Eliza married James Ferguson
Josiah married Frances Kercheval
Molly A.O.
Rebecca O. married John D. Ferguson, Jr.

Like I have already posted on Michael's I do not have an original document which clearly states what the "D" stands for in John D. Ferguson's name.

I also do not have evidence as to the maiden name of his wife being a Marshall.

What original records do you have for these two items?

I have been in contact with a cousin on the Ferguson family. Actually, one of the first confirmed cousins through the internet on this part of my family.

Anyhow, by viewing the information she has it is becoming apparent that I had the wrong parents listed for my great-great-grandfather, William Marshall Ferguson.

This has caused me to consider re-doing the Ferguson family page I have up on the website at: http://www.geocities.com/mckyrbnsn/stee ... guson.html

I believe eventually this will develop into a subsection itself when I add some pictures of the Ferguson side of the family and possibly wills and/or other documents.

What this information might mean is we might be connected to the Marshall family and Green family of the same region. These three families (Ferguson, Marshall & Green) and also the Strother family intermarried quite frequently making for numerous cousin marriages very similar to the frequent intermarriage between the Sowers and Kerfoot families and later between the Sowers & Kerfoot descendants with those of Robert Mackay Sr. who lived in the Valley.

My Ferguson ancestors and the other three related families (Strother, Marshall & Green) occupied an area straddling the border of Clarke & Fauquier Counties, mostly around the village of Paris located just off of U.S. 50 between Winchester & Washington, DC. An old cemetery is in the area and I am planning to pay a visit there sometime soon to see what I can find there.

This actually marks a turning point in gathering information on my Ferguson side as I'm sure it will open doors to more discoveries.

I often caution people about taking for granted what they read either on-line or in other people's records and come to find out that I have made similar mistakes in my records, especially with this side of the family. I decided to take a second look at the data that was presented to me earlier and found where it wasn't actually proven that William Marshall Ferguson was the son of Josiah as the earlier information hypothesized. Apparently, it's more likely he's the son of John Diskin Ferguson.

I'll be working more on the Ferguson family as time passes and hope to be able to make contact with more long lost cousins on this side.
Found in John K. Gott's book Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds 1759-1778 on page 9 list a couple John & Martha Ferguson date of deed 24 Sep 1760. This couple could/should be a generation older than John D. Ferguson Sr. & his brother Josias/Josiah Ferguson Sr.

There was also a Nehemiah Ferguson as a witness about the same time period.

As I go back in time through these Fauquier Co. VA land deed I will post here additional information about these various Fergusons.

I am working on land deeds 1809-1824 Books 18-27 does have items for Ferguson, Strother, Marshall & Green. It will not be ready for sale until Dec 2002 or Jan 2003. The other books I have for sale for Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds:

Land Deeds 28-39 1823-1839 for $30.00
Land Deeds 39-45 1839-1846 for $20.00
Land Deeds 46-52 1846-1852 for $24.00
Land Deeds 53-59 1853-1866 for $30.00

postage & handling $3.50 first book & $2.50 each additional book, check or money order to me:

Dee Ann Buck
10814 Paynes Church Drive
Fairfax, VA 22032

I am finding a great deal of biographical information in these deed, which either John K. Gott didn't find the same in the earliest Book 1-6, or he didn't include this kind of information in his book.

The middle initial "D", came from a copy of the Fairfax to Ferguson Lease dated April 6, 1793. Signature at bottom of page 3 is "John Diskin Ferguson". John Diskin Ferguson also signed as a witness on the Fairfax to Dearmont Lease dated April 6, 1793.

The marriage of John Ferguson and Miss Marshall was obtained from the book DeArmond Families of America, written by Roscoe Carlisle d'Armand. His source is Frederick Co., VA marriage records. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of that original record. It was only recently that I made contact with a Marshall kin who stated that his family records indicated Nancy Marshall (daughter of Rush Marshall & Joanna Pede) married John Ferguson. I have asked for a copy of his documentation.

It will be first of the year when I get back to 1793 in Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds. Like I have said in the past all the original records dealing with John D. Ferguson, just has "D" and (of Deckin). Stange he name was recorded in this matter.

As to his wife's maiden name being Marshall. Found in Fauquier Co. VA Marriage Records by John K. Gott

"Ferguson, John & Ann Piper, Aug 28,1789, bondman & daughter of Winifred."

So I am wondering if John D. Ferguson who had a wife named Nancy, could not be the above Ann.

All the information I am posting on Michael's site is from original records.

Michael,
I didn't closely check who wrote the message I'm responding to.

I have a hand drawn.. very small .. map of Paris, VA which shows a Ferguson lot. Era.. 1860. No doubt you can find it in the Handley Library. If not, I can send you a copy; or.. I believe the Fauquier Co. Historical Society has it on their shelves.

Source: Book by Nancy C Baird. She edited the Journals of an ancestor. Amanda Virginia Edmonds.

Title: "JOURNAL OF AMANDA VIRGINIA EDMONDS, Lass of the Confederacy" by Nancy C Baird. (From memory) Pg. xix

There may be other references in the book which reflect Ferguson information. (I glanced so quickly when waiting for an appointment.)

Will check for more at a later day.

I have posted the census data of John D. Ferguson, Sr. of Frederick Co. Based on this information, he is at least 10-20 years older than his spouse and it is consistent from 1810-1840.

If John D.'s spouse is 16-26 in 1810, and I would hypothosize that her age is closer to 26 with four children under 10, then this is probably not Ann Piper who he married August 28, 1789.

Either there is another John D. Ferguson who married Ann Piper in 1789, or he was married to Ann Piper before he married Nancy Marshall.

Of course, this is only speculation and is worthy of more research and valid documentation, but it certainly gives us something to think about.

1810 Frederick Co., Unknown Twp census - 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26.

1820 Frederick Co., Stephens Twp. - 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 45 and over, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45.

1830 Frederick Co., Eastern District - 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50.

1840 Clarke Co. - 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 70-80, 1 female under 5, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 50-60.

John D. Ferguson dies in 1844 and Nancy Ferguson is not listed on the Clarke Co. census.

In Baird cemetery book interesting grouping of Ferguson buried together. I think if you looked at Fauquier Co. VA census 1870,1880,1900 & 1910 you might be able to place them in your family tree.

Mary Rosalie Ferguson 1881-1915
Wade Hampton Ferguson 1867-1925
Lila M. Ferguson 1862-1937
Josephine Ferguson 1871-1949
Betty Ferguson 1872-1956
Luella Ferguson 1874-1954
W.P. Ferguson 1879-1941
A.H. Ferguson 1875-1949
Anna M. Ferguson 1879-1959

As I get further back in time abtracting and compiling Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds, perhaps the parentage of your John D. Ferguson will "pop up".

Since I do not know what you know, if I run into information in the deeds for Ferguson & Strother in Fauquier Co. VA I will just post the items here on these queries.
Most of the individuals listed are the children of Abner Ferguson and Mary E. (Marshall) Ferguson. Abner was the son of James Ferguson (son of John D.) & Eliza Ferguson (daughter of Josiah) and Mary E. Marshall was the daughter of John Marshall and Elizabeth Green.

Abner Ferguson and wife Mary E. are listed on the 1880 Clarke Co., Greenway Twp., census with children, Eliza M., Alfred P., Wade H., John M., Josephine, Elizabeth, Lucy, Abner, James, Roberta, W----- P.,

Can't place Mary Rosaline Ferguson 1881-1915 and Anna M. Ferguson 1879-1959.
