I have been in contact with a cousin on the Ferguson family. Actually, one of the first confirmed cousins through the internet on this part of my family.

Anyhow, by viewing the information she has it is becoming apparent that I had the wrong parents listed for my great-great-grandfather, William Marshall Ferguson.

This has caused me to consider re-doing the Ferguson family page I have up on the website at: http://www.geocities.com/mckyrbnsn/stee ... guson.html

I believe eventually this will develop into a subsection itself when I add some pictures of the Ferguson side of the family and possibly wills and/or other documents.

What this information might mean is we might be connected to the Marshall family and Green family of the same region. These three families (Ferguson, Marshall & Green) and also the Strother family intermarried quite frequently making for numerous cousin marriages very similar to the frequent intermarriage between the Sowers and Kerfoot families and later between the Sowers & Kerfoot descendants with those of Robert Mackay Sr. who lived in the Valley.

My Ferguson ancestors and the other three related families (Strother, Marshall & Green) occupied an area straddling the border of Clarke & Fauquier Counties, mostly around the village of Paris located just off of U.S. 50 between Winchester & Washington, DC. An old cemetery is in the area and I am planning to pay a visit there sometime soon to see what I can find there.

This actually marks a turning point in gathering information on my Ferguson side as I'm sure it will open doors to more discoveries.

I often caution people about taking for granted what they read either on-line or in other people's records and come to find out that I have made similar mistakes in my records, especially with this side of the family. I decided to take a second look at the data that was presented to me earlier and found where it wasn't actually proven that William Marshall Ferguson was the son of Josiah as the earlier information hypothesized. Apparently, it's more likely he's the son of John Diskin Ferguson.

I'll be working more on the Ferguson family as time passes and hope to be able to make contact with more long lost cousins on this side.

I am sorry if what I send you years ago (in 1980's) was incorrect about the ancestry of your Wm. M. Ferguson. The old chart I have in your folder does show the parentage of your Wm. M. Ferguson in pencil as Josiah then corrected to John D. & Nancy Ferguson.

According to L.D.S./I.G.I. where was another Wm. Ferguson born about the same time in Pr.Wm.Co.VA to a Josiah/Josias. Perhaps this is now the mistake was made.

I believe the Handley Library in Winchester has all my Fauquier Co. VA Books. You might want to abtract all the entries for Strother, Ferguson, Green & Marshall, lots of entries. I sell these book to the public.

Fauquier Co. VA Births 1853-1896 for $27.00
Fauquier Co. VA Deaths 1853-1896 for $20.00
Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds 1823-1839 for $30.00
Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds 1839-1846 for $20.00
Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds 1846-1852 for $24.00
Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds 1853-1866 for $30.00
Fauquier Co. VA Marriages 1854-1880 for $25.00
Fauquier Co. VA Marriages 1881-1896 for $20.00
Fauquier Co. VA Wills 1759-1799 for $10.00
Fauquier Co. VA Wills 1800-1865 for $35.00

postage & handling $3.50 first book & $2.50 for each additional book. Check or money order to me:

I am working to abtract & compile all the land deed back to the first book for Fauquier Co. VA. I think this is the only way to get all the information I will need to compile a book dealing with the families of my grandfather Walter Eugene Shipp.

Your ancestors' marriage is listed in my first Fauquier Co. VA Marriage book as: "Ferguson, William, 40 years of age, single, born & living in Clarke Co. VA, Farmer, parents John D. & Nancy Ferguson, married on 24 Nov 1868 to Susan Elizabeth Strother, 35 years of age, single, born & living in Fauquier Co. VA, parents John & Julia A. Strother, married by F.C. Tebbs, Lewis Strother made an oath as to the age of the bride: Page 77 of the registry."

You can write & call the Warrenton Court House for a copy of the original record. I think the cost of $3.25 for the record with a stamped return envelop.

40 Culpeper St.
Warrenton, VA 20186
1-540-347-8748

The marriage of the above couple John D. & Nancy Ferguson is not listed in John K. Gott's book Fauquier Co. VA Marriages 1759-1854. So either they were married in another location (hope not Pr.Wm.Co.VA) or the early marriage bond was destroyed. This is the case with at least four of my early Fauquier Co. VA couples I am trying to study. His book is full of other Green, Ferguson, Marshall & Strother marriages.

You will want to exchange information with Shirley Starks about the Marshall family. Her family came down from MD into Frederick Co. VA and did not belong to the same ones living in Fauquier Co. VA.

I am not sure if all the Green families living in Fauquier Co. VA were the descendants of Wm. Duff (partner of our Robert MacKay) and his nephew Robert Green or not.

My books in the Handley library will give you lots of pieces of information, how and if you can put it all together I can't say.

