While finishing up my latest Fauquier Co. VA Land Deed Book, in a deed filed by Alice Corban Hawkins probated 18 Sep 1829.
She mentioned giving to her family members living in Fauquier Co. VA, property which once belonged to her father Dr. Adam Thompson located in the "town of Leith in that part of Great Britain called Scotland".
Since I found a some evidence (certainly not enough) between John Leith & John MacKay of early Freehold, NJ
would like to see if there are records of MacKay in this same village of Leith in Scotland.
I need a better map of Scotland to figure out which area of Scotland this village Leith is located.

Found entry for Leith in book at the library. Stated Leith lying 1 1/2 mile N.E. of Edinburgh. And includes the fishing harbor of Newhaven.
This town is not all that far from the Scottish home of the Hampton family found in Elphingstoun, EAst Lothian, Scotland.

I don't have the records with me so I'm doing this off the top of my head but I do recall that Robert Sr.'s daughter Lydia married a man by the name of Leith.

Robert MacKay Sr. two sons: James Sr. & Moses Sr. McKay children had marriages with the Leeth/Leith family.
James Sr. 's daughter Lydia McKay married James Leith and his youngest daughter Nancy McKay married Ebenezer Leith. Both listed on page 162 of my McKay book.
Moses Sr. youngest child Rachel McKay married George Leith, listed on page 259 of my McKay book.
The relationship between the Leith (various spellings) and our MacKay, that I want to find out more about is their dealing with each other in Freehold, Monmouth Co. NJ. The question is did they arrive from Scotland together and from the same location.
The known location that John Hampton of Scotland/Freehold, NJ is not that far from Leith, Scotland. All in the general Edinburgh area, not the "Highlands of Scotland".

His book list Scots by surname transported from various parts of Scotland to the colonies.
There are more than few from Leith, Scotland in the boat "Henry And Francis" directly to Freehold, NJ.

What are the names of the passengers? Are there any surnames that appear frequently? I wonder how many families immigrated together to Freehold, NJ?

In his book "The Original Scots Colonists of Early American 1607-1707 I went through and marked the ones imported to Freehold, NJ. I do not think you want me to take up space listing all of them. Just these few I think interesting:
Brown, George: a Covenanter, transported from Leith to East New Jersey on the "Henry and Francis of Newcastle", master Richard Hutton, 5.9.1685 arrived. But I could never find a connection with him and the family of our Ann Brown.
Dobie, James emigrated from Leith to East New Jersey 1684. I have found this surname in Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds.
Ferguson, Janet, a covenanter imprisoned various jails, banished to colonies from Leith Tolbooth in boat "Henry and Frances of Newcastle" to East New Jersey. There are 17 other Ferguson listed in his book.
Grubb, Thomas & his wife Jean indentured servants imported into East New Jersey by Thomas Fullerton 10.1684.
He has my Hampton listed, but I will not go into them.
Hoge, William, born 1660 Musselburgh, emigrated 1680 settled in Perth Amboy, NJ, later settled in Kernstown, VA. Two other Hogg: John & Grissell imported to NJ from Scotland.
Hume surname about six interesting names, removed to Scotland to parts of NJ.
Leith, Thomas arrived SC in 27.11.1682. So my question would be how did that John Leith arrived to Freehold, NJ, did he arrive with John MacKay of early Freehold, NJ.
The MacKay or McCoy listed are not helpful to figuring out the parentage of our Robert MacKay. Listed however,
MacKay, John in Northumberland Co. VA 1651. This is the man I think purchased land from Lord Fairfax and his descendants later lived in Shenandoah Co. VA.
Reid, Andrew, son of John from Leith to East New Jersey on the "Exchange of Stockton" settled in East NJ died 1769. Three other Reid removed from the same part of Scotland to East NJ. The surname Reid appears in Fauquier Co. VA.
Ross, Alexander, born 1682 shipped to Philadelphia by Maurice Trent, indentured for 10 years in Chester Co. PA 3.10.1693. I believe his could be the same man who removed to VA. Book has about 20 other Ross listed.
Tait, Magnus, imported from Scotland to PA by the Trents, indentured for 5 or 6 years in Chester Co. PA 14.7.1697.
Tait, Patrick an indentured servant imported into East NJ by Lord Neill Campbell 12.1685. Tait family has a connection with our MacKay in VA.
In any case-- I will continue to try and place that clerk of early Freehold, NJ--John MacKay. The fact he could read and write I think is important. Our Robert MacKay and most of his children could at least sign their names.