Two books you want to get a hold of are the cemetery books by Nancy C. Baird. I believe Hertiage Books Inc. sell a later volume of her for $55 to $60.

The one I have in my personal library by her is the one copyright year of 1970.

I do not want to take the time looking at all the Marshall, Green, Strother & Ferguson entries listed if you have already seen this book.

She does have a listing for the Leeds Episcopal Church in Hume, VA. I believe this is the location of the grave of one of the daughter of my late great-uncle Hubert F. McKay. There are other Striblings listed.

In any case, where are some fine original records available to the public dealing with Fauquier Co. VA.

Check out the posting for John D. Ferguson on Rootweb/Fauquier Co. VA Web Site posted by Julie Beeler Schmers, e-mail address posted as:

I would not go collecting a lot of information about the Marshall & Green families of Fauquier Co. VA, unless you are sure your Wm. Marshall Ferguson did have these surnames in his family tree.

It would appear that there were two John D. Ferguson living at the same time in Fauquier Co. VA and nearby counies.

The one John D. Ferguson (listed in some of the records as "of Josias") born 1805 VA died 3 May 1881 buried Delaplane, Fauquier Co. VA. Married to Edna A. Kercheval. I just have his parents as Josias & Elizabeth Ferguson. Just have his siblings listed as: Josias Jr. & Eliza (married to James Ferguson, have the names of three of their children)

The John D. Ferguson (of Dekin/Dikin) you are interested in I just have him born c1800 married to a Nancy. In my land deed book collection 1823-1839, list him as "of Frederick Co. VA". The earlier grouping of deed I am now working on 1809-1824, he rented town lot in Paris, VA from Peter Glascock. So you might have to look at the records in three different locations: Fauquier, Frederick/Clarke.

If I find out more about your John D. Ferguson will post on your site.

Thanks for the new info. It does confirm that my William is indeed John D. & Nancy Ferguson's son.

The Marshall connection has yet to actually be proven. It's in the possibility stage at this point I believe. It is merely that my Fergusons had intermarried frequently with the other three mentioned families of Strother, Marshall & Green. Strother is the only one I can truly say I descend from.

The direction of my Ferguson page will likely be in the form of a subsection with part of it devoted to the Ferguson side pictures I have.

I also will try to visit the old cemetery that was mentioned and see what I can find there.

SORRY, John D. Ferguson died 4 Jan 1860 near or about Delaplane, Fauquier Co. VA. His will is recorded in Fauquier Co. VA Wills.

It was his wife who died 3 May 1881 same location, both are buried in her family burial ground, called the
Kercheval Ferguson Cemetery. Located just south of Pleasant Vale Baptist Church on Rt. 724.

Both their grave marker recorded in Nancy C. Baird's cemetery book page 51.

The only other graves listed for James H. Kercheval & Sarah A. Kercheval.

There was a third John D. Ferguson. The only information I have about him. Born 1822 in Fauquier Co. VA, from census report, married 10 Dec 1845 in Fauquier Co. VA to Rebecca O. Ferguson born 1823 from census report only. I have the names of two of their children (not sure if they had more): Eliza M. Ferguson born 1849 VA and Alban J. Ferguson married Laura Webb Kerfoot (also had Sowers ancestry).

In Baird cemetery book interesting grouping of Ferguson buried together. I think if you looked at Fauquier Co. VA census 1870,1880,1900 & 1910 you might be able to place them in your family tree.

Mary Rosalie Ferguson 1881-1915
Wade Hampton Ferguson 1867-1925
Lila M. Ferguson 1862-1937
Josephine Ferguson 1871-1949
Betty Ferguson 1872-1956
Luella Ferguson 1874-1954
W.P. Ferguson 1879-1941
A.H. Ferguson 1875-1949
Anna M. Ferguson 1879-1959

As I get further back in time abtracting and compiling Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds, perhaps the parentage of your John D. Ferguson will "pop up".

Since I do not know what you know, if I run into information in the deeds for Ferguson & Strother in Fauquier Co. VA I will just post the items here on these queries.

Listed in Vogt's book Marriages of Frederick Co. VA 1738-1850

John D. Ferguson married 20 Dec 1834 to Emily A. Green, bond posted by James Green.

None of the original records I have run across say what the "D" stands for in the names of these four John D. Ferguson.

On page 52 of my MacKay Book, list the marriage of George McKay with Mary Ferguson.

Her parents Samuel Ferguson & Sarah MILDRED Garrison, filed a land deed in Book 18, page 737 dated 18 Aug 1813. Said Samuel Ferguson conveyed over in trust to Ephraim Garrison of Frederick Co. VA, certain named properties for the benefit of his wife named as Mildred Ferguson and their children (not named).

As I go back in time in the land deeds perhaps I will find a link with your Ferguson and this group of Ferguson.
